Hello there,

Im a bit of a novice in computing but I have a problem with system hang on start up. Having used spybot to check my start up programs I have found the following :

crypt32chain crypt32.dll
cryptnet cryptnet.dll
cscdll cscdll.dll
igfxcui igfxsrvc.dll
ScCertProp wlnotify.dll
Schedule wlnotify.dll
sclgntfy sclgntfy.dll
Senslogn WINotify.dll
termsrv wlnotify.dll
wlballoon wlnotify.dll

Please could somebody tell me if any of the above need removing? I also have other start up processes such as AVG and Zonealarm but my main concern is for those listed above.

Many thanks in advance, Jon

Hello Jon and welcome to the forum:) There are centain ways we do things I need to point out to you.

1) You have cut off the first four lines of the HJT log, so I can not tell if you are up to date with Service Packs or Critical Updates, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=425

2) You need to be aware the Pinned information is there to help you, I suggest you read it all, but you need to follow the instructions in this link:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

3) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is NOT a good thing. See this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206 Uninstall one and update, then do a complete system scan with the one you kept. If something is located that can not be deleted, post the complete name and pathway of that item for me to view.

4) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Once you complete the above instructions, then do this:

Looks like you have ewido onboard:
O23 - Service: ewido security suite control - ewido networks - C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe
Open the program and choose update, allow time for it to finish. Now click scanner then complete system scan. Allow ewido to remove anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Save that scan report, I must see it.
Post the ewido scan results along with a new HJT log in this same topic and once I have a look at the two logs, I will respond with instructions as soon as possible after that.

Thanks...pskelley

Hello PSKelly, thanks for your reply. Please find below the HJT log in full, the Ewido log saved after a full system scan (nothing found though).

I have since moved HJT from my desktop to a folder on my C drive as required. Just to let you know - the main anti-virus program I have installed on my PC is AVG. My computer originally came with Norton which I thought I had uninstalled around 12 months ago. However, on viewing my add/remove log there is an entry 'Norton WMI Update' which I cannot uninstall as it comes back saying there is a process still requiring that software. Please advise!

Many thanks again, Jon

OK Jon, thanks for responding on a timely basis, here is what I see:

I have since moved HJT from my desktop to a folder on my C drive as required.
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exeDid you reboot after moving it, as you can see in the newest HJT log it is still on the Desktop. Let me say I am asking this for your safety, I have seen backups get deleted when they are on the Desktop, especially loose with no folder.

Just to let you know - the main anti-virus program I have installed on my PC is AVG. You may have to contact Norton for instructions. You should have read both the Symantec and Microsoft instuctions for this. I find it impossible to troubleshoot with these conflictions going on, and you will never know if that is what is causing your issues. I will say that you need to stop Symantec/Norton from running in your Services

O23 - Service: Symantec Network Proxy (ccProxy) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Password Validation (ccPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccPwdSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
O23 - Service: SAVScan - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe
_________________________________________________________
Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to all Symantec services and right click on them.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
__________________________________________________________
Once you have stopped them from running you may then be able to uninstall in Add Remove programs. I say may, because Norton can be a real pain to uninstall, which is why I suggested you contact Symantec for their detailed instructions for uninstalling the software you have.

I apologize, in all of the changes I did not notice your Java progam is out of date: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\npjpi142_03.dll This will get you infected fast. You can find instructions here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2559

Your original compaint:

Im a bit of a novice in computing but I have a problem with system hang on start up.With the two av's and that can cause a real variety of issues, it will be next to impossible to troubleshoot a startup issue, which is rarely caused by malware. If we can ever clean you up, then if that issues still exists, I will have some suggestions.

For now I am going to suggest you remove all of the Hp redirect clutter. It looks like you are using either: http://www.msn.com/
or http://uk.yahoo.com/ as your HomePage. Just set which ever one you wish:
Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > General Tab to set your HomePage.

WinPatrol will block the change, turn it off until you are done. Right click the running icon, and exit.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log. I will be able to gauge your progress from it. If you have questions, please ask them and I will do my best to answer.

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil,

Please view my most recent HJT log.

Just to let you know, having disabled all Symantec processes it seems to have resolved the system hang problem.

Ive updated my java, moved my HJT from the desktop (i think!), hopefully sorted out my homepage on Explorer and checked all the boxes and fixed as per your previous instructions.

However, another problem has appeared, albeit only a minor one. Since making the changes and rebooting, the system has gone to 'classic' mode. Ive tried right clicking on the taskbar to adjust the appearance and this hasnt worked. Ive also tried the 'display' file in the control panel and under 'appearance' it only gives me the option of classic style. Any ideas??

Thanks again for all your help, Jon

Hi Jon. Thanks for the feedback, it never ceases to amaze me the issues that can be caused by have two AV's running. I personally think every AV download should include the warning for folks about removing anything there before installing a new one, but they do not. Sounds like we are getting close, let me look at the log then I will see what I can find about the the "system has gone to 'classic' mode", I know I have seen that before.

Only thing I want to mention is that I see Zone Alarm in the log. Since it is running, you want to make sure the SP2 firewall in your Security Center is turned off. Possible conflictions there also. The HJT log really looks good, you did a great job:bigthumb: and should reach back and pat yourself on the back. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

I am not sure which will help you, so I will give you what I have:

1) 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults

2) Right-click on the desktop
Click on the Properties item
When the Properties dialog comes up click on the Web tab
If Show Web content on my Active Desktop is checked then click on the page in the box below and click the Delete button
Uncheck the checkbox in front of Show Web content on my Active Desktop
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button

3) It could be possible, after reboot that the system is using the windows classic theme again.
To restore this and set it back to XP-theme, rightclick on your desktop > properties > tab Appearances and choose Windows XP style again under windows and buttons.
Click apply and OK.

Here is the Google if you want to look around: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=windows+XP+stuck+in+classic+mode

Let me know is that helps

Thanks...Phil

Phil....

My system is now running like new! Just to let you know about the 'stuck in classic' problem. It was resolved by running the 'themes' process. I had previously disabled it but I ran it, rebooted and on the new start up, XP theme was back.

The problem with the system hand has now been resolved also.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help during the last few days. It was looking like a system recovery until you came up with all the answers. The way the forum is run is excellent and I much appreciated the way you simplified what I needed to do, knowing that my computer knowledge is somewhat lacking! I have also completed the system restore process as per your last message and will be looking at the links provided to help me keep my computer safe and secure.

All your help is greatly appreciated, thanks again, Jon
