Hello kind volunteers,

Last night my PC (running XP) went berserk with popups and Spy Sweeper informed me that numerous things were trying to install themselves. I kept closing windows and selecting "block installation" or "do not allow" whenever Spy Sweeper gave me the option, but eventually, all of the icons on my desktop as well as my taskbar disappeared, leaving only my wallpaper.

Rebooting yielded nothing - my icons and taskbar loaded initially but disappear within a few seconds, and right-clicking on my desktop seems to be disabled. Now the only way I can open anything is through Task Manager.

In addition to Spy Sweeper, I have CCleaner, Spybot, and Revo uninstaller on my computer from previous fiascoes and opened them through task manager to scan my drives. They found the following malware items that I can supposedly delete but that I notice are back upon rebooting:

Virtumonde
ZenoSearchAssistant
Smitfraud-C.CoreService

I am at a loss for what to do - I have already tried restoring but to no avail. Unfortunately I'm running into the same problem when I boot in safe mode, the icons and taskbar load at first but then disappear shortly after. I've read many of the other threads regarding these items and thought it was best to ask for help before I inadvertently screw this up any worse. CCleaner and Spybot can both access a list of startup items and have the option to disable them if that helps.

To make matters worse, unfortunately I don't think my computer is capable of connecting to the internet, but I have a flash drive and internet access on another computer and am willing to try anything at this point. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!
Stuart

Hi

I think you missed
BEFORE you POST
(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) ;)

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

Hello! Thank you so much for your response. My apologies for missing that I should start with the HJT log, I read that and didn't get that was something you requested from everyone.

For whatever reason my computer wouldn't open notepad when I clicked "save log," so I obtained this by clicking "Do a system scan and save a logfile" - I hope this isn't a problem. Here it is:

Hi

We need to rename HijackThis next. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder and rename HijackThis.exe file -> whatever.exe. Post a fresh hjt log after renaming is done. :)

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hello again,

As per your instructions I disabled SpySweeper's realtime protection and turned off all shields (only the "safe mode" sweeper would open, but I could still access all these options, I hope that isn't a problem). I next used a flash drive to download Combofix from a different computer and copy it onto my desktop. From there I installed the Recovery Console according to the instructions you provided. Combofix said it detected the presence of rootkit activity and needed to reboot the machine, which it did, after which it went through a long process of deleting files and folders and "completing stages." After that it rebooted my computer again and returned the log file attached here.

I also ran HJT again, but I reinstalled it from my flash drive - please let me know if this is a problem and I need to rename it to "whatever.exe" again before scanning, I will gladly do so. My desktop now appears to be stable; I have my icons and taskbar back :D:

Here is my ComboFix log:

Hi

The situation is going to better direction but there's still work left :)

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent

I'd like you to read the this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Delete these folders afterwards:

c:\documents and settings\User\Application Data\BitTorrent
c:\Program Files\BitTorrent

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:

Hello again!

I have read and understand your policy on P2P file-sharing programs and have followed your instructions to remove BitTorrent and those two associated folders. After that I copied-and-pasted the quoted text you provided into notepad, saved it as CFScript, and dragged it onto the Combofix icon. Combofix then proceeded to delete files and "complete stages," and after that rebooted my computer (the log is posted below). I did NOT have to open task manager to close any of the processes you mentioned.

After the reboot I deleted my old version of Adobe Reader and downloaded the new one you recommended, but i have not installed it yet. I then followed your steps to delete the old version of Java, reboot, and install the new one. I followed your instructions to download and run ATF cleaner and then ran an online scan with Kaspersky (see log below). After all this, I ran HJT and have also provided its log below. In general my system seems much more stable now - my icons and taskbar no longer blink out of existence and reload every few minutes, and the Internet Explorer popups I was experiencing after running Combofix the first time have also stopped. I can't thank you enough!

Anyway, here is my ComboFix log:

Hi

You did it right :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

recommended Firefox addons

Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/installation) and NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/722)

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hello again - I think everything seems to be functioning great! I'm no longer experiencing ad popups and my desktop is stable. I can't thank you enough!

I deleted my old restore points as you instructed and uninstalled Combofix. I then updated to Internet Explorer 7 and used the Windows Update website to download all the indicated critical updates for both Windows (including XP Service Pack 3) and Microsoft Office (Including Office 2003 Service Pack 3). I followed your instructions for adjusting the settings of Internet Explorer and made sure Windows automatic updates were on. I actually wasn't aware that updating regularly was important for security purposes, so thank you for all your tips and advice!

I just have one more question - I noticed when I ran the Kaspersky online scan that 12 infected items were identified (they are listed in the log file in my previous post). Did Kaspersky delete these files? If not, can I do so myself? Also, for regular maintenance I scan my system about once a month with CCleaner to delete old cookies and unnecessary files. Do you recommend against this, or have any suggestions other than updating regularly and keeping my antivirus and antispyware software up-to-date?

One last thing - I use Symantec Antivirus, and I don't think it runs unless I open the program (i.e., I don't think it is constantly on the lookout for threats). Is this something I can change? If so, should I?

Thank you so much again for all your help!

I'm sorry, I had one more question that I forgot to include in my last post - in your instructions you had me disable Spy Sweeper's real-time protection. Is this something I should enable now that my computer is ok?

Thanks again!

Hi

Those were in ComboFix quarantine folder and should be gone when ComboFix was uninstalled. You may use CCleaner to clean temporary items and cookies occasionally.

You may re-enable it now if you want :)
