Cannot start Spyboy or HiJackThis

I am helping a friend who has a big malware infection. He has AVG (paid version) installed, but it will not update. Several web sites are blocked (www.safer-networking.org, www.avg.com, windows defender home page)

I did get avg to manually update, but downloading the updates to my pc, burning them to cd, and then installing on his pc. Ran AVG slow scan, whole hard drive. Found and removed several problems, but not all.

On my pc, I downloaded and burned Spyboy, "spybotsd_includes.exe" and the HiJackThis install program.

On his pc, I installed Spybot S&D 1.6 (unchecked "Download updates immediatly"), and it installed. Then I ran "spybotsd_includes.exe". When I double click on the Spybot icon, the program will not start. I get the hourglass, then I get the normal arrow, but no Spybot. I looked in the windows task manager, and it is not there.

I tried to install HiJackThis, but the same thing happens. The hourglass appears, bit the installation just stops without any messages.

What should I do/try next

DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
