View Full Version : Unable to remove "Virus Alert!"

Hi there,

This is my first time visiting this forum, and the first post as well.
Sorry if any impolite or improper words/info appear in this article.

The situation was that I found my laptop was installed a software called spywarequake without any acknowledgement or my consent.

First of all I disconnect the network and run virus scan (with Norton AntiVirus). Then I found the situation remained, there was even a unknown icon appeared in my system tray taskbar, which is my article title "Virus Alert!". I believe most people who had experienced it will realize what that system tray icon is, so I'm not gonna explain it.

I checked task manager and found 2 to 3 unfamiliar programmes: nvctrl.exe, mssearchnet.exe, and conime.exe. Appreciate to google I found ways and tools to remove them successfully. However, the system tray icon is still there.

I then followed the removal provided by Grinler in the following URL:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic47826.html

The annoying icon didn't dissapear. Then I found this forum and followed tashi's instruction: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=3261

It seems that I have successfully get rid of most potential threat of spywarequake by removing the programme, stickrep.dll, mssearch.exe, nvctrl.exe, and conime.exe. But the icon just won't go away :(

Below are the logs, thanks for any help with this problem:

By the way, I forgot to say one important thing.
The "Virus Alert!" icon apears even in safe mode!!
It almost apears at the same time with the clock.

Hello

Download Pocket Killbox to the desktop (version 2.0.0.648)
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
If you already have killbox ensure it is the latest version. ?
Start Killbox place a tick next to [x]Delete on reboot
Copy this bolded below into the windows clipboard

C:\WINDOWS\system32\suprox.dll

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard,
Click the red highlighted X button and say yes to the prompt to restart the pc.

After the PC has restarted go here
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0
and attach that dll, it should be in the folder killbox made, C:\!killbox folder

Dear LonnyRJones,

Thanks for your advice, I have successfully remove that annoying icon. :bigthumb:
I aslo posted in SpyKiller and upload "suprox.dll".

There is still one question:
can I then delete the whole folder of C:\!killbox including suprox.dll?
or should I copy C:\!killbox\suprox.dll back to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ ?

Really really really appreciate!!

Did spywarequake get installed again ? if so uninstall it via addremove programs and delete its folder in program files

Yes delete the Killbox folder

Make and run this registry file
Launch Notepad (not wordpad), and copy and paste the contents of the code box below into a new text file.
Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]
"{E2CA7CD1-1AD9-F1C4-3D2A-DC1A33E7AF9D}"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E2CA7CD1-1AD9-F1C4-3D2A-DC1A33E7AF9D}]

Now double-click on the fixme.reg file you saved and click on the Yes button when it asks if you would like to merge the information. Once you get a successful message delete fixme.reg.

Restart your PC.

Is it still running OK ?
Think Prevention:
Put in place a good hosts file
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm
Replace it about once monthly to keep it updated

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"

Im Glad we could help Figarotwo

Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let Me or Tashi know.
