View Full Version : Smitfraud-C, and virtumonde (.generic, .prx)

My daughter clicked on a link sent through msn two days ago () and our computer is now overrun with this virus. AVG scans were only picking up the occasional fake alert warning but since I downloaded spybot it has started recognising some trojans . I keep getting windows defender alerts that there is a trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!Y (sometimes there are multiple virus names in the one pop up). I'm reluctant to touch these due to the fake warning alerts found in AVG.

Spybot is returning Smitfraud-C, Vitumonde, vitumonde.generic, virtumonde.prx that it says are fixed but are still there. Various tracking cookies are also found.

Really appreciate this service, thanks!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

A couple of things first, don't own Vista so I can only promise to do my best and I do use MSN Messenger and have for years and it is not the program that is at fault, but clicking on infected links or files. Anyone who uses unsafe online habits could have this problem, including the daughter. Let's see if we can get combofix to run, make sure you run any tools as administrator.

1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

2) No Recovery Console for windows Vista.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi Phil,
I really appreciate your help. I hope this worked properly because I thought the AVG resident shield was turned off but it kept giving alerts to the combofix scan. I chose to ignore the warnings, hope that is correct.

I chose to ignore the warnings, hope that is correct.
That is correct

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 8.1.3 <<< out of date and being exploited, see this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10081618-83.html?tag=nl.e433
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Both out of date, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
http://searchengineland.com/microsoft-does-msn-toolbar-distribution-deal-with-java-15413.php

LimeWire 4.16.6 <<< uninstall
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.18) <<< I suggest the newest version is more secure.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

I see you have been using a USB or Flash Drive, are you positive that media is not infected?

1) Run DISK CLEANUP: ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEANUP

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\System32\tuvULDvS.dll
c:\windows\System32\qoMfefdc.dll
c:\windows\System32\khfDuRKE.dll

Folder::
c:\users\Alison\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM, answers to any questions, and a new HJT log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

How is the computer running now?
Thanks

Hi Phil!

I'm having so much fun cleaning this thing out!! He he..

I see you have been using a USB or Flash Drive, are you positive that media is not infected?

>> My AVG is usually pretty good with picking up any viruses but no, I'm not positive that its not infected. How would I check that?

How is the computer running now?

>> A new threat was detected by AVG during the scan and removed. Apart from that, I'm posting this reply immediately after carrying out the instructions so I'm not really sure. Malwarebytes removed 2 infections though so hopefully all will be good.

Here are the logs:

I'm not positive that its not infected.
DO NOT use it until you are sure. What exactly do you have so I know how to proceed?

A new threat was detected by AVG during the scan and removed.
I need to know what that was? May be AVG is seeing something quarantined already or in infected System Restore files (Windows protected) that still need to be cleaned.

As far as I can see from here, all looks good but I am not in front of the computer. I need the information about the removable media and some feedback about performance before I can move forward.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

The computer is going really well so far, its been on all night and I have not had any pop ups at all!!! The virus found during malwarebytes scan was:

Trojan horse fake alert.DH
C:\Users\Alison\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\3EIM4DDF\A9installer_880807[1].exe

I also ran an AVG scan later in the evening and nothing was found so that is promising. Seems like it may be cleared.

The USB is a Sony "microvault"
I'm not sure what else to tell you about it without being able to open up the software on it, sorry. There were no viruses on it before this infection however, I had to add a file to it for use during the infection so I guess its possible it may be infected now?

Cheers,

Alison

http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Microvault/

That is a USB flash drive, let's do this:

Download this removal tool to your desktop:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe
If you have any flashdrives being used previously, since this is a flashdrive infection, insert your flashdrive as well, because above tool will disinfect it as well.
Then doubleclick the Flash_Disinfector.exe to run the tool.
Your desktop and icons will disappear afterwards. This is normal.
When the tool has finished, reboot your computer.

The other item can be deleted from the AVG 8 Virus Vault.
Here is some good AVG info in case I did not provide it earlier:
FAQ: http://www.avg.com/faq
AVG Free Forum: http://freeforum.avg.com/

If all goes well with those instructions, let's wrapup like this:

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

Update the AVG 8 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Hi Phil,

I'm sorry to be a pain but I can't get this flash disinfector tool you recommended from http://www.techsupportforum.com/sect...isinfector.exe to work. It doesn't seem to do anything when I choose the RUN option. Any ideas?

Don't try to use the link you posted, use the one I posted. When you click it do not choose "Run" choose "Save". You might also RIGHT click the link and choose "Save target as". Save it to the DESKTOP.

Now insert the flashdrive into a working port, then doubleclick the Flash_Disinfector.exe to run the tool. Reboot the computer when finished.

Thanks

"Don't try to use the link you posted, use the one I posted"

>> That is the link you posted, I copy/pasted it from your post. Is it wrong? I have saved this Flash_Disinfector.exe to the desktop but when I double click it a dialogue box appears saying the publisher cannot be verified and asking me to "run" or "cancel". When I choose run, nothing happens.

Cheers,
Alison

Don't know what to say, I use the tool when I have this situation and it always works. You may want to think about tossing that item.
