View Full Version : Aftermath of Virus/Malware attack, Internet Explorer and other problems

Hi, my problem started after I uninstalled Norton and installed avast and my nephew spent several hours Thanksgiving day on my computer playing games. The next day windows were popping open in droves on my desktop. I'm thinking this was more to do with my nephew than with avast? I ran avast and it found hundreds of viruses. Since then, I have researched and taken the following measures to clean my system (all or most have been found on forums such as these):

I have run free versions of:

Ad aware
Ccleaner
Malwarebytes
Windows Defender
Alwil software virus worm cleaner (avast)
Spybot Search and Destroy
Smitfraudfix

Each of these apps found something to remove, the first few I ran found many cases of malware. I installed Ad aware yesterday and it still found one instance of malware.

My computer just isn't running as fast as it was and the one problem I've been noticing is one that I have read about on this forum. See "Internet Explorer won't display on screen". Many times I cannot open IE and a window appears to flash on the screen sometimes and doesn't open. Each time you can find the instance in Windows Task Manager as iexplore.exe. When logging off or shutting down, the iexplore.exe will flash several times in a box to "end now" before you can log off or shut down.

So, after finding the post mentioned above, I have followed some of the instructions to remove leftover Symantec files. In the Shared Symantec folder it gave me an "access denied" on a few of the files. I have also disabled my google toolbar and probably some other things that I can't remember. I can't yet determine if this has solved the IE problem because sometimes it works okay anyway.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition with IE 6 updated to SP3 (note the SP3 update was also recent -- could this be a problem?) Should I have IE 7 now, I don't know if it is any better?

In any case, I am including my Hijack file here in the hopes that someone here can please look at it and tell me if there is anything there that I should be concerned about. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, I am posting the contents of the log, but I can't seem to generate the info file again. I initially clicked on the link and just ran the program, but then noticed that you said to save it to my desktop. So, I closed the log and info files and started over by saving it to my desktop first. Now it won't generate the info log again. Sorry about that. I will keep trying to generate it, but for now here is the log and if you can tell me how to get the info one again, I would appreciate it. Thanks very much.

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 4.18.8

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=218503&postcount=4) where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected.
The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Step 1

Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Virus Total

Please visit Virustotal (http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html)
Copy/paste the the following file path into the window
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\84D1301A.exe
Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.

If Virustotal is too busy please try Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 2

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I notice that you have MBAM installed, please do the following

Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Select the Update tab
Click Update

When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
Select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 3

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 4

Remove Programs

Older versions of some programs have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs (XP) / Programs and Features (Vista) . If any of the following programs are listed there,
click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove.

Adobe Reader 7.0.9 << See below for updating Adobe
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Now close the Control Panel.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Step 5

Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply

Virus Total Results
MalwareBytes Log
Combofix Log
How are things running now ?

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Additional Notes

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Adobe Reader is a large program and uses unnecessary space.
If you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.0 from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php << Recommended

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.

Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
Click Download
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Hello, I copied and pasted the web page with virus total results. The web page indicated that the scan current status was finished, but when pasted below it says "loading...queued waiting.... etc...." I'm not sure why. It seems as if Virus total found several viruses (?). Anyway, below is the Virus total, followed by Malware log, followed by Combo fix. My computer seems to be running quite smoothly, I haven't noticed anything very different so far. I have not had the internet explorer problem lately anyway, it seemed to have disappeared after I disabled some Symantec services and got rid of the google task bar (before I posted here). The only problem I had with the directions for combo fix was with the windows recovery console. I dragged the windows update onto the combofix icon, but it just brought up the security file warning to start running combo fix. I don't know if Windows recovery was somehow installed in the background? I did not run combofix then because I had not yet disabled all my antivirus apps. Anyway, I never got a message after reboot to state that windows recovery was being installed or anything.

Oh goodness, I just posted all three logs above and I was going to go and remove Adobe and update Java as I saw this was added at the end as "Note". but now I see it was also part of Step 4 that I didn't do! So sorry, I guess the scrolling back and forth helped me to miss it. Should I re-do the logs? I am going to uninstall Adobe now? Thanks so much.

The web page indicated that the scan current status was finished, but when pasted below it says "loading...queued waiting.... etc...." I'm not sure why.
That's fine, it always says that

It seems as if Virus total found several viruses (?).
Virus Total checks the file with 38 different scanners, each database has a different name for the same infection.

I don't know if Windows recovery was somehow installed in the background? ~ Anyway, I never got a message after reboot to state that windows recovery was being installed or anything.
The log indicates that Recovery Console is installed, so that's OK

Should I re-do the logs?
No need, the updates I recommended are for your future safety they are nothing to do with your current problem.

Those logs look good now, let's have a last scan to make sure we get everything in the final sweep

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review: Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Looking good.

You need to empty your Sent folder in Outlook Express, there is an infected e-mail there.
C:\Documents and Settings\Katie~\Outlook Express\Sent Items.dbx

OTMoveIt
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe) and save it to your desktop

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
Copy the lines in the codebox below. ( Make sure you include :Processes )

:Processes
:Files
c:\documents and settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\LimeWire
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\84D1301A.zip

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt3

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Remove Norton

Hi, regarding emptying my email sent items folder -- do you mean I need to delete everything in my sent items? Or can I find just the infected item to delete? Just wondering as I'm sure I need to keep some of it. I will be back a later tonight to follow the other directions! I'm on my way out the door. thanks so much!

Hi, regarding emptying my email sent items folder -- do you mean I need to delete everything in my sent items? Or can I find just the infected item to delete?

That's up to you, I have no idea which one it is.
The only way to be sure would be delete all the ones you don't need to keep and then re scan at Kaspersky.

Hi, I decided to just go ahead and delete all my sent items and hope I don't need them! I deleted them and then went to the actual sent items.dbx folder which was still there and deleted that and then emptied the recycle bin. Here are the OTMoveIt results. I am now going to uninstall Norton. thank you.

Now click Fix checked
Click yes to any prompts
Close HijackThis

Congratulations your logs look clean :)

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

First lets tidy up

Please delete RSIT.exe and C:\RSIT (entire folder)
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Uninstall Combofix
This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Open OTMoveIt Click Cleanup,
it will now connect to the internet and get a list of files to delete.
When a box pops up click YES.

----------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/) for details

AntiSpyware
AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) <<< A must have program It includes host protection and registry protection A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
MalwareBytes Anti-malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) <<< A New and effective program
a-squared Free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com) An excellent startup manager and then some !! Notifies you if programs are added to startup Allows delayed startup A must have addition
SpywareBlaster 4.0 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
SpywareGuard 2.2 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware. Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
ZonedOut (http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=33) Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
MVPS HOSTS (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip) This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) by WinHelp2002. Not required if you are using other host file protections

Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
Opera (http://www.opera.com/) Another popular alternative
Netscape (http://browser.netscape.com/addons) Another popular alternative Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25) Free and very simple to use
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=4959)

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

Happy surfing K'

Katana, thank you so much for taking me through all these steps to get rid of all the nasties on my computer! I really appreciate this and I think you're doing a great service. There are a couple of things I wanted to mention:

After I ran the OTMoveit clean up, right as it started the reboot, an "End Program" for explorer.exe flashed on the screen which I thought was odd. I haven't seen that since I thought I had got rid of the problem with Internet explorer when that used to happen all the time. Also, a red shield with a white X which seems to be the Windows Security Center has re appeared and is warning that my computer may be at risk since the firewall is turned off. I'm not sure why that is coming back, but I have never enabled the Windows firewall because I use a Netgear router/firewall. Is that the correct thing to do?

There is one other thing I forgot to mention earlier. I have two user accounts set up and when logging on as the other user (during this process of following your instructions) I found an "Access Violation message for module TeaTimer.exe and also an End Program for Tea Timer on the desktop. This did not happen on my user account. This seemed to happen when I had disabled the Teatimer for that one test, so I was wondering if that was normal or if perhaps I had not disabled it properly? Or needed to disable it in both places?

If you don't mind also, a couple of questions. Do you recommend me updating to IE 7? I can't think of any reason not to and as you said it seems more secure. Also, is it okay to use the "itunes" program? We do have this on the computer and you didn't say to remove it. I'm not sure if this is also considered one of the P2P programs.

Thank you again! You've been a fantastic help!

Reboot a couple of times and see if it happens again

One of the tools we used may have reset Security Centre settings, you need to open it and check the box that says you have a third party firewall that you will monitor

It could be any number of reasons causing that, I'd start by uninstalling and then reinstalling Spybot for a start.

Update to IE 7, and then use a different browser (FireFox etc )
(Malware can use IE even if you don't )

iTunes is fine, P2P is where you are downloading files from an unknown source.
(as much as I don't like Apple, I doubt they are malware authors :D: )

I rebooted a couple of times and it did not happen again and I have reset the Windows security center, so I think all is well. I will also uninstall and install spybot.

Just to be sure I understand, you recommend updating to IE7 but not using it? The update will just make it more secure incase malware uses it even though I am not?

Thanks again! :)
