Removed entries as instructed - 2nd & 3rd entries were not listed (I hope I did nothing wrong) since I have already run another Spybot S&D scan which found and removed these entires along with the following:

(SBI $E12D746) User settings
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1780899583-2515733295-84924198-1007\Software\Microsoft\fias4013

which Spybot identified as Virtumonde

and

(SBI $3F5CA9DA) Autorun Settings (layafarike)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1780899583-2515733295-84924198-1008\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\layafarike

which Spybot indenified as Virtumonde.prx

Spybot also corrected two WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass entries. I then applied the most recent Windows Updates after turning on my automatic updates settings again, as it had repeatedly turned itself off. I also installed SpywareBlaster. I plan to install Zone Alarm as a replacement for the Windows Firewall once this is resolved.

Sounds great. :yahoo:

Thank you very much!!

Just one question:

I see an entry in the log that looks strange:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {dc7a973d-7dab-4ee8-8805-28f17a0c0081} - (no file)

Is this a problem or potential problem? Can or should it be deleted? Or does it belong there?

Any other suggestions on how to prevent another infection would be appreciated.

hi,

your welcome. that one BHO is just a registry leftover, wont cause any harm. you can have hjt delete it if you want.

if you use hjt to delete it you will have to disable spybots tea timer first. like this:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

after the reboot use hjt to delete the one 04.
re-enable tea timer.

keep MBAM and always check for updates before using it.

two things: check your java version and make new restore points;

Java:
Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml?ff3

system restore: the how and why;

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

and last my parting "speech":

Reducing Your Risk:
The Short Version

1) Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you install software to your computer. Do you trust the website?
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include: warez,or p2p file sharing then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
