Need help getting rid of Vcodec.Emedia

Hello,

I am having a problem getting rid of Vcodec.Emedia.

Ran BitDefender. "Virus found! Your computer might be infected. c:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE ....Update failed (I have the log file, but it runs me over the allowed number of characters for a post).

Ran Norton Antivirus 2006 with latest definitions, nothing found.

Ran Spybot S&D 1.4 Latest detection update:2006-04-21.
Vcodec.eMedia found
Ran fix problem. Message "Some problems couldn't be fixed...May Spybot-S&D run on next system Startup?" Answered yes. On restart, same song second verse. It is won't go away.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware 3.5 from here:

Install Ewido anti-malware.
When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.
Dont run a scan yet
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.

Click on Scanner
Click on Settings

Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
Under What to scan select Scan every file
Click on Ok

Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.

Click Save Report button
Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot your pc.
The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

I have downloaded Ewido as you suggested. The install appears to go normal. Even get a finished button. When I try to start the program, the main screen flashes onto the computer, but immediately disappears. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled. Same thing. I then uninstalled, deleted, and downloaded from the site again. Same results. Any suggestions?

I still have the emedia codec problem showing up in SpyBot. When I ask the program to fix this, it tries then asks to fix on restart. Do-loopish. I can see an Emedia Codec :

MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\eMedia Codec.

When I try to look to see if there is a value there, I get the message that eMedia Codec cannot be opened. The only symptom that I cannot attribute to anything else is periodic monitor flashes. I am guessing (danerous thing I know) that SpyBot is seeing the key, and this is where the diagnosis of a problem comes from. It is bothersome in that I finally have the other users in my household convinced to run SpyBot on a regular basis, and it is difficult to preach safety and then say ignore it. If this is where the diagnosis is coming from, is there a way to get rid of the key?

Your seeing Uninstall\eMedia Codec while scanning with SpyBot when logged into an account that has administrative rights ?

The keys permisions are probaly messed up
If your familur/confident with regedit ?
Go start run type regedit hit ok or enter
in Regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\eMedia Codec and highlight
eMedia Codec
and Rightclick > Permissions.
Then place a check next to allow full control (if its not there already) for each group, click apply then ok
Now rightclick delete

I am SO CONFUSED. I am logged on as an administrator. I even tried one of the other user accounts that is an administrator. It will not let me change the permission for the eMedia Codec key. I get the following message:

Unable to save permission changes on eMedia Codec. Access denied.

I tried in safe mode so that the "Administrator" user shows up, and that did not work either. Any suggestions? Is there a KillBox type program for key deletion?

Thats odd, You realize this is just an anomaly, we do not really need to address the reg key since the infection is gone ?

Lets try Avenger
1: Please download The Avenger (http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip) by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2: Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):



Registry keys to delete:

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3: Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4: The Avenger will automatically do the following:

It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
