Spybot S&D found Virtumonde

[sbcgirl]

I have used Spybot on a regular basis for about a year. Lately, I had noticed that it was telling me that there were no newer updates, for way too long for that to be believable. So I removed the version I was using and reinstalled. Upon running it the first time, SSD told me I had the Virtumonde virus :spider: I quarantined it, but am not convinced that remnants don't remain. All of a sudden, my Yahoo email reverts spontaneously to something that looks like a Dell page, with google, that says that "Sorry, we couldn't find http://ad.yieldmanager.com/st%3Fad_type." What in the world does this mean?

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

I should tell you that upon trying to download the MBAM program both times, the page immediately changed to the Dell page that the computer goes to spontaneously when I am trying to read my Yahoo email. ok thanks for the info. logs dont look bad at all. we will use hjt, but first disable spybots tea timer so it wont interfere with the fix. how:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

I guess I have to re-enable Tea Timer...by the way, I had it turned off all the time I was waiting for an initial response. Also, it looks like Antivir spontaneously turned itself off.....is that anything to worry about? I turned it back on...but I am concerned that I had not turned it off in the first place.

ok good. yes you can re-enable tea timer. Keep MBAM and always check for updates before doing any scans on your machine. As for Antivir, dosnt look to be malware related as the logs look good. I would just monitor it and make sure it dosnt happen on a continued basis. If it does post back.

if all is good: check your java version:

Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.

Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version

1) Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities. Always install Service Packs.

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.

3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts can help prevent malware from installing.

8) Install a third party software firewall.

9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client. Internet Explorer and OutLook Express are popular targets for malicious code because they are widely used.

10) If your habits include: warez,cracks etc or installing files via p2p networks then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
