View Full Version : Trojan: On formatting bombarded with fake errors
Allright, my computer was full of crap, I'm not the only one using it, and after many stories of "oh, I had this pop up and clicked on it, whoopse" from my family, I decided to format. Now here's where the problem kicks in.
http://home.comcast.net/~society2/errors.jpg
No sooner do I finish installing windows (I did so with my network cable unplugged) than I start getting this. I can't recall if it was before or after I reconnected the cable that I started getting this, but it was at least before installing firefox, which was the first thing I did.
Making sure to NOT click anywhere near the damned things, I started screenshotting them and putting them into a jpg. Norton didn't pick it up either, and I'm worried about what's going on. (it also seems as though it was copying norton warnings and giving me new shit to click on)
Please help, thank you.
I'll post my log when I get home, I'm not at my home computer right now.
I'm back home, and here is my log.

Well, the good news your HijackThis log looks clean.
Those popups you are seeing are what is commonly referred to as Messenger Spam. It's explained here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330904
You can follow the directions in that link to turn off Windows Messenger service (not to be confused with MSN messenger)
You also need to get SP2 for XP
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx
