View Full Version : Runing Spyboot shots off my PC

I believe that my PC is having a spyware that is undetected by all of my spyware removal tools. I started to observed that my windows explorer was running slow about a week already. I tried to check my PC with Zone Alarm spyware removal, spyboot sd, Adaware SE, Windows Defender, and the latest that I had tried to install is Noadware but it seems nothing would cure it. I also had run Norton System Works - One touch and tried to fixed all errors but still my windows explorer (at times other softwares too) wont run the way it use to be. If I click on a word file on my explorer the ms word would open without any files opened. I have to click the file again to have it opened.

Lately I have observed that everytime I update my Spyboot SD and run a check on my PC, it would shot off (I would like to use shot off here instead of shot down because my PC shots off without any warning - just plain off). I do believe that this spyware has the control over spyboot. It may change the setting of spyboot so that it would not detect it. I believe it is so because if I turn my PC back on and try to run spyboot again, it would complete the scan without any spys detected. I believe, this spy could be detected by zone labs but could not control it also. One time as I was running spyboot on the background, while playing spider solitare, when my pc shots off. But before that, I saw a warning from zone labs i.e. if I would alow or not to run the software. But before I could react, my PC shots off. I tried to open the log files of zone labs to see if it was recorded in there, but the log showed empty (not even a single entry).

I am using windows xp home sp2 with spywareblaster and winpatrol also installed on it. I have avg for virus protection. Though I have Norton system works 2005, I had uninstalled the antivirus protection because it uses a lot of memory.

Hoping help is coming from your end soon.

first you need to move hjt out of the temp dir. into its own folder.
see link:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
---------------------------------
do you have any idea what this is?

C:\Program Files\wgp

does it show in the add/remove programs panel?

--------------------------------
try updating then running all your malware apps in SAFE MODE
you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a computer restart.

I had put my hjt into directory C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Karlo D. Seva\My Documents\Downloads\Hijackthis. The place where I put all my downloads from the internet but it has its own directory "Hijacthis". Its not located on the temp folder of windows, but if it is necessary that it should be placed on the main root, then I would transfer it (please advise).

Wgp is Wingard Pro 2006, a program that encripts files. I also believe that this is the culprit (as it has the capacity to shut down pcs after an activity-maybe and error on its program) and I have already disabled it (just today) using winpatrol. I am still observing my pc at the moment. I had updated Spyboot SD yesterday and again while checking my pc it shut off. Had run it again but it shuts off again. I had also observed that even though I am not running spyboot my pc whould still shut off but this happens occationally only. It was only now that I had run spyboot sd succesfully (this after I had disabled wgp) with one spyware found. The spyware that was found was about a fake spyware remover software and I think its the NoAdware that I have installed lately. Its a trial software and I plan to uninstall this.

Thank you verymuch for the reply and would be waiting for more advises from your end.

hi hotjoeker,

nevermind about moving hjt, my bad. i dont see any malware in the log and you have several good malware apps

shutdown after a task ok, but a shutdown on error isnt good. i would uninstall it if you think thats the problem, then see how computer behaves.

Hi,

It seems that my PC is fine now. I would just be waiting for another update from spyboot sd and then would try to scan my PC again; as this is where I always observed that my PC shutsdown (while scanning with spyboot). Though my PC is still slow, I think I would add some RAM to solve the problem. It must be that this is so because I had a lot of software intalled on it from download.com.

I would just post a new thread when I had observed something new. Again, thank you very much.

hi hotjoeker,

glad to help. for your reference:

Be careful of what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software. You may be installing more than you think. Make sure you understand what it is you will be downloading and installing to your computer. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?. Read the EULA agreement, you know, that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. DO YOU TRUST THE SOURCE?

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp)
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm)
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/security/settings.mspx)
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser. You can have and use more than one browser on your computer.
Like Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/),

Install a Firewall:A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall. If you use Zone Alarm learn what needs/uses your internet connection. If something unusal or out of the ordinary "asks" deny it access until more investigation is done.
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass)
OutPost Lite (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)

Outlook Express with the default settings is not secure. It will run scripts, download images etc, just like a browser. You dont have to use it.
look here (http://www.codecutters.org/outlook/)
and here (http://www.tames.net/security/oesettings.htm)
Or try Pegasus Mail, safer by default,no tweaking needed. (http://www.pmail.com/)

Make sure you have and keep updated Antivirus software
