Hello group,

Hope I'm in the right place for this.

I'm using Vista Home Premium. I ran Spybot S&D yesterday, as administrator, and it kicked up something called AskSbar. I take it that this is some kind of spyware. When I tried to remove it, I got a message saying I need permission to perform this action, even though I'm logged in as administrator. Same result when I moved the file to the desktop and simply tried to drag the file to recycle bin.

Anybody know how to get rid of this thing?

Thanx in advance,
Chet

chet, read this thread about elevation rights in Windows Vista. It'll help you:

Askbar, is just merely a toolbar. Some anti-malware applications detect it as spyware because it tracks down users browsing activities, so some users feel it is an invasion of privacy.

chet49:

Did you elevate the administrator rights when running Spybot by right-click and selecting "Run as administrator" from the context menu instead of just double clicking (left clicking) to start Spybot?

What version of Spybot - Search & Destroy are you running (Spybot » Help » About)?

What is the message you are getting?

_____

If you are not running:
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.0.30 or 1.6.0.31
Latest detection update 12/3/2008
Upgrade or update as appropriate and try running Spybot with elevated administrator rights again.

If that fails to correct the the problem, try running Spybot in Safe Mode (http://www.laplink.com/support/kb/article.asp?ID=102) and see if that helps with the removal of the problem.

If Spybot still fails to correct the problem consider posting in the Malware Removal (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) forum and having someone take a look at your system.

If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) ( http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288).

Holy shit! I have this problem too! I can't get rid of this stupid thing, and I'm afraid to access any of my external hard drives, because I don't know what in the hell it will do to them, let alone what it's already doing to my computer's main hard drive! I keep asking someone from the team, and they keep telling me to do the same things, and it never works!

CharadeYouAre:

Is there a uninstaller possibly in the Start Menu or in the Programs list window in Vista?

How about fixing the Ask Bar in Safe Mode? Is the Ask bar installed with IE? Try disabling it in IE then uninstalling if the first two suggestions do not work.

YES, I'VE TRIED REMOVING IT IN SAFE MODE. IT DIDN'T WORK. And I don't use IE, I use Firefox. Also, what uninstaller are you referring to?

There will be a a uninstaller for the toolbar either in the Windows Start Menu>Programs or the Add/Remove Programs window via Control Panel in Windows XP.

Where in the Start Menu? I don't see it!

I'll take that as a 'no'.

Um, so if there's no uninstaller in the Start Menu and there's no uninstaller in the Add/Remove Programs window (very sneaky, Ask...) you might as well try removing it in Safe Mode when you allow Spybot to fix it.
