Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file and the uninstall list.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

MBAM found nothing and it is a very good scanner for finding virtumonde if it is there.

Review the information, make sure Spybot is totally up to date and immunized, then scan aagain and let me know the results.

I also suggest you update your antivirus program and scan the system, post those results for me as well.

The Spybot 1.6 ran cleanly and didn't report any virtumonde items, so did Spybot eliminate it? If so, would it have just been a matter of my having installed Spybot 1.6 to begin with? Would that have fixed the problem?

I remember your notes me to download Spybot 1.6, which I did, but I didn't run it until now because I thought I had to complete the other instructions first.

If this fixes my problem, then I will pay attention to the out of date programs. So, I need to keep them updated -- is that the trick?

Spybot can not remove this infection completely but I am not sure Spybot was up to date and fully immunized. Keep in mind when Spybot is scanning what you see on the bottom of the interface are the items in the database. It might appear Spybot has stopped, but because Vundo files are random there may be so many it appears the program has stopped. This is just my guess, I am not an expert with Spybot S&D, those folks reside here:

Just like the hackers find ways into the computer via the Windows Operating System and Microsoft keeps releasing critical updates, hackers also find ways to infect you via out of date programs and the companies are constantly updating to stop this from happening. If it can be updated, keep it up to date. That is why I posted the freeware program to help you do this, I have three computers and know how hard it is to keep them up to date.

I still suggest you scan with CA to make sure it is clean, but if all is well, here is information to help you keep it that way.

Now that I am able to run spybot 1.6 to completion (thanks), I tried one of my other three non-admin XP logins, and spybot 1.6 froze on virtumonde.dll again. This was my original symptom that something was wrong before I consulted the user forum. I have four userids, one of which is my administrator userid. The other three userids are standard non-admin userids. I generally do not use my admin userid for anything but installs, etc. My original problem with virtumonde started with my admin userid.

Now, how do I cleanup my non-admin userids?

The HJT log was done as administrator. Turns out two of the three non-admin userids ran cleanly with Spybot 1.6. The one userid that didn't, I just ran Malwarebytes and then Spybot 1.6. Could have been some kinda of oversight or coincidence -- or I did it before I got an update of 1.6 on that user.

So all seems well on my machine now. And I've updated the systray with PSI and read through some of the other material and will keep the links around for reference.

I'm going to install windows SP3 updates.
