Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

After that, rename HijackThis.exe to BigMike66.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

I first started with the s/w AVG to locate and remove the infections.

I was still getting random browser window openings.

I quit the AVG program, but did not uninstall or reboot.

I installed Antivir, and the result is a popup:

"Antivir Guard: Attentin, Detection!"

Is the TR/Vundo.MV Trojan

Options with radio buttons:

Repair (grayed out), Move to quarantine, Delete, Rename, Deny access, Ignore

If any of these are selected, and then OK, nothing happens other than additional "Antivir Guard: Attentin, Detection!" window popups opening.

Right now there are 16 of these windows opened. Task Manager shows the Image Name under the Processes tab as: avwsc.exe (SYSTEM) and guardgui.exe (Mike)

It appears as though I've taken a huge step backwards. The machine is unusable.

Note: all three of the free programs you suggested were avail from download.com. It was quite unusual to NOT see the program file name listed
prior to downloading. The point is, when I was promted to save the file, the name did not appear to be what the program was. I was skeptical, but after repeated attempts of verifying the link, I continued. And the further point is: did I indeed download and load a program that has caused more problems?

I also had to verify that you were correctly titled above your avatar!

I will await your response before attempting any further actions.

Yes that was kind of expected that those programs are unable to clean that infection and if that happens, you will get loads of popups from program as it doesn't know what it should do. And that was exactly what happened.

However, you will need some antivirus installed. If you have now AntiVir installed, please right-click task bar icon and untick antivir guard (or similar).

Let me know if it helped for those popups.

I've closed all open Antivir popups, however, there are no a/v programs running or visible in taskbar or Task Manager.

The Antivir popups continue until the number reaches 16.

I'm not against purchasing an a/v program if that's what it will take to get my machine usable again.

Assuming that I'll even be able to load additional s/w:

is there an a/v program that is best suited for Virtumonde?

I ran the AVG a/v, and the results are:

0.

I was able to launch the Avira AntiVir and then "deactivate" AntiVir Guard.
This has stopped the popups.

We don't use antivirus to remove Virtumonde but other means :) Antivirus should be installed due to protection.

You are now running two antiviruses.

Please uninstall either AVG 8 or AntiVir and post a fresh HijackThis log afterwards.
