Problem:
Pop-ups coming up, even when internet is not running.
Slow.
Could only start stably in Safemode and changing the System Config settings to Diagnostic Setup, however was able to recently start up under normal start up setting and collected Hijackthis file with all drivers and services running.

Ran AVG Anti-virus
Found several viruses.

Ran Ad-Aware
Found Virtumonde.

Hi

Please see
BEFORE you POST
(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) and its post #5:

Note:
When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.

The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department, nor can we anticipate alterations or configurations that may have been made to a business machine, or how it will interact with the tools commonly used in the removal of malware.

More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.

To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.

Thanks for your understanding.

Thank you for your response. I read the "Before You Post" sticky, but the computer is no longer a work-related computer. It was my father's computer at his former place of work, but is most certainly no longer related to Endomatrix anymore. I should have cleared that up in my original post.

A friend has received help from the Malware forums before and was very satisfied when the advice led to a fixed computer.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks again.

Ok. Thanks for clearing things up :)

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thanks for the quick response. I am having a couple of issues with the ComboFix tool. First, I read the pages on BleepingComputer and Windows to download the Recovery Console. I have Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002 SP3- so I tried both Pro SP2 and Home SP2, but when I drag to ComboFix on the desktop nothing happens. Is there a different file from Windows for Tablet instead of Pro or Home?

To clarify, my computer can only be run in Safe Mode, which may or may not be affecting the situation. I am downloading files on another computer and transferring them to the infected laptop via a flash drive.

In summary, the Windows Recovery Console will not load, and attempts to run ComboFix without it lead to the same inaction. I checked the Task Manager and combofix.exe is there, with a mem usage of only 2,072k and no CPU action at all.

If I start outside of Safe Mode, it will only last for about 10 seconds before freezing up.

Appreciate any further help!

Hi

Please rename ComboFix.exe -> ComboFxx.exe and try running ComboFix again. ComboFix should ask if you want to install recovery console and then get it automatically if connection is working. If you can't install recovery console please try run ComboFix without RC.

Changed the file name and it worked great.

Here are the combofix and new hijackthis logs:

It rebooted under the guidance of combofix into Normal mode, and appears to be operating correctly so far. I'll wait for any further advice before I do anything else, but have looked at the list of programs to help keep my computer safe on the sticky and plan on doing all of those.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Tor
Azureus
FrostWire

I'd like you to read the this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Delete these folders afterwards:

c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\tor
c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\Azureus
c:\program files\Azureus
c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\FrostWire
c:\program files\FrostWire

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
if not set by yourself -> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = ftp=localhost:8118;http=localhost:8118;https=localhost:8118;socks=localhost:9050
if not set by yourself -> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;127.0.0.1

Close browsers and fix checked.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).

Post back its report, a fresh hjt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

PS. What antivirus program are you using? Log shows signs of both AVG and Symantec (Norton) protection. Decide which one to keep and uninstall other one.

Thanks again for sticking with me on this.

I removed the P2P software as directed, and ran HJT to remove the R0 and R1 entries as directed. Throughout the entire fix process I have had the wireless switch off and the LAN disconnected since I didn't know if I was still infected. When I tried to connect to get the Java update (and to do the online virus scan), my Network Connections folder was empty. Should it be? A message pops up regarding no Network Adapters. Until now I have been downloading files on another computer and transferring back and forth via a flash drive, but I can't seem to get the Java or the online virus scan onto the drive.

Should the internet be inaccessible at this point? Do you need a new log of any sort?

Hi

Please check your device manager. Any exclamation marks (on yellow background) there?

To open device manager:
* Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
* Double click on System
* Click on the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties page
* Click on Device Manager

Kurt6000

That was the first thing I checked. Strangely, the device manager field is blank too- nothing is there at all. Could settings in msconfig be wrong? I checked there next but did not see anything out of the ordinary, or simply could not tell if there was.

Never seen this lack of control over system devices before- any thoughts? It is definitely running without freezing or shutting down now however.

Locate if present the following file & delete it:

C:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Restart the computer
Just before the OS loading screen starts hit F8 as if going to safe mode.
From the advanced boot menu choose "enable boot logging" then hit enter.
Post the following file:

C:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Will do- I'll be at the computer again in about two hours.

Also, I found this on microsoft troubleshooting- could this be of any help? I won't do anything until told.

Hi

Yes, that could be a key to your problem. Before trying it's better get a backup of your registry.

Download ERUNT (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Registry-Tweak/Erunt-g.shtml)
Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program.

In the box that opens ONLY choose
System registry.

Then click OK.

Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

OK. I will transfer Erunt over and run it, then try the Microsoft steps.

There are still no drivers or network connections available. Besides that, and the desktop showing the Active Desktop Recovery screen instead of the normal background, there are no problems.

Hi

Please follow instructions by Microsoft given here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953979).

and the desktop showing the Active Desktop Recovery screen instead of the normal background
Is this (http://ledzius.net/anthony/pictures/active_desktop_recovery.jpg) the screen you see? If so, have you tried by following instructions mentioned there?

Kurt6000
2008-12-10, 20:18
Thanks. Still nothing in Network Connections or Device Manager. Have not made any other changes, but took a look at Services in Administrative Tools and noticed many are Disabled, including Plug & Play and others. Any that need to be Enabled and Started to retrieve the Network Adapters?

Also, I fixed the Desktop background by enabling Desktop Icons, which refreshed the background.

Also, the error message in Network Connections is no longer there, so the hotfix (or my registry edits) appears to have worked for that at least.

Hi

Please download the Registry Search tool by clicking on the
hard drive
icon halfway down this page:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Save it to the desktop and run it. If you get an alert from your antivirus about scripting, choose to allow the script to run. Search for $%&'()*+ and click OK. Post the logfile from the tool here for me.

Then generate a HijackThis Startup list:

1. Open HijackThis by double-clicking the desktop shortcut or HijackThis.exe
2. Click on Open the Misc Tools Section
3. Make sure that both boxes to the right of
Generate StartupList Log
are checked:

* List also minor sections (Full)
* List empty sections (Complete)

4. Click Generate StartupListLog
5. Click Yes at the prompt.
6. A Notepad window will open with the contents of the HijackThis Startup list displayed

The Registry scan showed no results after scanning for 32 seconds. I must have got them all when I did that manually a couple of steps ago (which took quite a while).

Here is the rather long HJT startuplist:

Hi

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file regExport.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.

@echo off
regedit /e c:\regExportKey1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies"
regedit /e c:\regExportKey2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies"
type c:\regExportKey1.txt > c:\regExport.txt
type c:\regExportKey2.txt > c:\regExport.txt

Double-click on regExport.bat file to execute it. You should end up with c:\regExport.txt file. Post it as an attachment, please (archive into a zip file if too big).

Hi

Looks like it might be a good idea to uninstall service pack 3 to see if it helps to get device manager back. If that doesn't have any effect I suggest you ask at a forum like http://forums.techguy.org or http://forums.pcpitstop.com which both have areas for non malware problems too :)

Kurt6000
2008-12-12, 19:50
Do you think Enabling Plug and Play in the Services tab would be a good idea or no? Googling the issue seems to show that as a popular option- I can try those other forums as well though. Should I come back when it is fixed so we can continue with Java and online scan?

Also, you mentioned earlier choosing between NAV and AVG. I have outdated NAV at the moment, and got the AVG to run in Safe Mode when it went down. Thoughts on which one I should keep that will work best with the list of programs suggested in the sticky on this forum?

Thanks!

Hi

You could try enabling that plug and play service. If it doesn't work then please ask at one of those forums I showed you (unless you try uninstalling service pack 3 first :)). We can continue with your case then.

From those two I'd choose AVG. However, if I could choose some other free solution then it would be Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) or Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Switched the startup type on it to "Automatic" and then "Started" it. Device Manager is now up- exclamation points next to "Deterministic Networks WAN Virtual miniport", "Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport", and "WAN Miniport (IP) - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport".

The device status for each of those claims, "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)."

Blade81
2008-12-12, 20:19
Good to hear that case got a bit more light into it :)

You have to install drivers for those. Have you tried installation option for each one given in device manager?

Kurt6000
2008-12-12, 20:30
I was able to fix "Deterministic Networks WAN Virtual miniport" by clicking "Update Driver," but no such luck for "Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport", and "WAN Miniport (IP) - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport".

Are there other settings I should change or can I get the drivers online? The Update Driver and Roll Back Driver options do nothing.

Thanks for sticking with me on this one even though it's not technically malware.

Update:

Got the drivers from Intel to replace those (from http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/CS-006103.htm).

No more errors on Device Manager but still no Network Connections.

Hi

Please see if this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826) article describes same kind of issues like you're having.

Kurt6000
2008-12-12, 22:58
Success! Was following several of those steps during the last hour or so- I believe it was Method 4 of the Advanced Troubleshooting options (resetting the network connections in the registry by deleting the config entry) that did it. This is the first post from the computer on the forum, thanks so much.

OK, back on track.

I'll follow the Java instructions and then the online scan.

I removed the old Java versions and got the latest version, and ran ATF-Cleaner with all options selected.

I'd like to operate as safely as possible, so do you prefer Avast or AntiVir over AVG? Is it safe to uninstall NAV and AVG if they are quarantining (as it seems they are from the Kaspersky log)?

Hi

Both Antivir and Avast do good job so it's your choice :santa:

Let's remove those quarantined Norton items. Those other quarantined ones will be removed when ComboFix is uninstalled (we'll do it a bit later).

Delete items in C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder. After that you may uninstall old antivirus program(s) and then install one of those two options.

Is that Acrobat 6 or Acrobat Reader/Adobe Reader installed there in your system? If it's Reader then Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close browsers and fix checked.

Reboot and post a fresh hjt log after done all above (including the antivirus change)

-Deleted items in NAV Quarantine folder.
-Removed Norton (think I got it all, had to get Norton Remover from Symantec to complete it).
-Removed AVG
-Removed all Adobe/Acrobat
-Added Avast
-Added Foxit
-Removed both HJT entries (about:blank was my action, but I removed it for now)
-Turned off Windows Firewall (and in Services)
-Added Online Armor
-Added SpywareBlaster
-Made sure Spybot SD was updated and operating
-Ran Jason Levine's Browser Tests (almost all passed)

What's next?

Here's the new HJT log:

Hi

Privacy policy of MarketBrowser (http://www.systemlookup.com/O9/162-MarketBrowser.html) is dubious. You might want to uninstall it.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix (I assume you have ComboFix.exe on your desktop):

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

-Uninstalled MarketBrowser
-Followed the System Restore steps
-Uninstalled ComboFix
-Had already changed IE settings
-Installed the MVPS hosts file
-Installed HostsMan from abelhadigital.com

Also, using PeerGuardian2 and Privoxy, so feel confident with the browsing safety. Is the combination of security I'm using solid?
-Spybot (with SDHelper and TeaTimer activated)
-AdAware (passive only)
-Online Armor
-SpywareBlaster
-Security Task Manager (passive only)
-Avast (On-Access Scanner activated)

I also ran the Secunia Online Software Inspector and updated Skype and Flash as recommended there.

Everything appears to be running smoothly. I may remove the Hosts file and HostsMan if I notice further slowing, but for now, everything is running much better.

Blade81, thank you very much for the help. I feel much more secure with my computer now, and have gained knowledge about the system as well. I'll be sure to check back in if something arises, but am confident that I am operating safely.

Thanks again!
