View Full Version : smitfraud-c.gp has control (Solved)
Hi,
Any help will be much appreciated! A little background. I have a desktop and a laptop that both appear to be infected. It appeared first yesterday. I have a few external drives that I use to manually backup my computers. I assume that this is how it spread from one to another. The laptop is in worse shape and has noticeable problems with incorrect links in a google search.
The desktop only had one teatimer detection this log entry is pasted below.
"11/24/2008 11:12:43 AM Encountered and terminated Smitfraud-C.gp in C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe!"
All I have done with the desktop is scan with spybot and adaware. They did not pick up anything.

Download and Run RSIT
Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:
log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.
Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
Thank you for your help! This is likely more information than you need but I figure too much is better than not enough. Sorry.
In the post above I mentioned that I am having issues with desktop and laptop. I ended up backing up the files I cared about on the laptop, reformatted the drive and reinstalled windows. Some of the drivers and software used on the rebuild were downloaded but not opened on an infected computer. I then put the files on a freshly formatted usb drive and started the rebuild. I have not moved any of the old files on to the rebuilt laptop. I am waiting untill you give the all clear.
Enough about the laptop this thread so far is about the desktop.
I have the desktop, 2-3.5" external drives, one 2.5" external drive that I used for backup away from home, and 2 -usb drives. Because I did not need the data, I reformatted the usb drives and 2.5" drives on the infected computer in explorer.
You mentioned "Please ensure that any USB/Flash/External drives are connected whilst we are cleaning your machine." One of the power supplies for my external drives is dead so I can only run one at a time. How should I handle this? Also do I need to worry about the usb drives or the 2.5" drive that I formatted?
Here is a list of things that I have connected to my system and may/maynot need to be concerned about. Let me know what I should do with these things or even if there is something cause worry about them.
-MP3 player
-Phone that runs windows mobile and syncs with outlook on my laptop. I had not syncd it for several days prior to seeing any problems
- sd cards that I use in a camera and copy via a card reader to my computer.

Step 1
Disable Teatimer
First step: Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident Second step, For Either Version : Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

I have downloaded malwarebytes and ran full scan. I ran the full scan 2x because of the 2 external drives that I can only hook on up at a time.
I have removed the programs you mentioned. I will install foxit when we are done.
How is the computer running? - well it hard to say it seemed that the internet may be a bit slower. One of the problems that I had was that the time reset itself to 24hr time from the normal system time. This happened on the laptop and if I changed it to 12hr after some time it would automatically revert to 24hr time. On this computer I have just changed the time back to 12hr but haven't given it much time to automatically revert.

The redirecting problems were on my laptop. Not this desktop. My concerns regarding this computer started after the similar problems with the laptop.
- On this computer it started with a teatimer warning "11/24/2008 11:12:43 AM Encountered and terminated Smitfraud-C.gp in C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe!"
- Next was that my clock changed on its own to 24hr time. (This also happened on my laptop.)
- Yesterday when I was running the scans I deleted a file and windows came back with an error stating that the recycle bin was corrupt.

Yes, the desktop seems to be running better than before.
I reset the clock to 12hr and it has remained on 12hr. So that is definitely good!
For the recycle bin - I believe that it was just a ".txt" file. After the one message that the recycle bin was corrupted it seems to work fine.

Regarding the outlook files - I have a fair amount of information that I would like from those files and would prefer not to delete if possible. Occasionally I receive suspicious emails and just delete them. I am thinking that these may be sitting in the deleted mail folders. May I open these files through outlook and delete most of the emails and rescan to see if it is clean?
Both machines were attacked/infected within a day of each other. Is this normal? Could this have been two isolated events? Or would this have been spread from one computer to another? The computers are connected by the external usb drives and by wireless to access the internet.

1) That sounds fine as long as you are careful.
2) It was probably the external drives that allowed the infection to spread.

First lets tidy up
Uninstall Combofix
This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

Enable Teatimer
RIGHT click Link >>> HERE <<< Link (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat) and select "save as" and save it to your desktop
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

Prevention

Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.
Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords
Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25) Free and very simple to use
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.
If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

Thanks for all the help!
I opened outlook and emptied all of my deleted items out of outlook and the archived folders without opening any emails. I then rescanned using the kaspersky online scanner. It came back as all clean.
