Virtumonde etc infection, Help please

Hiya, I am having problems with virtumonde and other infections. AVG, Malwarebites Anti-Malware, Search & Destroy, Ad-aware have been ran and found problems, but even after removing the problems, they re-appear later. Problems I've been having are pop ups for search engines appearing, also at one point my windows would not fully load up (i.e. the start menu wouldn't appear on startup). AVG detects some infections; but like I said, never fully removes it. Also, when I used my USB stick in another computer now, the anti-virus software identifies it as well, (mentioning it just in case yous fix it and the USB causes a new problem). One last thing; I'm not sure if it is relevant but some java apps do not load properly and cause my firefox to crash, do you have any ideas? Pretty sure its up to date as is my anti-malware/virus software, and it works fine verified on the sun micro site... but sometimes 2 java apps are shown at the bottom right which i suspect is related but i can not resolve.... Thanks in advanced... got a lot of important uni files and now is not the time to lose them!

Hi Nathan

Sounds like your USB stick has been infected by a flash infection. Keep it away from other systems until it and your system has been cleaned.

Have the stick plugged in during whole process so we can clean it.

Hi, thanks for looking into this Blade81. Just to let you know I am aware you replied; I am currently downloading the recovery file from microsoft. Might take a few hours though.

Thought I'd let you know now in case it causes any problems later...


I tried to run combofix on my own before... but I just double clicked it; but it came up with no problems. That was it. I hope that doesn't affect anything. (I am aware it said wait for proper help to use it... I was quite desperate to fix these problems)

Also it is an external hard drive (Western Digital mybook) not an USB. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Hi I am having trouble with the tutorial for combofix

I downloaded combofix and the windows file as required

When i drag the windows ontop of the combofix an open file security warning came up. I just clicked run initially.. and a blue window came up. however, I don't think that was what the tutorial meant to happen.

External hard drive is connected thru USB interface so it makes no difference. From your explanation I got a picture it was your USB stick that was infected.

Have you got any further with ComboFix? When blue background appears is there any text visible? Remember that you shouldn't click or do anything else during ComboFix run.

Ok. Thanks for letting me know. Let's use Flash Disinfector and try clean your external hard drive.


Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe) by sUBs and save it to your desktop:

* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
* Follow any prompts that may appear.
* Wait until the program has finished scanning, then please exit the program.

The tool may ask you to insert your flash drive, or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the tool to clean it up as well.

Next scan your system+external hard drive with Kaspersky online scanner.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.



The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.



You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run



Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives



Click on My Computer under Scan.



Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.



Click on Save Report As....



Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.



Save this report to a convenient place.



Copy and paste that information into your topic.



The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.
