I need a little help please. I'm pretty certain I caught some sort of malware. Here's the low down:

My Setup (annotated) from DXDiagnostic:

------------------
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 4/27/2006, 22:53:31
Machine name: DAGEESUZ
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: NVIDIA
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Page File: 192MB used, 2474MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode
Card name: RADEON X850 Series
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI RADEON X850 PRO AGP (0x4B4B)

Symptons include:

1. Occasional window popups informing me of virus vulnerabilities. Upon clicking the "X" box to close the window, I'm directed to a site advertising "Winantiviruspro 2006" and "Winantispyware 2006."
2. Slower than normal internet speed. Also slower than normal startup and shut down times.

What I have done so far:

1. Updated windows. Downloaded and installed two updates.
2. Updated my antivirus program (AVG free) and ran it. No viruses detected BUT last week AVG detected and deleted "Trojan horse Downloader.Agent.DID." I cleared out virus vault tonight.
3. Updated and ran Spybot S&D. Cleared around 20 items.
4. Restarted in Safe mode. Cleared out a few other items.
5. Restarted in normal mode and ran Hijack This.

Hijack this log is:

I'm going to keep this PC turned off until I can get some help. I dont want to make matters worse or get something new.

Thanks

Todd

Hi Todd and welcome to the forum. You are running HJT from E:\ and it must run from a drive to work correctly and to store logs and backups. If E:\ is a drive fine, if not move it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe.
You have the Vundo trojan and a few other questionable items I suggest you remove like this, you must have an updated download of the fix, delete any Vundofix you have onboard.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

Please download VundoFix v4.2.35 to the Desktop:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/
* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task
* You will receive a message saying VundoFix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens, click: Scan for Vundo
* Once it's done scanning, click: Remove Vundo
* A prompt asking if you want to remove the files appears, click: Yes
* Once you click yes, the Desktop goes blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, a prompt to shutdown the computer appears, click OK
* Turn the computer back on.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Navigate to these files or folders and delete the if there:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ >>> folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES\KONTIKI\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutr.dll >>> file

Restart the computer and post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HJT log along with your comments.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks pskelley. I'll complete your recommendations when I get home this afternoon.

Just so you know, HJT is on a regular hard drive. I have two hard drives on that box, a "C" and an "E". I run windows and other basic programs on C and I put games and other optional progs on E.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll let you know how it goes in a few hours.

Hello again pskelley and thanks for your time.

I completed your recommendations and was able to run vundoFix.exe. Here's the log from that program:

I then ran HJT and was able to remove 8 of the 10 items you recommended. The other 2 were not listed. I think those items were (I didn't write down which ones):

And finally, I was able to remove the folders:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\KONTIKI\

I could not find the final item you asked me to remove. It simply wasn't there:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutr.dll

OK that completes what you recommended. Since I've been on the internet, I haven't had any popups and IE seems to be running pretty quick. How are we looking?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Todd, thanks for returning your information and for the feedback, also great job following the directions:bigthumb: The two items you mentioned, I indicated they might not be there. The Vundo fix usually removes them, but once in a while they are left as a dead line and it saves a step if I check for them when I run HJT.
Vundofix also removed the file you could not find, that was just my double check.

Your HJT log looks clean of malware, so here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
