I cannot remove the following from my computer:
Virtumonde.generic
Virtumonde
Smitfraud-C.CoreService
Smitfraud-C

I found the following using SpyBot.

Can anyone help? I'm desperate, I've had these on my computer for 6 days now and can't go online without crazy pop ups.

Here's what I've tried:
Smitfraud Fix

I've read forums where people have advised after seeing the person's ComboFix and HijackThis logs and really am hoping someone can do the same for me. Posted below are my ComboFix and HijackThis logs. I'll be so grateful for any help. Thanks in advance!

I've also posted for help here: http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/776644-virtumonde-generic-virtumonde-smitfraud-c.html#post6317686

"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Posters who start topics at multiple sites for their PC problem waste valuable volunteer resources, so please don't. Our analysts assist people at several forums.

The Waiting Room: Post here if waiting for help longer than four days (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=37)

Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806 )

Hi

First of all please post to your topic at TechGuy and let them know that they can close your topic there.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitComet
Shareaza

I'd like you to read the this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Delete these folders afterwards:

C:\Program Files\Shareaza Applications
C:\Program Files\BitComet

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Delete your old ComboFix.exe file and download fresh version to your desktop from one of these links:
***Link 1**** (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
***Link 2**** (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
***Link 3**** (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

Run ComboFix and post back its report & a fresh hjt log.

Sorry, I haven't responded, I thought I'd get an email notification when I got a post. I just posted at TechGuy that they can close the post. I'm at work, but will get the P2P uninstalled and will post fresh logs tonight.

Thank you very much!

Thanks for your help! I've removed the P2P and updated the ComboFix and HijackThis logs.

Hi

It's not recommended have multiple antivirus programs running in same system. Decide between McAfee and Norton which one you want keep.

Looks like there's still signs of P2P, so...

Delete these folders afterwards:

c:\documents and settings\TEST\Application Data\Shareaza
c:\program files\BitComet

Empty Recycle Bin.

After that:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Driver::
isapnpp

File::
c:\windows\system32\bawkfqwr.ini
c:\windows\system32\g6.exe

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Note: Uncheck MSN toolbar option if you don't want to install it.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).

Post back its report, a fresh hjt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

I got as far as getting Kaspersky Online Scanner to run. It was kind of slow so I went to bed and checked in the morning. When I tried to click "Save Report As" the button wouldn't highlight in order for me to click. I ended up closing it and running Kaspersky Online Scanner again, it was quicker the second time around but I ran into the same problem for saving the report.

I'll try again tonight when I get home from work to see if it will let me save it. Do you think I should just download the free trial?

Thanks!

Hi

Did Kaspersky report any bad findings? If not then it may not let to save the results.

If Kaspersky did find something but still don't let to save the report then you could try ESET Online Scanner:

* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checkmarked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with other requested logs.

I deleted the files as you said, and removed them from the Recycle Bin. But couldn't find the programs under "Add/Remove Programs," so I think I got rid of them the first time around.

Attached is the ComboFix log from after I dragged the CFScript into ComboFix.

I removed the programs and files for Java and Adobe Reader and reinstalled the updated versions as you said.

Followed the ATF Cleaner

Then ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner again this morning and it worked this time.

Second attached is the KAS log.

Third attached is the HijackThis log.

Thanks for your time and patience!

I know you said I should either pick between Norton and McAfee. I like my Norton but I can't find where the McAfee is installed. I checked "Add/Remove Programs" with no luck.

A couple months back I tried to install McAfee VirusScan7.0.0 and it's very odd it never scans or enables itself. I've tried to uninstall it when I couldn't figure out how to enable it but couldn't find it listed under "Add/Remove Programs." I can find the file under "Program Files" but when I try to delete it, it says it cannot be delted because it's being used by a person or program. Whenever I turn on my computer the icon always appears in the bottom right task bar (by the time). It always has a red cross across it indicating that it doesn't work. I've tried enabling it but it always goes back to that red cross. Anyway, I've given up trying to use it but at the same time haven't figured out how to remove it...so I've just left it there.

Hi

Delete C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\46AA329B file. Other found items will be removed when ComboFix is uninstalled. We'll do that a bit later.

Please try this (http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe) McAfee removal tool in order to get McAfee removed.

I deleted the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\46AA329B and emptied my recycle bin.

I ran the McAfee removal tool and the icon that used to show up on the bottom right is gone. However, the "Network Associates" folder is still in my "Program Files." I tried deleting it but it says "Cannot delete shext.dll: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." No big deal if you can't figure out how to delete it, just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for your help! Let me know if there are any other steps I need to take.

Hi

Let's try removing problematic folder with a tool.

We need to execute an OTMoveIt3 script
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click theOTMoveIt3 icon on your desktop.
Paste the following code under the Paste Fix Here area. Do not include the word
Code
.

:Files
C:\Program Files\Network Associates

Push the large MoveIt button.
OTMI3 may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
Copy/Paste the contents under the Results line here in your next reply with a fresh hjt log. How's the system running?
If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

I ran the OTMI3, it didn't restart, but attached is the "Results Log" and updated "HijackThis Log."

My computer is running just as it did before the malware! :2thumb: No more crazy pop ups.

Thanks very much for your help, patience, and thoroughness!

Let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

Hi

There's one more thing we have to do. Not malware related but we have to remove leftover service of McAfee :santa:

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O23 - Service: Network Associates Task Manager (McTaskManager) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\vstskmgr.exe (file missing)

Close browsers and fix checked.

Creating & executing batch file
-------------------------------

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop. (If you are still unsure on how to do this there is a little tutorial with pictures here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Bat_File))
@echo off
sc stop McTaskManager
sc delete McTaskManager

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.

Post a fresh hjt log.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!).

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Happy Holidays,
Blade :santa:

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

My computer is running just like it used to!

I followed all your instructions, though I couldn't find an Internet Explorer7 Update (under Add/Remove Programs I do have updates downloaded from 12/20, so those may be the latest ones) and I decided against downloading the host files because my computer is sometimes slow as it already is.

Ran my SpyBot and looks like the computer is clean.

Again, thanks so much for your help, you're a lifesaver to me and I'm sure many people out there!
