Sunday night while I was looking at a google page my command prompt opened by itself and installed something. I ran Spybot and Avast. Spybot had a couple of hits so I fixed them. The system rebooted and then no desktop. I was getting errors about a missing file looking for winnet.dll. I got the file installed and then it finally let me log into windows. But there is no desktop. I can run some programs through task manager. It also did the same thing in Safe-mode. I was at an end of sanity. It took me hours to get this log and I hope someone can help me. All my files are still on system so I dont want to format. Please Help Me.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry about the late reply, we've been swamped here :(

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder:

* Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
* Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Next:

* Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
* Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
* Select 2 and hit Enter to delete the infected files.
* You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
* The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
* A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process.

The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt. Please post the contents of that text and a fresh HijackThis log into your next reply.

Thanks for a reply. I am so close tro just formatting. Here are the logs you asked for. To let you know also '"Safe mode" does the same thing, I have to ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager. Then I use New Task to browse HD and run some programs.

You had signs of multiple pests on there, but not all will show on a HijackThis log. Smitfraud was just one of them, but the tool should have taken care of that one.

I do see a sign also of the LOP pest. And then I think we ought to have you do a scan with Ewido Antimalware as ej.exe isn't showing up on this log but other searches on that file name indicate Ewido does detect it as a trojan.

1. Download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

* Install Ewido anti-malware.
* The program will now go to the main screen.

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

* On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
* Click on Start.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, close Ewido.
Dont run a scan yet

2. Do a *Scan only* with HijackThis and when it finishes checkmark this entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Pile eq] C:\DOCUME~1\Kevin\APPLIC~1\LOGDOE~1\peak free.exe

3. Reboot to safe mode and delete this folder:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Kevin\APPLICATION DATA\LOGDOE... <--The name is shortened here, it begins with those letters and may contain spaces, such as: Log Doe...

4. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.

* Click on Scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
* Let the program scan the machine.

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Remove, then put a check next to Perform action on all infections in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time.
Click OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Save the report to your Desktop.
Close Ewido.

5. Reboot back to normal mode. Post the log from the Ewido scan and fresh HijackThis log please.

That all looks ok now, except for your out of date Sun Java version (and they may be more than one installed on your PC)

your Sun Java is out of date and a security vulnerability

Please see this topic:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14738046

Important Note: Autoupdate of Sun Java does not uninstall previous (vulnerable) versions of the program.
Therefore all users are encouraged to please check in your Control Panel, under Add/Remove programs and uninstall any older versions of Sun Java.

Then get the latest version of Sun Java here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

or here (manual download):
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

And in the future, remember to remove older versions of Java when you automatically update to a newer version to avoid exploitation of older versions left on your system.
........................
And, I also need to know how are things looking on your end? Seeing any remaining problems?

Ok, Let's see what this tool says about the wininet.dll
Download this free tool called SmitRem and save the file to your desktop.

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1

Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name Smitrem.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

wininet.dll is missing!!
Bingo! something ate your wininet.dll. You need a copy that matches your current version and service pack installed (SP2).

Can you try uninstall/reinstall SP2? That should get it back

Thank you so much. I have me laptop back =).
I could not reinstall windows because I did not have disk. What I ended up doing was copying my wininet.dll file from c:/window/i386 and copy/paste to system32 folder. All works great now. Have ran multiple virus and spybot scans and it all comes back clean.

THANK YOU SO MUCH CALAMITY :crowned: :bigthumb: you ROCK!

Hmmmmmm. I thought that this SmitfraudFix tool was supposed to look in other locations for a clean copy and replace it. Your post and these logs tell me it didn't!

Thanks for the feedback - I'm going to have to check that out with the tool's author. If I had known that it didn't look for a clean copy elsewhere, I would have suggested just what you did!

Anyway, I'm glad to hear we have finally got this resolved :bigthumb:

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

"So, how did I get infected in the first place?" (by Tony Klein)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
