I recently got a virus/trojan(?) from MSN messanger ... the bug instantly disabled norton and then proceeded to alter some registry files ...
I ran Spybot - SD and it found several things including something called "FAKEMSN8Beta", which i assumed to be the origional parisite, and other bots which prevented me from going to almost anysite related to anti-spyware/virius help
...moreover, after runing Sybot agian , the program would not work .. it said
something about a "library of detection rules was needed to run" .. uninstalled and then reinstaled and then Spybot SD worked again .. I rebooted in safe mode and ran both progams again and found and deleted the same bots/bugs ...
reboot in to normal mode and this time only "FAKEMSN8Beta" was found ...
I could now visit other sites agian ...
I did several days research on various forums and found a little program called
MsnVirRem ... followed the instruction for this program and rebooted in safe mode and ran it ..
MsnVirRem found three items and posted them in a log (i do not have this log
anymore as i ran the program again and it automatically made a new log overwiting the old one .. incidentaly, the rescan found nothing)I believe the items were "csrss.exe" and "lsass.exe" (these were not the one's my system uses as the deleted ones were located in an oddly named folder (hidden) and both programs still show in taskmanager)rebooted in normal mode and then once again ran Sybot - SD and Ad-adwareSE and this time "FAKEMSN8Beta" did not show ... However, upon start-up i noticed that norton was still starting in "unenabled" mode everytime and i have to enable it
manually everytime. Now i went to get Ewido and ran it in safemode following the
instructions when installing: under "Additional Options" uncheck..
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
ran in safe mode and it found a wack of cookies which i deleted. Went and got an online scan done by Panda ActiveScan and it found several trojans which were then deleted.
Rebooted my system and Norton still automatically disables itself on start-up. And i have ensured that the "Start Auto-protect when Windows starts up" box IS checked. Another occurance that i have noticed is that when i try to start WinTasks 5 it shuts down right away. I am not sure if this is the virus or not as no other applications are affected this way (although opening the registry editor used to cuase the same thing to happen, but this no longer happens).
I am convinced that whatever changes to the registry the virus initially did are still affecting my system and could use whatever advice you could give me. Here is my latest HJT Log:
