View Full Version : Virtumond etc. Infection

I am working with an infected laptop owned by my son-in-law, who admittedly failed to keep things up to date. Spybot has reported the following problems, which come right back, even before connection to the net. Virtumonde; Virtumonde.dll; Virtumonde.sci; and Win32.tdss.rtk among others.
I am able to keep the wireless network connection off while I work on it, but that hasn't helped much. I have included the Hijackthis log below. The OS is XP Sp2 (I have Sp3 on a thumb drive ready to load, but wanted to wait for a recommendation on when to do so.)
I have read the guidlines and the disclaimers, and fully aggree with all of them, and will comply completely!
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
John

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
c:\Downloads\utorrent.exe
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Downloads\\utorrent.exe"=-
Save this as "CFScript"
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
After that:
Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select ''Run as administrator'' to perform this scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Thank you one last time, Shaba!
I am writing this reply on the formerly infected machine, which has been working trouble-free since your last instructions were completed. All protection software is up to date, as is the OS.
You and the other volunteers on this site, as well as those who contributed code at the various other sites we used to clean up this mess must be commended and thanked.
Others reading this should follow my lead and contribute to these sites for the great work they do for us! It's unfortunate that we have to deal with these issues, but thanks again for the excellent support and the hard work!
John
Great :)
