I have run spybot scan over and over again and I can't get rid of Smitfraud-C. I had various trogans on my computer and they seem to be gone now. It all started when I somehow got this toolbar from a company called Mirar. I never requested it and it has been difficult to remove. Long story short, I am still getting connected to websites out of the blue that I don't want to go to. I hope that is related to this Smitfraud-C and that someone can help me remove it permanantly. below is my hijackthis log.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

This appears to be a company/corporate computer, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25712&postcount=5
Note: When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.
The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department, nor can we anticipate alterations or configurations that may have been made to a business machine, or how it will interact with the tools commonly used in the removal of malware.
More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.
To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.
Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks for responding. This is a company computer, the owners have been notified and are aware of the problem. However, we are a small company and do not have an IT department. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Smitfraud is usually a hidden infection, I do see this:
O3 - Toolbar: Mirar - {5558DD94-714D-4BF0-827E-A627DDCA16B1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winkd77.dll (file missing)

Let's start like this:
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
Post the C:\rapport.txt
2) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Question: when Interent Explorer 8 is out in beta and IE 7 is much more secure, why are you still running IE6?

Thank you so much for helping. I ran the Smitfraudfix.exe but it seemed to get hung up. I also ran the uninstall report as requested. Both of them are below. As far as your question regarding Internet Explorer, I don't have any reason for running an older version except to say that I didn't realize it. I just assumed that if there were updated versions, they would be part of an automatic update. Should I update it now?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. You are right, Smitfraudfix is not complete but I have enough to proceed with the cleaning phase. Please make sure you allow it time to complete the cleaning.
You asked: "Should I update it now?"
No...pleae wait until we kill all of the malware, and I will give you a link to the newest version. I personally stay away from beta (testing) versions and my suggestion would be that you do also.
Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.
Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.
Tell me how the computer is running now.
Thanks
I will comment on the uninstall list, this is important, just not the priority at this point.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 <<< out of date and not secure as is the case with the 6.0 stuff above I will have to assume, PSI will know.

I seem to be having problems with the cleaning step. I rebooted my computer in safe mode and tried step 2 as instructed. Again, the program just got stuck. I waited an hour and it never got to the promts you told me about. Did I do something wrong?

It's likely McAfee is blocking part of the download, that is what the disclaimer in the instructions is for. Delete what you have, then turn off McAfee while you get the download on the Desktop. I find it ironic that McAfee did not protect you but seems to be able to block you from the tool you need to clean it. We need to get Smitfraudfix to run, expecially for that corrupted hosts file.
Thanks

Ok, before I try again, I wanted to make sure that I did everything correctly. When I go to the link for the SmitfraudFix there are a few download links. Do I select the first one or one of the Mirrors? Do I run it or do I save it to my desktop and then run it?
Also, when I reboot in safe mode I had to sign on in safe mode as Administrator, will that make a difference?
As far as McAfee not detecting this trogan, our subscription ran out about 6 months ago and it wasn't renewed until after I started having problems. The curious thing is that when I run a scan with McAfee, it doesn't say that I have any corrupt files. I have disabled it for now anyhow.

Have repeatedly tried the download of the smitfraudfix.exe through the link you posted. Have multiple times just gotten to a black screen, but twice have gotten to a blue screen that once again gets hung up on the Windows\System32 part of the scan. Have tried to start up in safe mode and run the clean part, but it gets hung up host section. This is all done after Mcafee was disabled as well as the Resident Tea Timer in Spybot. Can you offer any additional tips, help, suggestions, thanks again for your time

Not a good sign, we still need to clean the corrupted hosts file, but let's try MBAM first:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I turned off system restore, reboot, then turned back on again. Then I ran another full scan from MBAM. This time no files found. I enabled McAfee protection again and so far no problems but I have only had Explorer open long enough to post this. Thank you so much!!!!!!!! What's next? Do I need to update IE now?

I personally run Internet Explorer 7, and Microsoft suggests you run it to be more secure.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
but if you are going to continue to run out of date program and not make every effort to keep yourself safe online, you can not assume any browser is going to do this for you. Review this information for additioal help:

Thanks again for all your help. You are a life saver!!! I updated to IE7 as recommended. I'm not sure why it was not an automatic update with windows. Also, in an earlier post you stated that I had some old files. I downloaded the PSI but it didn't say anything about the J2SE and Java programs you mentioned. I feel that my problem started when I tried to do a "Java" update from a website I frequent to view public records (clerk of the court) using Java. Is this possible? Should I uninstall all but the Java(TM) 6 update 11?

I feel that my problem started when I tried to do a "Java" update from a website I frequent to view public records (clerk of the court) using Java.
That is certainly possible, I always get my downloads from the site of the program I am updating. I do not know why PSI is not targeting Java? I will have to see what it does on my computer. The answer is YES, uninstall all but the most resent version as the link I posted says:

Thanks again for all you help. My computer has been clean for 24 hours now. :bigthumb: You have given me great advise and I will definately follow it when surfing in the future. One small thing, my computer makes sound (Windows XP critical stop.wav) every once in a while but I don't see any pop up to let me know what this is. Should I be concerned? It started the same time as all the other issues. Other than that, my computer is back to normal.
Thanks again for you help and happy holidays!!!:santa:

Without more information, hard to say what that is, you can ask at a Windows forum:
