View Full Version : Smitfraud: Spywarequake

johnbarwise

Hi All,

Had the fake security alert SpywareQuake on my computer with the wheelchair icon on the toolbar (bottom right portion beside the clock), and the pop-up that requests you to buy the commercial version of the spyware programme. Think my brother downloaded some gambling software, but don't really know for sure where the problem came from.

After running through the steps as detailed in "Smitfraud:Spyaxe, SpywareFalcon, and other desktop type hijacks" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015&highlight=spywarequake) the pop-up wanting me to buy the spyware software has now gone, but there are still lots of pop-ups appearing, toolbars on Internet Explorer and favourites that I can't delete. Is this a completely separate problem? Should I be looking for separate solution to this in the forums?

Logs that were the result of the suggested action below - any comments welcome :)

Thanks, John.

HI

1. Reboot into >>>safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
2. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
3. Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files
4. You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection
5. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file
6. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt ... Post the contents of the C:\rapport.txt file in your next post here...

process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

THEN...

Disconnect from the internet Close ALL browser windows (including this one) - run hijackthis and tick to fix (check the box next to) the list below.........when all are ticked (checked) click the Fix Checked button at the bottom. :-

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cash dent bows readme] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BallLongCashDent\Store comp.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mapi less] C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\APPLIC~1\MPEG16~1\Lies Amok.exe

Reboot then find and delete :-

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BallLongCashDent ... folder

C:\Documents and Settings\JOHNBA~1\Application Data\MPEG16~1 ... folder (These are just the first 6 letters of this folder - I have no way of knowing it's full name )

Steamwiz,

Apologies for the delay - took me a while to get round to doing what you suggested.

I ran smitfraudfix as you suggested (log below) and then managed to fix

"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cash dent bows readme] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BallLongCashDent\Store comp.exe",

but couldn't find

"O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mapi less] C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\APPLIC~1\MPEG16~1\Lies Amok.exe"

on the list to fix it. Don't know what happened there.

I also managed to delete both files you suggested, but had to do it in safe mode, as when I tried to do it in regular mode I got a message saying that the file was in use, even though I had just turned the computer on.

Thanks very much for your help. Computer seems to be pop-up free now. Here are the logs in case you can see anything else that requires attention:

HI John

You still have a little bit of work to do...

You shouldn't have needed to go to safemode to delete those folders if you'd followed my direction in the right order...

let me explain... you couldn't delete the folders because the files were in "use"

In Normal mode these files would be loaded :-

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BallLongCashDent\Store comp.exe

C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\APPLIC~1\MPEG16~1\Lies Amok.exe

So you wouldn't be able to delete the folders they are in... in safemode they wouldn't be loaded so you can delete the folders they are in.

They are loaded from the run keys shown in hijackthis...

If you deleted the run keys first, then rebooted... the files would not be running, and then you could delete the folders...

You didn't do this because the run keys are still there...

so... run hijackthis again and place a checkmark next to these and click "fix checked"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cash dent bows readme] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BallLongCashDent\Store comp.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mapi less] C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNBA~1\APPLIC~1\MPEG16~1\Lies Amok.exe

Run hijackthis again and they should no longer be there...

THEN....

Delete the Smitfraudfix that you have, it is now out of date, & download a new one...the latest version is 2.42

Follow these instructions exactly to delete the bad files, you need to enter the #2 when asked ... your last 2 logs were both from entering #1

Download: SmitfraudFix.zip from :-

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (the file contains both English and French versions)

Download to your desktop
unzip the zip file to your desktop (they will be extracted to a folder called SmitfraudFix

1. Reboot into >>>safe mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
2. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
3. Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files

+ a new hijackthis log.

process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
