Hoping someone could help, please. I was browsing website that I've generally found safe before, but I clicked a link and it started going downhill from there...
On the infected pc I am unable browse the AVG website, or even this forum. Searches on Google, while appearing legitimate in the search results, results in redirections to somewhere else when clicked.... I've seen "Jump" in the browser's title bar. Using Firefox 2.0.0.18 as main browser, but noticed that the same happens in IE

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Not much information in the HJT log, are you using a router? A lot of routers are being hijacked recently. If you use a router, I suggest you start by resetting the router and changing your password.
1) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Just a start, add any comments you think will help.
Thanks

argh took me forever to get back here. For some reason I couldn't load this forum, it keeps timing out. A traceroute hangs at some place ending like manite.net, or something like that...
I still can't access it directly, but found a proxy website that lets me in. (Hope the proxy website is safe!)
anyway, thanks so much, pskelley for your help. I'm not a very technical or computer-smart, so please bear with me.
Yes, I'm using a modem/router. The product info describes it as a 4 port Voip modem/router. I can provide a link to the manufacturer's website on this model if you need to see it?
I accessed the modem's config page, saved the configurations, did a factory reset from there, then restored the config from the backup, and changed the modem's config page password. Was that what you meant by resetting it and changing the password?
I downloaded Malwarebytes from the link you provided, and installed it but it wouldn't run until I renamed the exe. I couldn't seem to run any updates either - the db info was 12/3/2008, version 1456, fingerprints loaded 59475).
Renaming the exe allowed me to actually run it, but when it was done scanning and needed to reboot to fix some stuff, it couldn't find the exe. So I restored the original file name, and rebooted again...
Not sure if that actually worked, so I ran Malwarebytes again (and it would actually run this time with the original exe name). Logs of both scans here

there wasn't any Microsoft, hotfixes, security updates etc that you mentioned for me to remove.... um, I'm rather slack and I should have had those?
I noticed that earlier I couldn't access Microsoft's support pages, I can access it now after MBAM. AVG is also able to update.
It kinda looks like MBAM solved it all, but I'm a little worried about all the trojans and rootkit thingy it listed. Is this pc now forever less than secure? I cannot/should not be using it for online banking, purchases, etc?
thanks again, pskelley

Yes, I'm using a modem/router. The product info describes it as a 4 port Voip modem/router. I can provide a link to the manufacturer's website on this model if you need to see it?
I don't need it you do. I suggest you contact the router tech suport if you need help I have no expertise in the many routers but they do.
Since the junk may have been sending information to the hackers, once you know you are clean I suggest you reset the router and change the password again.
The junk you had is infected a load of folks just now and I am not 100% sure where the junk comes from. I believe it blocks help sites to get you to purchase the junk that is causing the problem. This is called "fraud"
Since this one is very nasty, I would like to have combofix take another look to make sure nothing is left.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should. You may do this as time permits but it is important, no need to post the list again.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742)
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:

(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Both out of date:

there wasn't any Microsoft, hotfixes, security updates etc that you mentioned for me to remove.... um, I'm rather slack and I should have had those?
That is unusual, wait until we finish then visit Windows Updates and follow the instructions. You will probably be given Service Pack #3 to install, if you have issues with it, Microsoft has made free support available.
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
Everything looks good from here, before I wrapup, could you run the computer for a day keeping an eye open for any issues. If all is well, post tomorrow (if that works for you) and I will post closing instructions.
I would change that router password again to be sure.
Thanks...Phil

Hmm thought I removed that through the Control Panel. Can I just delete this folder?
Yup, thank you. I'll use it over a day or two, and post back.
I ran AVG after I updated, and it found one infection, a virus identified as Win32/Cryptor, and moved it to the virus vault.
Firefox is now v. 2.0.0.20
will see about updating Adobe reader and Java and J2se, and changing the modem/router's password.
what about the windows updates (or my lack thereof)?
thanks again!

Thanks for your questions:
Hmm thought I removed that through the Control Panel. Can I just delete this folder?
Since it is not showing in Add Remove programs, means the uninstaller did not remove that. You will have to delete it manually, let me know if there is an issue, we can use CFScript.
what about the windows updates (or my lack thereof)?
I covered this at the end of my post #4, once we wrapup and I have posted closing information, then follow those instructions. Windows will want to download and install Service Pack #3 as it should and if there are issues you will need help from Microsoft at the link I provided.
Thanks

I right-clicked and deleted, no issues!
Adobe Reader is now 8.1.3
I've removed the J2SE runtime environment 5.0 update 6 and Jave(TM) 6 Update 3, and both were replaced with Jave(TM)6 Update 11.
Did I somehow miss out the J2SE?

"Adobe Reader is now 8.1.3" <<< version is out of date, read the link I provided earlier. You need to update to 9.0 or you can use
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows which I explained earlier also. Foxit is about 1/10 the size of Adobe 9.0. That is your call.
"both were replaced with Jave(TM)6 Update 11" <<< this is the newest version.

Apologies, my bad.
I skimmed through the article and since it mentioned that the problem was with 8.1.2, I just ran the Check for Updates within the Reader. So when it upgraded itself to 8.1.3, and there was no further updates after that, I thought it was fine.
I've updated to 9 now, thanks.

Computer and web browsing seems fine - have gone through a day of usual usage.
Got a bit paranoid though, and ran a Kaspersky critical area scan - it picked up this thingy up... :(
File name
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\OJU30NCD\162[1].exe
Threat name
Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.wci
Threats count
1
Funny thing is, Content.IE5 folder is where AVG picked up the Win32/Cryptor problem last time... and to my knowledge I've never had IE5 on this computer.

Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/
To be sure, navigate to that folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files <<< delete the contents of that folder (NOT the folder)
Here is a free tool to clean for you if you wish:
http://www.nutnworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1925
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is your to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

cleaned, folder contents deleted, combofix uninstalled, system restore switched off and on done
MBAM and AVG updated and full scans came back clean, thanks so much :)
I can go ahead and see what windows patches/updates are available now?
I'll probably install spywareblaster and spybot too
