I ran the smidfraud self-help procedure but failed to keep an Ewido log and was unable to run Spybot. Am wondering if I am OK now. all features in m
y Norton security program were disabled and I am unable to turn them back on. Thanks.

Hi Calamity, Thanks for responding. As I indicated I ran all steps of the smidfraud self help program except the spybot scan (I had trouble downloading the latest version). The pop-ups have ceased and I have my homepage back but some settings seem to have changed . My e-mail programs aren't working and I can't get any elements of my disabled Norton security program turned on again. Here is a new scan.

Yes, you still have some problems and some of the infection still there. We can fix you up.
First, do this:
Download the Hoster from here: http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
Unzip/decompress the zip file contents to your desktop
Doubleclick on Hoster.exe to run it.
Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.
Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself

Next, you have an old version of SmitfraudFix. There is a brand new out to deal with the variant you have.
Delete your current SmitfraudFix folder and SmitfraudFix.zip
Get the latest version here and run it according to these instructions:
1. Print out or save to notepad these instructions as we will need to do most steps offline and in SAFE MODE (so you won't have this window open to see the instruction from)
2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
3. Update Ewido. Launch Ewido, there should be a big yellowE icon on your desktop, double-click it.
c. The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
d. The program will now go to the main screen
e. On the left hand side of the main screen click on Update
f. Click on Start. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
g. Do not scan yet. We'll do that later in SAFE MODE. After updating close Ewido and any open programs.
4. Reboot into Safe Mode

5. Once in safe mode, start Ewido AntiMalware
a. Click on scanner
b. Click on *complete system scan*
c. Let the program scan the machine.
d. While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Remove, then put a check next to Perform action on all infections in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time.
Checkmark the box: *Create encrypted backup in the quarantine* (recommended)
Click OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
6. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

7. Reboot back to normal mode.
8. Now please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log in a new topic along with the Ewido log you saved earlier (or the Adaware log) and the Panda report.

Hi Calamity. Here is the new Hijack This scan. I assume that you saw the Hijack This, Ewido, and rapport.txt scans that I posted last Saturday. This scan should not be much different as I have stopped using the infected computer because my Norton Security has been disabled.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

NOTE: Do not confuse that file with the legitimate file that has a similar name (services.exe - it has the extra s on it)
The bad file, if found is service.exe (no extra s) - delete it.
4. Delete the existing SmitfraudFix folder, and then download a new copy as the tool has been updated, so it is possible there are more files to be found
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.
5. Update Ewido using the Update button and do another full system scan
Let it remove any infected files found (and use the option to *Create encrypted backup in the quarantine* as well)
6. Please generate a report from this free tool for review:

If you have antivirus script protection, please allow it (silentrunners.vbs) to run. While waiting, a box will say done.
Wait until there is a All Done message !!, Then open and post the log next to it.

Hi Calamity,
One problem in following your procedure. I found a file in C:WINDOWS\System 32 entitled "service" (no exe) as well as one entitled "services" (again no exe) I assumed that the "service" file was the one to delete but was unable to do so. Got a message saying that the file was in use by another program or person. Gave up after several tries.
The Rapport.txt file was clean in all categories so I am not including it. Here are the others:

Unzip it and doubleclick on Filefind.exe to run it
Copy and paste into the *Directory* searchbox the following line:

Then copy and paste into the *file* find search box:
service.exe
Then press the *find* button. Wait for it to scan. Copy and paste the results found back here please.
Also, it doesn't look like the Silent Runners finished before you copied the log. Wait until you see a box popup that says: done
Then copy the log (the log appears while the scan is still in progress so you have to wait for it to finish to get the whole thing)

ok, this is our culprit. See how it says service.exe (not services.exe)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe - 8226 Bytes <---ID it by the file size as well.
But first, we need to stop the service from running to delete it.
Close all programs you have open and any open windows. So copy these instructions to have handy. These nexts steps will require a reboot.
Next, go to Start->Run and type: Services.msc then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Find Windows Service Manager (WSCM) in the list.
Double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.
Do a scan only with HijackThis and checkmark the following in the list that appears, then press the *fix checked* button

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click on "Yes" which it asks to confirm you want to reboot.
After reboot, please scan with HijackThis and post a fresh HijackThis log please and do a file find again on the file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\service.exe
and post the results from that as well.
Me again, Went through the WSCM procedure but did not find the 023----- item on the hijack list. WSCM was still running under "disabled." Any thoughts? In the meantime I will keep trying.
You seemed delighted when filefind identified "service.exe" rather than "services.exe". That was not a surprise to me since the key words we entered in the filefind directory were "service. exe." The file I found in C:\Windows\system 32 was entitled "service" (no exe) and was 8.03 KBytes. The info says that the file was created in June of 2001. The regular Windows search function also identified the "service exe" file in C:\Windows\system-----.

Me again, Went through the WSCM procedure but did not find the 023----- item on the hijack list. WSCM was still running under "disabled." Any thoughts? In the meantime I will keep trying.
You seemed delighted when filefind identified "service.exe" rather than "services.exe". That was not a surprise to me since the key words we entered in the filefind directory were "service. exe." The file I found in C:\Windows\system 32 was entitled "service" (no exe) and was 8.03 KBytes. The info says that the file was created in June of 2001. The regular Windows search function also identified the "service exe" file in C:\Windows\system-----.
service.exe (with no s on the end of the word service) is the baddie
services.exe (with an s on the end of the word service is the legit file)
services.exe (with the extra s) was probably the one created in Jun 2001 and is legit. I doubt the baddie service.exe (with no s on the end) has that creation date and is more like 8.03
My services.exe legit file is more like 105kb
Whereas the sample I have of the baddie service.exe (no s on the end) is exactly 8.03 kb

These malwares can confuse by using names mimicking valid file names.
The "no extension" on your service file could also be a trick using spacing in the actual file name as sort of explained here:

So, to the human eye, you see no extension but it's there...and Filefind found it. Service.exe (no s on the end of the word service) is the bad boy.
Did you Killbox it as instructed?
The HijackThis log no longer shows the service running so that's a good thing :)
I did not run the Killbox program for two reasons. First, I wasn't sure that doing so was still appropriate since I was unable to complete the WSCM step. Then, when I got your most recent message I went to the atribune site and was unable to find Killbox among their downloads.
Suggestions as to what to do now?
I am sure that you are right that the the service.exe file is the culprit but the creation date for the file entitled "service" on my computer is indeed 6/17/01. The date for my "services" file is 8/18/01. "Services" is 105 Kb. Perhaps the dates are jiggered by the malware too.

The file find search came up negative which I assume means that the service.exe file is gone. Does this mean that I am clear?

Good! You got it then. It does look clear :)
Find this folder and delete it:
C:\!Submit
That's the backup Killbox makes after deleting a file. Since I'm sure you got the right one, no need to keep a backup of the infected file (though rendered harmless in that !Submit folder)
You can also delete the Killbox tool and any other tools we used (like the SmitfraudFix folder, for example)
Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?
One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!

This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. Hi Calamity, Very sorry to trouble you again but something is still haywire. All aspects of my Norton Security program are disabled and I can't turn them on. When I click on "accounts" it indicates that I am not logged on but there is nothing I can do because the the login window is inactive. All attempts to make adjustments result in the message that I do not have enough priority to make changes. Couldn't even remove the program to install a new version with updated virus protection (the old protection expires next week). Before all of this happened My internet secuity was set to log me in as an administrator. Any thoughts? Unfortunately, I had already reset my system restore points when I discovered that I still had this problem
Except for minor problems with my e-mail everything else seems to be working fine
As for the service.exe file everything jibes. The program that Killbox removed was the service one that I had found earlier.
When this is over I will owe you a steak dinner. If you are ever in Tallahassee call me to collect.

When you "click on accounts" ...where? In Norton?
I'm not familiar with Norton Internet Security. Sounds like it's been disabled or tampered with.
It is the "accts" in Internet Security that's giving me problems. I'm quite sure that I am registered as an administrator in Windows (eg. I was able to turn the system restore option on and off)
I suspect that when the malware was active it disabled the internet security program. I'm hoping to find a way to undo the damage without reinstalling Windows but have tried everything I can think of so far.
I don't think this is your problem. If you get any ideas, I would love to have them but don't fret about it. I think I will contact Symantech

Ok, I think contacting Symantec is the best option.
I agree that if you can reset the system restore you ARE signed on as Admin in Windows, so it is a problem with Norton. And yes, malware can often target Antivirus programs, so that may well be what has happened. Symantec may be able to help :)
