Hi,
I am a new member looking for help (I posted in the Spybot section, but realized it was wrong place).
I got a vundo virus recently, and it seems to be gone,
but when I run Highjackthis it showed several entries in the 02 section
with "no name, no file" attributes. After I deleted these, they reappeared on the next logon.
Should I be worried?
How can I get read of these entries?

Thanks in advance:mad:

hi

see this topic BEFORE you post a log, and who will advise you. Preliminary Steps (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

and post your hijackthis log thank you

I tried all recommended steps:
Spybot keep saying "congratulations!)
McAfee detected and cleaned 1 vundo trojan.
Then VundoFix found and cleaned 2 more vundo trojans.
Microtrend Housecall online scan detected and cleaned Troj_keenval.A.

But several entries keep reappearing in the Highjackit scan log:
three 02 BHO entries saying "no name, no file"
and two 016 DPF entries without info - after I deleted them in Highjack, they keep reappearing after each reboot.

That's my log file.

hi

yep, there are no signs of vundo in the hjt log, just some leftovers.

lets fix those like this:

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
Run Spybot-S&D
Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

next open hiajckthis
click do a system scan only
checkmark/fix these with all browser and explorer windows closed:

reboot

to make sure nothing is hiding:

Please download ewido anti malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a free version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:

reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido anti malware.

reboot back to normal mode, post the ewido report and a log from a fresh hjt scan

you seem to have old versions of SUN java installed
the old vulnerable versions are exploited by the vundo trojan!!

see this topic for info how to resolve it:

And a popup "fastclick.net" appears once in a while: it usually disappears quickly by itself. Also, some server connection troubles (might be not related to this though...).

I've done all recommended steps (Spybot check, cleaning in Safe mode, then updated Java): at this point Spybot, McAfee and Microtrend Housecall can't see anything wrong

Thanks for your help

Hi,
The BHO and DPF items I can't get rid of using HijackThis seem to be related to something called Netster.
When I look at the Active controls in Spybot it shows Netster, but when I click on it to fix - nothing happens, it stays.
However, after I deleted those BHO and DPF items from the HijackThis - the Netster Active control in Spybot disappeared also.

(However, the problem is that ehy all come back very soon - after reboot or maybe after using IE)

Trendmicro Housecall online scan found the following (could not clean):

BHO_SE.52578
ADW_SE.129196

(Google did not show info).

Thanks very much - I appreciate your help...
Hopefully it can be fixed, and I could upgrade to SP2

hi

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
Run Spybot-S&D
Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

when completed, open hijackthis, click do a system scan only
checkmark these entries :
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

then close all other windows, leaving only hiajckthis running
and click fix checked

reboot

run a spybot scan, allow it to fix all red entries

reboot

re-enable tea timer

rescan with hiajckthis and post a final hijackthis log

Hi, ILUCCA:
Thanks for trying to help me:

However, at thia point I feel confused and frustrated.

Let me explain what is going on:

I did steps you suggested, (however, I don't understand what's wrong with JAVA plug-in? Actually, It seesm like a legitimate entry - after I deleted the plugin DPF, another line in BHO says: Java, file missing. Should I restore this line? Especially since deleting it did nothing to fix my problem).

Now, about the malware: briefly, in addition to the steps you recommended, I used Cleanup, Hoster, Ewido in safe mode. Nothing helped.

Now the strangest thing: I disable Resident in Spybot, run HijackThis, fix those entries, run HijackThis again - it's clean. Reboot - HijackThis run shows clean system.

Then I go back to the Spybot and reenable the Resident: it opens a popup window and asking at this moment if I want to allow or not some entry. And after that I run HijackThis and voila! all entries are back

Essentially, I have some kind of self-regenerating program which is deployed with the reenabling of the Spybot Resident...

P.S. No problems were disclvered by McAfee and Spybot. As I said in my previous post - Trendmicro Housecall discovered 2 items.

That's my last log.

hi

yep, those are really stubborn b*stards

the problem with java is that older versions of it are vulnerable to malware attacks
it is recommended that all previous versions must be uninstalled when upgrading to the latest one. btw there recently was another java update..

lets uninstall spybot

after uninstall reboot, then fix the items mentioned with hijackthis

reboot

post a fresh log

There was also Java-related BHO line saying "file missing" which I also deleted from the Hijack scan. I am wondering - should I reinstall Java? I yes, how do I uninstall the old version? It's not listed in the Remove programs Control Panel..

After claening I reinstalled Spybot.

There is one small but annoying problem: the text in the resident window does not fit in - those boxes asking "allow" or "deny" are lost somewhere at the bottom.
The same happened with my husband's laptop.

It's strange that this problem appeared on my laptop after I reinstalled Spybot.
I am not sure how to fix the window.

(although this is not related to the spyware removal, but this nuisance appeared in the process - maybe someone can give a hint?)

Thanks in advance

Thanks very much for your help!

It seems that all malware is gone for now! (until they invent more - it was really "creative" to have attached some bad stuff to the Spybot Resident):bigthumb:

hi

that's not really the case. spybots resident locks certain areas of the registry very effectively. preventing even us from deleting the bad entries ;)
luckily those were just registry items, no files :)

i'm about to close this topic now. you know who to contact if you need it reopened :)

glad we could help

I got the same old Fastclick window lurking in the background (I would not be concerned too much but there are some connection problems - loosing connection - and I would like to get rid of all the bad stuff for these troubleshooting reasons...)

The Fastclick window appears to hide behind the MS Outlook. It closes quickly but sometimes gets frozen (an empty window with the Fasatclick info in the bar).

Spybot did not find anything wrong.

I run Panda online scan, and it discovered Cydoor cookies in Mozilla and Cydoor dll file.
I am wondering if Mozilla itself installed Cydoor? (I don't have pnp programs like Kazaa). And what is also strange - that a cydoor dummy is in the Spypot directory, but Spybot does not see Cydoor itself?

That's my Hajack log:

(Since the 1st post, I upgraded to SP2 and updated Java).

hi
the hijackthis log shows no problems, just that java item :(

can you post some more info?

Make a new folder in the c:\drive called silentrunners

Download 'silent runners" from here: (direct download)

http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs

Save it to your silentrunners folder.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter

Type the following exactly and hit enter after each line.

cd c:\silentrunners and hit enter
"silent runners.vbs" -alland hit enter

wait until it pops up saying its completed, then post the resulting logfile here
it will be very large
you may need several posts to include everything

Hi chucketti

Sorry about the delay, mention the problems again please.

That's OK - summertime...

The problem might not seem very big - but since there are some connection problems happening in my system at the same time, I would like to get rid of all the malware as a part of troubleshooting.
It's fastclick: a window wit the fastclick address usually appeares at the slosing of MS outlook window. Usually, it closes itself quickly, but sometimes remains frozen.

I run several different antivirus and ant-spyware programs, but this one is still in the system :(

Hi, ILUCCA

The popup window always appears quickly after I open and close MS Outlook, even if all browsers are closed (and haven't been opened since reboot).
It seems attached to MS Outlook.

I did not know it's there until couple times it got frozen for some reason, There are no ads, just an empty window.

I think maybe I'll leave it on that (you are saying the log is fine) because it seems that Fastclick does nothing in my system at this point (although some malware is obviously present - but it seems harmless maybe due to overall protection of my system.)

I might have gotten the malware from a German uploading-downloading service rapidshare.de which I regularly use, since the same fastclick (but carrying ads, not empty) showed up in another system (a different location, not connected with the current system).

Anyway, It's good that you did not see anything ominous - thank you very much for the help.
:)

hi

i'd like to get to the bottom of this if possible ;)
so one more scan

Download GMER from http://www.gmer.net

Save it somewhere safe & unzip it to desktop

Double click the gmer.exe to run it and select the rootkit tab, press scan and when it has finished press save and copy the log back here please.

Hi,
I like that you don't give up :)

(I am the same way - but in a different field)

I only got a very short log - not sure that's what we need.
I run gmer as you instructed: rootkit - scan, but there was no "save" option, only "copy" which I did and came to this text:

GMER 1.0.10.10122 - http://www.gmer.net
Rootkit 2006-06-24 11:12:09
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.10 ----

Instructions on the Gmer site also say to use "copy"...

Ya, it's a Dell laptop.
I think there is some dead window attached to my MS Outlook.
I does not seem to do any harm at this point.

Thanks alot for your help!

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
