Hi terrieburt504

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi its Terrie again here is the the files you requested. Not sure what any of them mean but maybe you can figure out what is wrong with this thing. I would like to try and fix the problem before i resort to just wiping the hard drive and starting over again.

Let's try this:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Now re-scan with spybot and tell me if it still comes back.

2008-11-23, 17:45
hi here again. I tried what you asked about disabling Tea Timer and it is still coming up.

terrieburt504
2008-11-23, 17:47
hey just wondering if i should try and do the fix problem step. then try reboot again and redo another scan and see if it comes back

Shaba
2008-11-23, 17:49
Likely Teatimer restores it anyway.

1. Uninstall spybot
2. Reboot.
3. Reinstall spybot (don't enable Teatimer)
4. Run a scan with spybot. If it found something, fix it and run another scan with it.

Let me know if it still finds something.

terrieburt504
2008-11-23, 18:37
k did all that said that the problem was there. I fixed the problems and ran another scan and said no immediate threats were found. Do you think that it is gone now?

Shaba
2008-11-23, 18:41
Yes, that is possible.

However, let's run one scan to be sure.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Shaba

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Thanks for information.

Please run this instead:

Please go to Eset website (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click on the Start button next to it.
When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
Uncheck (untick) Remove found threats box.
Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
Click on Scan.
It will start scanning. Please be patient.
Once the scan is done, you will find a log in C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt. Please post this log in your next reply.

Then I think that router needs to be resetted.

Do you have router manual handy?

terrieburt504
2008-11-24, 19:57
i think you are probably right, im at work in a remote camp in the north so i cant reset router. only authorized personnel can. So maybe over all do you think i got rid of my problem?

Shaba
2008-11-24, 20:01
Yes, from original problem.

Please try this instead:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

MBAM report indicates that router has been "hacked" to pick up IP address from Ukraine.

So router needs to be resetted next, much can't be done before that.

Please re-run MBAM afterwards and post back also a fresh HijackThis log.

OK, MBAM looks like to have quarantined them.

Still same symptoms?

terrieburt504
2008-11-25, 19:59

Shaba

Is router resetted?

terrieburt504
2008-11-25, 20:02
the guy said he wasnt sure if he did or not, but im guessing not

Shaba
2008-11-25, 20:05
Yes looks like that it is not resetted. It is essential that router is resetted or infection will come back again and again. First that guy needs to reset router and also likely main router of camp if there is any. After that, re-run mbam and save log. Re-run mbam another time, post both mbam logs and report back if still same symptoms.

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 18:18
well going home today, just curious if when i get home will i have a better chance of getting rid of my problem. Also cant google page again. I had it the other day and all of a sudden its not opening. when i get home im afraid that this problem might affect my network at my house. Do you think that will happen?

Shaba
2008-11-26, 18:23
If you don't use same connection/router at home, it shouldn't.

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 19:52
so will i be able to get rid of my problem though

Shaba
2008-11-26, 19:53
Yes. Run mbam when you are at home and post back its log and a fresh HijackThis log.

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 19:55
k thank you i will try that

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 19:56
also curious when i reinstalled spybot is it a good idea to leave the tea timer off or on

Shaba
2008-11-26, 20:00
TeaTimer is a good additional protective program so I'd leave it on :)

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 20:01
k so how do i put that back on cause i excluded that from the install

Shaba
2008-11-26, 20:03
Do this:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Check "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

If not available, you will need to uninstall and re-install spybot with TeaTimer.

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 20:17
k thank you i turned it back on. i would like to thank you for all the help you have given me. I told my Dad about this problem I've been having and he told me i should wipe my hard drive and start over. Oh yah he is a computer tech himself. When i got this laptop it never came with the OS disks. Im supposed to create them myself with Recovery Disc Creator. Im thinking though that now that i have this problem that it wont matter if i create them, cause maybe that will be infected too. Am i right or wrong?

Shaba
2008-11-26, 20:22
They won't get infected if there a special partition in hard drive from which it creates Recovery Disk and if that one isn't infected.

terrieburt504
2008-11-26, 20:24
yah my hard drive is partitioned. One part is for the OS and the rest is for storage i think

Shaba
2008-11-26, 20:26
So then recovery disk should be clean anyway.

After i ran MBAM and delete i ran it 2 more times and i believe that my problem is now gone. If you are not sure that its gone for sure let me know and i can send you reports again. would like to thank you for all your help. Just curious though, the reason i couldnt get it to go away was it because i was on an infected network and it would just come back again and again? Now that im at home the problem just went away too easy, is that possible?

Shaba
2008-11-28, 11:27
"Just curious though, the reason i couldnt get it to go away was it because i was on an infected network and it would just come back again and again?"

Exactly :) Router was infected there.

Have you previously uninstalled Norton?

terrieburt504
2008-11-28, 12:34
Yah i did cause it seemed like it wasnt picking up any infections and it was just a trial version so i put a trial version of Windows OneCare till i got home. Not sure which one is better, Windows OneCare or Norton 360

Shaba
2008-11-28, 12:57
Both of them are fine; no antivirus can find all threats.

There are some norton remnants in that case. Which one of those you want to use?

If OneCare, we will remove norton remnants next :)

terrieburt504
2008-11-28, 13:03
Well I think i just have remnants cause i didnt remove everything from add and remove programs on norton like Liveupdate 3.2 and Liveupdate Notice which are both part of Norton. Im guessing i should get rid of them also? I do have a full version of Norton 360 here at my house, should I just put that back on?

Shaba
2008-11-28, 13:09
In that case, please remove Liveupdate 3.2 and Liveupdate Notice along with OneCare and install Norton 360 :)

terrieburt504
2008-11-28, 13:11
Just curious should i restart my computer after i uninstall all those before i put Norton 360 back on?

Shaba
2008-11-28, 13:13
Yes rebooting would be good to perform as well as enabling windows firewall.

You can disable windows firewall after installation.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log afterwards, please.

terrieburt504
2008-11-28, 13:20
How do i know if my firewall is on and why would i want to disable it after?

Shaba
2008-11-28, 13:25
You can see status from Security, see here (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/bfe523a9-7eec-4d3f-add1-2f68b9cfa1c01033.mspx).

Norton 360 has a firewall and you should use only one firewall at the same time.

terrieburt504
2008-11-28, 13:31
oh ok i understand use the firewall that comes with Norton. K Ill do all that and send you back a HJT report also. Really late here though, 4:30 in the morning. Gonna do all this when i get up. Thanks

Shaba
2008-11-28, 13:33
No hurry, take your time :)

terrieburt504
2008-11-29, 07:08
k having major problems here. Trying to install Norton 360. I put the cd key when it asked me too and went thru the installation process. After i was finished i couldnt open the main window for norton. I figured i installed it wrong so i uninstalled it and restarted. ok now i tried to install it again and it is not asking me for a cd key and it still wont open the norton window. What went wrong?

terrieburt504

Yes looks like installation wasn't successful.

Did you run installer as an administrator?

terrieburt504
2008-11-30, 06:04
no i didnt run as admin, now im having other issues. It asked me to do a system recovery. I did that and now i cant even go online to get help from you. Im writing from my home computer. Im guessing i have no choice now but to wipe it and start new?

I guess i should mention if i didnt already that i didnt create my OS disks like i was supposed to when i first got my laptop. Am i completely screwed here? Im really considering just putting XP on it instead but im kinda liking Vista a little better. What do you think i should do?

Please try this (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/) next and let me know if it helped.

Then I think that it might be best to re-direct you some windows forum.

Is it OK?

terrieburt504
2008-11-30, 13:19
so you are saying i should go to say like WindowBBS.com or something

Shaba
2008-11-30, 13:24
Yes I can re-direct you to some windows forum.

Before that you can try to do a system restore to some earlier restore point if you like to and post back if it helped.

terrieburt504
2008-11-30, 13:25
i would if i knew how to do it

Shaba
2008-11-30, 13:29
This (http://bertk.mvps.org/html/restoresysv.html) might help here.

Please choose restore point before connection problems started.

k im at the part where i do system restore but i want to go further back before i had my infection. I can restore back to there but wont i be having the infection problem again?

Shaba
2008-11-30, 13:40
You can attempt to do a system restore to point before that infection.

terrieburt504
2008-11-30, 13:50
k the furthest i can go is Nov 19 but i know i had the infection then and it wont let me go further back

terrieburt504

k the furthest i can go is Nov 19 but i know i had the infection then and it wont let me go further back

pretty sure i had it before i started contacting you on the 21

Shaba
2008-11-30, 13:52
Yes but as you are not anymore connected to that infected router, it can be cleaned by just running MBAM again.

HI shaba just curious with the state that my computer is in do you think that if i created the os disks like i was supposed to, do you think that they would be corrupt?

terrieburt504
2008-12-02, 06:51
Hi its terrieburt504 here again. Just curious how do i know that i have that trojan. I do spybot searchs all the time and that one does not show up. I see that file being scanned at the bottom of the spybot window but it is not identifying it as a trojan or virus. So am i safe from that?

Shaba
2008-12-02, 15:46
That is possible, yes.

As for vundo, spybot goes through its definitions; it doesn't mean that you are infected.
