Possible Virtumonde Infection

I ran several checks on my machine and the names Virtumonde and FakeAlert appeared. I combated the problem with SpyBot S&D and HJT. Of course, my HJT log follows.

While I am unsure of my current status, I do know I had some form of virus that impeded me from using the internet, and brought up IE pages to various fake pc-repair sites, and advertisements. When I learned of the IE hole I immidiately started using Firefox, and I attempted to enforce IE's offline setting without success.

After using SpyBoy and HJT I was able to single out C:windows/system23/feloviko.dll and shred it. However, there is another malicious program that attempts to add "Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\feloviko.dll",s" to my system registry every 5 seconds. I blacklisted this with TeaTimer and after awhile it changed to attempt to add "Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\titewiko.dll",a" instead. titewiko.dll does not exist on my computer that I can see.

Shortly after I blacklisted the regedit for titewiko.dll, the timer for the resident log became corrupted and required me to hard reboot my computer and do a chdsk.

Since I shredded feloviko I have not had any popups except about the time it switched to titewiko, and none again since I blacklisted that.

I am not a professional but I think I was infected with some sort of virtumonde virus and I managed to hurt it somehow, but the malicious code that keeps editing my registry really, really bothers me, expecially because upon rebooting I get a error saying feloviko.dll does not exist.

Over the past 2 days I have carefully read over how to use the tools that the helpers suggest for malware removal. I implemented some techniques, and I found none to be ultimately effective. Luckily I did not damage my computer, and seeing these programs in operation I understand firsthand why they are not toys.

However, I believe I was ultimately able to beat Virtumonde.prx into submission by examining and comparing HJT logs and S&D logs. Eventually I was able to determine which DLLs were not system critical, and I am confident that the malware nature of the infection meant it was located in several resilient .dll files and had not infected any others. Only time will tell, though, if this is true.

I believe that virtumonde randomly names .dll files that will lock themselves into the system registry from boot. By examining HJT logs I was able to determine the names of these .dll files. In my first post, I actually did not shred feloviko.dll, I located it and manually deleted it. The other .dll files I found persisting in my registry were titowiko, yavarela, and genahowa. I could not find these files with windows explorer, either my eyes are bad or they are somehow hidden on a level beyond "hidden files". I found a solution in going straight to S&D shredder, going to my Windows/system32 directory and typing in the names of those .dll files. Regardless of how they are hidden, the shredder found them and diced them.

I then went to my wininit.ini file, and there I found that wininit was creating the files feloviko and titowiko from a temp file at system boot. Unfortunately my first response was to completely clear my wininit.ini file in notepad and save the changes, so I cannot show you what file the command was calling to create those dlls. I do know that since I had cleared all my temp internet files, deleted feloviko before I shredded the others, and rebooted, feloviko did not reappear, so wiping out the internet cache probably eliminated the source.

After shredding the .dlls and clearing my wininit.ini file, I ran S&D again and it came up with the regular virtumonde.prx infections in the system registry. I cleaned them up, rebooted, and ran S&D once again, and those registry values did not re-appear this time.

To anyone reading this besides a professional:
I took those steps after spending well over 48 hours studying what these tools do, and I was still not completely sure of what I was doing. Never, ever shred or delete .dll files until you are absolutely positive of what you are doing. And do not play with your wininit.ini file without knowing what it does and what each entry in it is for.


To Professionals:
I believe the virtumonde.prx infection I was suffering was very minor compared to what some other users here are having problems with. I believe I have contained, or eliminated, it so the system helpers can please pass over this thread for help. If any system helper would like more information about what I was doing to my computer in my attempts, I can respond via private message.
