View Full Version : Possible trojan infection.
Hello.
I seem to have some sort of trojan or malware infection.
The computer is running very slow and I suspect that's because of unwanted items hogging up memory/resources.
I did a scan with MBAM and it showed four registry entries for Vundo trojan, which I removed; but it appears that every time I reboot these registry entries are reinstated - so I suspect the trojan is still lurking.
I looked up most of my running processes at http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/ and most of them are fine but some of them can have dual purposes. Such as spoolsv.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe, winlogon.exe, csrss.exe, and smss.exe.
Lastly, after reading through the HJT log, two of the entries seem suspicious (I Googled their names). They are mgxfebsq and dtseqrxk.

While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your personal data before starting any clean up procedure.
Read this please as P2P ( File Sharing Programs ) have become the latest avenue of attack by malware writers.
We have noticed that many people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.
Because of this, we changed our malware forum's policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programs, volunteer analysts will refuse their help.
We do not ask you to do this without reason.
P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.
Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Logs looking good malwarewise, but a few things I want to point out to you.
You have AVG Antivirus installed, I am also looking at Symantec running as a service, did you try uninstalling Symantec at one time??
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
Your Windows Operating System is out of date, you need to install Service Pack 3 ( SP3). You can do that by opening up Internet Explorer and going to Tools> Windows Update and download any critical updates . You may have to download a few before SP3 and there are also more after SP3.

Yes I believe I did.
There's also some other services loaded that I don't believe I need, like aawservice.exe.
The reason I haven't installed SP3 is because I've read about numerous people having trouble with their computers after having installed it, so I'm reluctant to install it.
I'll also install the newest Java.
And the computer takes over 10mins to boot and still seems a bit slow, but maybe that's a result of all the running processes.

There where some issues with SP3 when it first came out but they have been all cleared up. We installed it on over 90 computers where I work about two months ago and not one issue.. I have also installed it on my friends and families computers with no issue either. It will make your system a lot more secure.
I suspect that you did a botched job on uninstalling Symantec and this may be the problem with your start up. Symantec has a removal tool that you can download and run for free that will completely uninstall there product.

Post back and let me know how things are running after you run the Norton Removal tool. If you still have issues after running it I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with problems like that.
It still takes a while to bootup,
and I get this error mesage,`? partizan program not found, skipping autocheck'.
Then it proceeds to load Windows.
Anyway I believe why the computer is running slow is due to too many processes taking up memory.

If I remove this aawservice.exe by `fixing it' in HJT - does that just remove it from being a running process? So that when I run Ad-Aware it would still work as normal? Or does it delete the file?
And would fixing `avgtray.exe' stop it from being run when the computer reboots?
(Even after choosing to exit AVG it still has running processes taking 60MB of memory. I only have 488MB so would like to only use AVG when I want to, instead of automatically chewing resources. I can't even stop these processes in Task Manager.)

You can disable Ad Watch this way, do not remove it with HJT
To Disable AdWatch
Open Ad-Aware SE Personal
Go to the AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options.

No I've never heard of that.
It's not a program that I've installed; it sometimes shows the error message before Windows loads.
(And I think it's related to chkdsk or something similar.)
You can go to Start > Run and type in chkdsk > OK and let it run, maybe you have errors on your drive. I may be off on this but really not sure what that error is.
Run Malwarebytes and lets make sure we didn't miss anything
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Do this first...Important
Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect
Please do not proceed until the TeaTimer is disabled

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.

Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.

How are things running now????
Hi.
(Sorry for not replying sooner but I got a network timeout response when trying to login.)
Anyway when I go to turn off the system restore it says that in order to do so it will delete all previous restore points, which I'm not sure is so wise.
Because the computer is still running slower than it used to and now it won't shut down.
Is it possible for me to restore from a previous point, say a month prior to my current problems?

We had a network problem last night but it was fixed.
If you use System Restore to restore your system to a month ago, everything we removed is backed up in that program and you will just reinfect yourself. Its best to flush it all out and CREATE A NEW RESTORE POINT.

You have TWO ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS , This is not recommended as they will use a huge amount of System Resources and some times conflict with one another. Its best to have just one good one, keep it updated and run a scan once a week or so. Its your call but you need to uninstall one via the Add Remove Programs, do that and post back and let me know if it made a difference.

I uninstalled both AV programs a few days ago but still no noticeable improvements.
If it's possible for me to use a previous restore point I don't mind removing the infections we've already discussed.

You could have some sort of software or hardware conflict, but we don't do that on this forum. Did this happen about the time you got infected? Or has this been going on for some time?? Do you remember installing any new software before this happened, or a new piece of hardware like a printer or scanner ??
Your call to run System Restore, if you do, post back with a new HJT log and lets see if anything came back , also let me know if it fixed the problem
I haven't installed any new hardware.
I may have installed one or two new programs.
What exactly will a system restore actually restore; registry settings?
And how do I do a system restore should I wish to try it?
One other thing. If I restore previous registry settings, will I have to re-install any new programs that were installed after the restore date?

Nothing bad in that log except the items in your system restore..
It basically restores your system to the date you choose, any hardware installed after the restore point may not work.
Why don't your post in one of these forums, PcPitStop will do a free scan of your system pointing out any errors, it will save a report that a tech in one of the windows forums may want to see. They can advise you better as we do not get involved in windows problems, we just do malware removal.
