Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

Uninstall one of those and post a new HJT log

I would also like an uninstall list after ths above is complete.
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Probable Backdoor.Tidserv Infection <<< tell me why you think you have this infection.

Thanks

I'm not sure how much information you want, but I have been working
on this for days. The first symptom was my Google search results
being hijacked such that clicking on the results links would take
me to other undesired sites. As I cleaned up problems, other ones
would appear. Some of the things that McAfee cleaned up include:
DeepDive.gen
Generic PUP.x
Exploit-MS06-014
JS/Tenia.d
Generic Downloader.g

At a sysadmin's suggestion, I installed Symantec and it has reported
cleaning up:
Trojan (C:\System Volume Information\_restore{ ... }RP3/A0003517.dll)
Trojan (C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSacsn.dll)
Backdoor.Tidserv
Downloader.MisleadApp
Trojan (C:\System Volume Information\_restore{ ... }RP1\A0002027.sys)
Trojan (TDSSserv.sys)
Trojan (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSxvpu.sys)
W32.Myparty@mm

But the big remaining problem that Symantec cannot fix is the
Backdoor.Tidserv. It keeps finding one or more copies of it and
is able to delete all but one. It is always in a Symantec
temporary directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\APTemp

in files named APQnn.tmp, where nn is a 1- or 2-digit number
or letter.

I tried to uninstall Symantec but was unable to because it hangs
trying to remove this unremovable APQnn.tmp file. I tried deleting
the temp file via Windows Explorer but it hangs Explorer as soon
as I hit the Del key. I tried uninstalling Symantec again and this
time it hung during the "Gathering required information" step.

I also tried uninstalling McAfee but ran into various problems
with that, as well. When I try to uninstall it, I'm told that
I can't because it's currently running. When I try to turn it
off through the configuration options, it hangs on the page with
the message "Please wait until SecurityCenter finishes collecting
your configuration details". My preference would be to keep
McAfee since I have a paid up subscription to it, but at this
point, I will do anything you say.

Earlier, I installed Rootkit Revealer and confirmed that there was
a rootkit involved, which I think it called Win32.TDSS.rtk. But
when I run it now, it hangs trying to access the same Symantec
temp directory mentioned above.

Thanks very much for your help!

Morning Joe and thanks for the information. I have dealt with this infection before and can tell you because of the rootkit driver, it can be tough to remove:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-091809-0911-99&tabid=2

My preference would be to keep
McAfee since I have a paid up subscription to it, but at this
point, I will do anything you say.
I would say keep what you paid for but that Symantec program must come off, if you read the links you understand the issues running two powerful programs at the same time can cause. I will say you can wait until the infection is under control if it helps and you should uninstall via Add Remove if at all possible. Here is the tool Symantec/Norton has made available.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Follow all directions carefully and in the posted order.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Tutorial if needed

Thanks for returning your information, let's proceed like this and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you may leave this if you set it on purpose)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

c:\windows\system32\TDSSqqon.dll <<< delete that file, let me know it was deleted.

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

I found and deleted TDSSqqon.dll.

I successfully uninstalled Symantec.

I ran a McAfee scan and it turned up a PUP of Tool-NirCmd. It looks
like this is used by ComboFix, so I told it to treat it as Trusted.
Please let me know if this was a mistake. I'm assuming that when
we're all done, I should remove ComboFix. Do you know if it will
remove Tool-NirCmd when it does?

By the way, when I run Microsoft's Rootkit Revealer, it lists some
discrepancies. Should I be concerned about this? Do you want to
see the list?

Here's the Anti-Malware log, followed by a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, we will removed combofix and clean System Restore files next, but post that information from
Microsoft's Rootkit Revealer. I don't use it often and would like to see what it is showing you.

Post the complete name and location of the PUP McAfee is reporting also.

Thanks...Phil

All of the Rootkit Revealer items are showing 0 bytes so there appears to be nothing there. Might be dead registry entries, I would not worry about them.

The other item C:\System Volume Information\_restore (System Restore)

Let's wrap up like this.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I will read those resources.

One last question, I hope. Does this set of infections suggest that
my hard drive contents have most likely been transmitted somewhere
across the globe?

I really appreciate your help! I learned a lot. I'm planning on
making a donation.

I share your sentiment about thanking a soldier, by the way. Can't
thank them enough!

My gut feeling is this trojan is more about fraud, trying to get folks to purchase worthless rouge removers, but it is a backdoor and I am not about to suggest the hackers could not be after information. I would take all precautions including changing all passwords.

There's one more problem that started during my malware cleaning
debacle and I'm wondering if you might have some insight into it.
I believe that it started when I installed Spybot, and I have
been unable to fix it. The problem is that I cannot log in to
EBay with IE6 anymore. I get a "The browser you are using is
rejecting cookies" error message when I try. I have confirmed
that I have cookies enabled and even if I enable third-party
cookies or select "Always allow session cookies", it doesn't
help. I tried deleting cookies and clearing the cache.

I am able log in to EBay with Firefox and I haven't noticed any
cookied-related problems with other websites using IE6, Do you
have any ideas?

Thanks.

Here is some informtion about controlling cookies with Internet Explorer.

and some information for Firefox:

I believe it is unlikely Spybot S&D would cause the issue, you can ask experts with that tool here: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

It is more likely a setting in IE is causing the issue. The first thing I suggest is that you update to Internet Explorer 7 (which is more secure and IE8 has already been released in beta) to see if that fixes the problem.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

Let's see if that fixes the problems.
