View Full Version : Need help removing cmdservice
Dethwing
2006-05-05, 00:14
I've run Spybot 1.4 and Ad-Aware many times and have no problems getting rid of all spyware except for cmdservice. Also, after removing everything but cmdservice, after leaving the computer on for a while, I still get popups and more spyware/adware installed. I've read other topics in the forums which state that the cmdservice entries are harmless, so either there is something I'm not finding or cmdservice is active and still infecting my computer.
Here is my hijackthis log:

Hi Mike,
Oh boy - that's quite a mess. You've got a lot bigger problems than spyware, you've got a number of remote access trojans running and some of the nastiest hard to remove junk. Please be aware that you need to take any and all precautions to protect any accounts, passwords, any sensitive data on that PC, as one of (the many) trojans is Torpig which is a remote access trojan, allowing an intruder to access the computer and often contains a keylogger and/or password stealer.
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451
What is a backdoor or remote access trojan?
Read this article.
Danger: Remote Access Trojans
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/alerts/info/virusrat.mspx
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Considering the amount and the type of malware running, you should probably consider backing up any important data to removable media and reformat/reinstall Windows as your computer has been seriously compromised. You need to take this off the net and keep it off until you can get it cleaned up. Access these instructions and tools from a clean computer to take to the infected one.
I'm not at all confident we can undo all the damage and much of it may not be known. If a clean reinstall is not an option ...we can try to help with cleaning instead, but I can't give you any guarantees this PC will be trustworthy after this many bad infections. You can start with these tools first, but there will be much more to do even after these are run.
Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7
* Close all windows before continuing.
* Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
* You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
* When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
* You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
* When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Your computer will then shutdown.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.
If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

..............................
Next, please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido AntiMalware:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
[1]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
[2]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close the program after updating (don't scan with it yet, we'll do that in SAFE MODE)
Copy the following instructions to have handy as you will need to be offline, in SAFE MODE and with IE closed so you will not be able to view this page during the process.
Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam
Next, run a scan with Ewido.
[3]Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Complete System Scan button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient
[4]If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
[5]When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Copy and paste the results from that scan back here please for review :)
*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button :)

Ouch, I didn't realize it was so bad. I do appreciate all the help though. I would like to try and see if we can succesfully remove all of this stuff, however, if it gets too messy then I am ok with a format/reinstall.
I will try and run the ewido scan today, however I may not be able to get back to the computer until Sunday (just a heads up so you don't think I'm leaving this thread hanging).
Here are the new Hijackthis and L2M scan logs.

Yep, it's that bad and then some.
Ok L2m fix went well. Be sure to scan with Ewido in SAFE MODE and I would reboot and run it again to make sure it has a chance to "get" everything. That should get most of the trojans.
I think you'll also need this:
Create a new folder called BFU on the C: drive ( C:\BFU)
Extract the files from the zip archive into that folder.
Right click on this link and choose save target as. Save qooFix.bat to the
C:\bfu folder
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/qooFix.bat
Double click on qooFix.bat to run it. Close all browsers and explorer folders.
[1]Download Brute Force Uninstaller
http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zipBrute Force Uninstaller
Save it to your C:\
[2]Create a new folder called BFU on the C: drive ( C:\BFU)
Extract the files from the zip archive into that folder
So BFU should be on your root. In most cases this is C:\
[3]Rightclick on this link and choose "save as" or "save target as"
Save qooFix.bat to the C:\bfu folder
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/qooFix.bat
[4]Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
[5]Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
[6]Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
[7]After the PC has restarted please scan with HijackThis and post a fresh hijackthis log.
And then there will be even more to do - but's lets see what's left after those steps.
I would advise that machine stay offline until it's cleaned up.

Ok, all those things seems to get fixed without a problem.
When I went to delete all those folders and files you listed for me, they weren't anywhere to be found however.
Some of them I recognized and remember deleting myself a while ago.
Here is a fresh hijackthis log:

Good job! I missed a couple however.
Go to the ADD/REMOVE Programs in the Control Panel and remove the applications named as the following (if found).:
BuddyLinks
PSDT Messaging Integration
PSD Tools ChannelUp v1.0 (remove only)
CLOCKSYNC
If not found, they may have already been removed by prior cleaning steps.
Subsequently, do a *scan only* with Hijackthis and when it finishes, place a checkmark next to the following items and press the *fix checked* button
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: C:\Program Files\Common Files\PSD Tools\blengine.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRAM FILES\CLOCKSYNC\Sync.exe
Check to see if you have these folders left and if so, delete them
C:\PROGRAM FILES\[B]CLOCKSYNC
C:\Program Files\Common Files\PSD Tools
Reboot your PC. Please scan and post a fresh HijackThis log. I think this should do it :)

Alright, I got rid of the other entries.
Again, none of those files or folders were existant anymore, but that's probably a good thing :)
I did another scan with spybot in safe mode and cmdservice won't seem to go away. Is that anything to worry about?
Here is (hopefully) the final hijackthis log:

The computer has been online about 10 minutes now and no popups yet. Crossing my fingers :)
Thanks so much for all of your help. If you see anything else that needs to be done, just let me know and I'll get right on it.

Please download delcmdservice (by Marckie), and save it to your Desktop.
http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/delcmdservice.zip
* Unzip the content to your Desktop (a folder named delcmdservice)
* Double-click on the delcmdservice folder
* Double-click on delreg.bat to launch the tool
* When the tool has finished, please reboot your computer.
Scan again with Spybot and let me know if that has resolved the problem?

That worked beautifully.
Ran the batch file, then Spybot ran at startup after I rebooted, and I'm completely clean.
Thanks so much again, Jane. I really appreciate your help.

My apologies, that was your initial complaint but the other items were so much more critical, I was concentrating on them.
Glad to hear that cleared it. :bigthumb:
Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?
One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
(winXP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/
And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx
I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.
MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
As the problem appears to be resolved this topic will be archived.
If you need it re-opened please send me a pm and provide a link to the thread.
Cheers.
