I have AntivirusPro 2009 and possibly something else on my roommate's computer.

I've tried everything I know. I can't get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or Spybot to run, even in safe mode.

Here's the log, TIA.

hi,

we can try this; first we will use hjt, then boot into safe mode to look for some files to delete. you should copy/paste the safe mode part into notepad and save it so you can read it in safe mode. before using hjt;

disable spy bots tea timer, how:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

ok next: we will use hjt:

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [brastk] brastk.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SVCHOST.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nah_Shell] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\nah_idsc.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [brastk] C:\WINDOWS\system32\brastk.exe
--------------------------------
time for safe mode:

you know how to get into safe mode, chose first option from list safe mode
once at the safe mode desktop:

to help show all files you can do this:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,at the top click on> tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
look for and delete if found: brastk.exe

navigate to;
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers ("drivers" is a folder in the system32 dir))
look for and delete if found inside of the folder: svchost.exe

navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner
look for and delete: nah_idsc.exe

also in safe mode:

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

click Start>Run then type %windir%\temp
hit ok. delete all the files you can

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

reboot computer normally and try running malwarebytes.

I could NOT disable spy bots tea timer, because I could not get Spybot-S&D to run.

I ran HJT, and deleted

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [brastk] brastk.exe

and

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nah_Shell] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\nah_idsc.exe

I did not delete the others, because they were not there.

I went into safe mode, and deleted brastk.exe

I tried to delete svchost.exe, but got this error "Cannot delete svchost: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

The disk is not full.

I hit ctrl-alt-delete and went to processes. svchost.exe is in the list three times. I tried to end the process on the last one in the list, then got a System Shutdown window, giving me a 60 second warning "The system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. any unsaved changes will be lost..."

So I let it restart and here is the new log file:

I renamed the desktop icon and it still will not run. Spybot will not run, even with a renamed icon. I've tried in normal and in safe mode. I've tried to get the machine to restore to an earlier date, and that won't work either.

ok lets try this;

go to one of the links below to download combofix.

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

before saving it--> change its file name <--- to scanme.exe then save to your desktop.

before using scanme.exe please close all your anti-malware and antivirus. usually a right click/exit,close on the icon by the clock will do it.

double click scanme.exe to run, you will be prompted to install the MS recovery console, most likely its not installed. chose yes to install it.
follow the rest of the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

there is more info here you can read if you want to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

I downloaded the program to a flash drive from another machine and renamed it. I launched it on the infected computer. I lied and clicked that I agreed to the terms of service when I had no idea what they were and it started to run. Then I got this message: "ComboFix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine". I clicked OK and went to go make a sandwich.

Since it looked like that might have worked, I then ran Spybot.

I got a message, "Please re-apply immunization after this update. It is recommended that you do a full scan after this update."

Now I am running search and destroy.

ok good. how was your sandwich?
try running malwarewarebytes also while your at it.

Julene
2008-11-25, 05:54
The sandwich was dry. We didn't have any cheese or mayo, so it was just bread and roast beef.

I ran the S&D and it took a long time. It deleted 535 out of 538 bad files, then had to run a restart search to get the other three. It is working on that right now. It is at file 11500 or 342000.

Julene
2008-11-25, 14:56
On restart there was a problem with the Norton Utilities that came with the machine so I went to add and delete and deleted it. The machine then restarted on its own.

The Malwarebytes icon that was on the desktop did nothing, so I deleted it. I then deleted the Malwarebytes folder from program files and re-downloaded and re-installed it.

Since the web browser did not get hijacked when I downloaded Malwarebyes, I'm starting to think we've got this one.

I ran Malwarebytes and performed a full scan. It found 18 more infected files, which were removed. Malwarebytes required a restart.

I gotta go to class.

hi,

ok good. not done yet. its possible the flash drive you used is infected now. I wouldnt use it. we need to install the ms recovery console. click the combofix icon and you will be prompted to install it. follow the prompts, let combofix do another scan. please post the the new combofix log and the last malwarebytes log. you have up to date/active antivirus software on your computer? wouldnt hurt to scan with it also.

you can get the last malwarebytes log like this:
The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
