I installed Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 on my Windows XP Pro machine. When I try and run the application no interface comes up. The Windows Task Manager shows the process SpybotSD.exe is running... But nothing happens! I've tried doing everything in safe mode and I get the same behavior.

I've also tried uninstalling SpybotSD, including searching the registry and removing anything "spybot" related.

Somehow everytime I install and run spybot I get a process that starts but no application comes up at all..

Any ideas what could be going on here? Thanks..

Try renaming the default desktop icon to something else.

I'm having the same issue and I'm running XP Home Edition. I think it may be due to the entire fact that that computer is infected, but I've also tried booting into safe mode and running it with no luck. The little command prompt appears, but it never brings up the interface to allow me to run the scan. Just tried changing the name of the icon, although I don't see how that would help and it didn't, checked the Task Manager and it shows the process, but the interface just will not appear.

Hi,

I am experiencing the same issue as cruiserandmax. Yesterday, I received warnings in avast! about possible trojans. I moved them immediately to the chest and then my computer started running very slow and, eventually, internet windows began to open of various sizes that I never opened. So, here I am.

I have downloaded the SS&D installer three different times and installed it. Each time, it installs and the little icon show in the taskbar but I can never run a SS&D scan. I have tried renaming the desktop icon, renaming the install folder and the shortcut name with no success. I have also exited the Tea service and then tried to run it but that did not work either. I know its there because I can right click on something and have SS&D scan the one file and it shows the results. I have also tried this in normal and safe modes.

Here's where my situation differs though. I no longer have the folder options in Control Panel to view hidden files, nor do I have it in Windows Explorer anymore. Therefore, I cannot rename/run the hidden file that has been suggested. My desktop icon points to SpybotSD.exe but when I go into the Program Files folder, that file is nowhere to be found. The closest ones that show are SDFiles, SDMain and SDWinSec and none of those will start SS&D either.

Even other programs will not even start the installer such as Ad-Aware Free, HiJackThis, Malware Bytes, etc. The only one I got to work was a-squared FREE. It is also giving me a 'The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation' when I tried to open a file on my Windows XP CD. I am an administrator on my PC so something has really messed things up.

try to install Spybot S&D with an renamed installer, it is possible that the malware blocks a software by name. For instance rename the Spybot S&D installer exe to something like 123.scr.
Have you tried that already? I mean renaming the primary shortcut that executes Spybot to something else with a ".scr" extension?

Were you able to successfully install Spybot-SD? Can you at least download the installer? Are you able to access Spybot's homepage?
