I've tried to remove it a number of times after it comes up after doing a SpyBot scan but I can't.

Hello and welcome to the forum. You still have stuff in this log that needs to go. Let's see if HJT will remove it.
1) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

2) Windows Defender will block the HJT fix we must make,
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www/search
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
(the next Yahoo! item is damaged, if you use it, install it again once we are done)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\windows\mousepad9.exe >>> file
C:\windows\keyboard9.exe >>> file
C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.
Please download delcmdservice (by Marckie), http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/delcmdservice.zip
and save it to your Desktop.
Unzip the content to your Desktop (a folder named delcmdservice)
Double-click on the delcmdservice folder
Double-click on delreg.bat to launch the tool
When the tool has finished, please reboot your computer and post a new HJT log along with your comments.

I followed your instructions as best as I was able except for the following - when I checked everything I was supposed to check in Hijack This and clicked "Fix Checked" a box containing the following dialogue appeared:
"An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs303169569.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument
Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible
Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1
This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan."
I clicked OK and continued.
I was, however, then unable to locate:
C:\windows\mousepad9.exe>>>file and
C:\windows\keyboard9.exe>>>file
I then continued to follow the balance of the instructions without mishap.
After I restarted I ran SpyBot again and Command Service is still there.

G'Day mate, The Command service issue is a glitch in Spybot. We will work more on it once we have a clean log. First I need to make you aware that I would like to do this for you, but alas, I am in Florida and cannot. Now these items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mousepad] C:\windows\mousepad9.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [keyboard] C:\windows\keyboard9.exe
are still in the log, as are others that we listed for removal. These items must go and in order for you to delete them, you must be able to find them. Some spyware programs may block HJT from fixing stuff, that is why I have you turn off Windows Defender. eTrust Internet Security Suite could also be blocking our efforts. You will also have to turn TeaTimer off as it will surely block HJT changes: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
Now it is important to read through, make sure you have no reason to be online for anything, then take the computer offline since you are shutting down your protection. Once you are offline, then proceed. You might wish to print the instructions or save them to the Desktop in notepad, if you have to use safe mode, you will not be able to see this information.
Before you start, if you must run HJT from your Desktop, please make a folder and call it say HJT, then move the log and HJT.exe into that folder. There will be backups that need to be safely in there also.
1) First you must see them, if they are hidden you can not so you must unhide them. Here are more detailed instructions and keep in mind if they are hidden, your search engine may not even find them:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Now that we have unhidden them, now use your Start > Search Companion and click on All Files and Folders, then type or copy/paste the full pathway of the files in the search box. Alllow time, some times it takes a while, here is what you MUST find.
C:\windows\mousepad9.exe
C:\windows\keyboard9.exe
Chances are very good that they will be in the C:\Windows\ <<< folder
Now once you know where they are, we need to use HJT again and any program that will block the fix must be turned off. The alternative to this would be to do this in safe mode.

So you will know, HJT is a small Process Manager. When you use it to check and remove items, it stops the running processes so you can go to the files and delete them. You must do this before a reboot. Here are the instructions again.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer. Let's leave TeaTimer off until you try this:
Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your Desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted !!.

A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.

Hope the weather's fine in sunny Florida.
I followed your instructions without problem except for one thing:
C:\windows\mousepad9.exe
C:\windows\keyboard9.exe
were files which I couldn't find by doing a search of my C drive. I tried a number of times to no avail despite having followed your instructions (without any problem) about unhiding files.
However, having disabled Tea Timer, eTrust, and Windows Defender I had no problem this time getting HJT to remove the files you specified.
Having done that and followed the rest of your instructions SpyBot didn't pick up Command Service after restarting the computer and running a check.
The text from ren-cmdservice is:
"Error: Key: system\currentcontrolset\services\cmdservice does not exist!

OK, thanks for the feedback and the HJT log is clean:bigthumb: Make sure your security programs are all reactivated and the critical files and filders are hidden again for safety. I see no folder for the logs, backups, etc. on your Desktop, this is a safety issue and things can get deleted. Your call.

Command Service came back when I was off-line.
To make sure this was in fact what had happened I opened a NotePad document and recorded what I was doing as I did it With the following result:

I then ran a scan on SpyBot and this was clear - nothing came up.
I then ran the ren-cmdservice bat file which gave me this text:

I restarted and ran a SpyBot scan again which again was clear - with the message "Congratulations - no immediate threats were found"
I checked the 2 check boxes in Resident.
3 SpyBot registry changes denied boxes then popped up and disappeared.
A box also opened from Windows defender and disappeared.
I restarted and ran SpyBot again.
Sure enough Command Service reappeared in the scan result.

(understand this is stuff that should remove very easily as these is no program, so it is the tools you are using that are blocking the fix and normally you would want them to stop changes, but in this case we need to make the changes)

Something is keeping these from being removed and it is probably TeaTimer.
You may have to uninstall Spybot and then reinstall it after you remove the stuff. Make sure WindowsDefender is turned off also.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Once you have successfully removed this stuff from the HJT log, then let me know if you still have the Command Service issue which I understand is a glitch in Spybot and is supposed to stop with the newest updates?

I have done a number of things since submitting my last post in response to your helpful links on preventing infection.
I checked whether I'd installed SP2 by going to My Computer - Help - About Windows and finding the following:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600. xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519. Service Pack 2)
So I assume SP2 is installed.
I then checked to see whether Ad-Aware and SpyBot were up to date (they were) and turned off my modem.
I then changed the permission on my profile from administrator to limited and created a new profile with administrator permission.
Working in the profile with limited permission I then went to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View and changed the settings to show hidden files and folders, and unchecked "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files..". I then clicked apply and OK.
I then went to Start-Explore - Search - All files and folders. In "All or part of the file name:" I typed "mousepad9". The search included hidden files and folders and system folder but came up with no result.
Then I did a search of files containing the words "mousepad9" and came up with 21 results - 3 Registration Entries, 8 Text Documents, 1 HTM File, 7 Registration Entries in blue font (as opposed to the other results which were in black font), and 2 XML Documents.
I didn't do an equivalent search for "keyboard9".
I then did an Ad-Aware scan with no critical objects found.
I then did a SpyBot scan which brought up "Avenue A,Inc" "Command Service" "DoubleClick" and "FastClick". I checked all and clicked Fix Selected Problems. SpyBot wasn't able to fix Command Service stating that it was open and suggested I restart.
I restarted and ran SpyBot again. Shortly after starting SpyBot Windows Defender briefly popped up a window which stated that CmdService, or something similar had made a registry change.
SpyBot found Command Service. I checked it and clicked Fix Selected Problems. SpyBot was unable to fix and asked for permission to start on my next start-up to remove problem. I gave it permsission and restarted.
SpyBot didn't start up automatically. I then ran it and it found Command Service again but again stated it was unable to remove it.
I then started my modem and went on to the internet to see if any replies to my thread. I then saw your post. Given the fact that I've been working on the computer since posting the previous HJT log it may be that the log has changed. I then turned the modem off.
I then turned off Windows Defender and Tea Timer and restarted the computer. I had to give myself administrator permission to do this.
I then snoozed eTrust AntiVirus again and ran HJT.
I then checked the box in front of the line items as per the instructions in your post of .
I clicked Fix Checked and the items seem to have been removed. Here's the log:

I then emptied the Recyle bin and restarted the computer, after which I opened rmd-cmdservice and produced the following text:

I then restarted the computer and ran SpyBot check with the result that Avenue A,Inc and Double Click came up.
I removed them and restarted the computer and ran SpyBot again.
This time everything was clear. The HJT log is now:
I turned Windows Defender realtime protection on but have left TeaTimer off.
I then changed my permission on this profile to limited and turned my modem back on and posted this. Hope it's not too detailed.
I will now turn off the modem again and stay offline except to go on periodically to check for any posts from you.
My inclination, unless you advise otherwise, is to uninstall and reninstall Spybot, run a virusscan and, if that is clear, instal Zone Alarm.

My inclination, unless you advise otherwise, is to uninstall and reninstall Spybot, run a virusscan and, if that is clear, instal Zone Alarm.Since the uninstallation of Spybot would have been to stop TeaTimer from blocking the removal of items in the log, I see no reason, if it is updated as you said, to uninstall it if it is working ok. As far as the Command Service issue, as I said it appears to be a glitch in spybot, but I have two tools to stop it from happening. See this information:

First fix:
Please download delcmdservice (by Marckie), http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/delcmdservice.zip
and save it to your Desktop.
Unzip the content to your Desktop (a folder named delcmdservice)
Double-click on the delcmdservice folder
Double-click on delreg.bat to launch the tool
When the tool has finished, please reboot your computer
Second fix:
Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your Desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted !!.

Zone Alarm free is a good product and I run it on one of my three computers. If you install it on SP2, you must turn off the SP2 firewall in your security Center. If you wish my advice, for maximum protection, purchase yourself a hardware router from someone like Linksys that has a firewall built it. Then run the SP2 firewall and no Zone Alarm.

You tell me they are not on your computer? :scratch: I can not get in front of your computer to verify that. If you can't find them to delete them, I am not real sure what to do next. Here are a couple of things you can try.
You can use Killbox but you first need to locate them.

Since these items are part if the Alcan worm infection, you can also try this:
1. Please download Ewido Anti-Malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Install ewido anti-malware
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,

Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).
Do not do anything with these yet!
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.
4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.
5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

Sorry my post of 3:33 today became garbled.
The log in that post was obtained after I checked the 2 boxes in Resident and ran a SpyBot scan to see if Command Service had reappeared (which it had). I want to emphasise that this occurred whilst I was off-line (modem off) and immediately after I had done a SpyBot scan which came up clean.
Prior to activating TeaTimer I applied the First and Second fixes mentioned in your post yesterday 23:16.
I don't know what to attribute the reappearance of Command Service other than me reactivating TeaTimer.
I have since followed again the instructions in your post of yesterday 00:39 and am again getting SpyBot scans coming up clean but have not reactivated TeaTimer.
I am wondering whether it is worth uninstalling and reinstalling SpyBot and then turning on TeaTimer to see if the problem reoccurs?

Thanks for all your help with this problem and your advice generally.
Just wanted to let you know that, in the 24 hrs since I uninstalled/reinstalled SpyBot and checked the boxes in Resident for SDHelper and Tea Timer I have done numerous SpyBot scans and they have all come up clean.
I've gone on to the internet a number of times during that time but always using a limited account.
The uninstallation/reinstallation seems to have worked.

That's good to hear and the HJT log is still clean. I have seen this problem a few times in the past, where Spybot had to be uninstalled because TeaTimer would not allow a simple fix to be done.
