Hi,
I was here back in August with some issues, and everything was fine until a few days ago. Something called 'MS 2009 Antispyware' popped up on my home PC, and since then, something is blocking my Anti-Virus software programs from running (or updating) and is blocking access to certain sites that would help me fix the problem. I couldn't even access the Spybot forum from my home PC.
I ran McAfee in the Safe Mode, and it removed some stuff, but the problems returned once I booted in the normal mode. Google searches pop up in different windows, and with a totally random site unrelated to my search.

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Step # 2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.
Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.
Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Step # 3 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:
Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

OK - I got the Java update installed and ran the ATF Cleaner.
However...Malwarebytes won't open. When I launch it, nothing happens. I've tried opening it from the desktop shortcut and from the program menu. By the way, Spybot won't open either, and Ad Aware won't connect to the Internet to update. I can get into spybot.com, but I still can't even access this forum from the infected PC (it says the page is not available). I'm not sure if any of this is related, but I thought I would mention it.

For this next part, if you are unable to download ComboFix from the infected computer, you'll need to download it using a clean computer and transfer it over via a USB/Flash Drive.
Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:
Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

Hi,
I re-ran ComboFix, however, I was unable to update Malwarebytes. The program opens, but when I click 'check for updates', it says 'Update failed. Make sure you are connected to the internet and your firewall is set to allow Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to access the internet.' I did the quick scan anyways, and saved the log for you.
I'm also able to get into this forum from the infected computer, so something must be working!

Your version of MalwareBytes' is way out of date. Your version is 1.24, the latest is 1.31.
Let's do this:
First download MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware from here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Then go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the old version of MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. Reboot your computer.
Once your computer loads up again, install the version of MBAM that you downloaded earlier. Once its installed, check for updates, then run a Quick Scan.
Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)
First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.

On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Step # 1 Download and Run OTMoveIt3
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTMoveIt3.exe).
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

To remove ComboFix, do the following:
Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK
Please open OTMoveIt3.
Click on the CleanUp! button. If your Firewall gives a warning about OTMoveIt wanting to download a file, allow it.
Answer Yes to the prompt.
The program will ask for a reboot. Answer Yes.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Make sure the C:\ drive is selected and click OK. If your computer's Hard Drive is not located on C:, change it to the correct drive letter then click OK.
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..
Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional.
