View Full Version : Cannot run S&D, malware proxy in control
The symptoms: when running a search in google, the links open in a new window spawned by go.google.com; when searching with ask.com, a new window with a long random address also hijacks the search. This happens in BOTH IE and Opera.
I cannot run Spybot S&D, MBAM, SDFix, or SuperAntiSpyware - the programs launch, but do not show a user interface. SUPERAntiSpyware crashes on startup.
I cannot connect to Spybot's update service - I get the same error as in this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=41734). I tried to use the hosts file to route safer-networking.org to the known IP address, but that did not work.
I have tried running the malware removal tools in normal mode as admin, and in safe mode - same symptoms.
Help!

Hi tephyr
Download gmer.zip (http://gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save to your desktop.
alternate download site 1 (http://hype.free.googlepages.com/gmer.zip)
alternate download site 2 (http://www.castlecops.com/downloads-file-546.html)
Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html) for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial106.html).
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
*System Protection and Tracing
*Processes
*Save created processes to the log
*Drivers
*Save loaded drivers to the log
You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..
Shaba, thanks for your help.
Note: I had to rename gmer to test.exe to get it to run, and I did so in Safe Mode (the actual scan was run in Normal mode). Also, I removed my entry in hosts that referred to the correct IP address for spybot.info; that seemed to cause the Safe Mode w/Networking option to hang.

[B]Notes: After the reboot performed by ComboFix finished, SuperAntiSpyware came up (instead of crashing) and Spybot began warning me again about registry entries and browser helper objects being deleted (as expected). Yay!
I think we may have contracted this infection via a spam email. As you guide me through the cleaning process, can you make a recommendation for scanning/disinfecting tools for Outlook 2000?
Thank you so much, Shaba.
Tephyr
Recovery console thing is normal due to infection you had :)
"I think we may have contracted this infection via a spam email. As you guide me through the cleaning process, can you make a recommendation for scanning/disinfecting tools for Outlook 2000?"
We will come to that a bit later :)
See here how to install recovery console manually, re-run combofix afterwards and post back a fresh combofix log, please.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Notes: This time when I ran ComboFix, it downloaded the recovery console automatically. CF did notify me of a new version, but I chose not to download it.
SuperAntiSpyware automatically downloaded its updates, and I had Spybot S&D get updates for good measure (after running ComboFix), but did not run any scans.

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and tell me if any issues left?
No issues left that I can see from this infestation. No more proxy, all the currently-installed antispyware loads OK.
I have run all the commands from the Andrew user account, although the infection was contracted through the Jennifer user account. I ran IE and Outlook on that account, and it appears fine. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure her account is clean, too?
Lastly, there's an annoyance from the first spyware attack: for Jennifer's account, there is no "Run" Start menu option - I have to bring up taskmanager, and use the Run command in its menu. Do you know how to show that menu option?
Thanks,
Tephyr

Please post then hijackthis log from Jennifer's account next :)
"Lastly, there's an annoyance from the first spyware attack: for Jennifer's account, there is no "Run" Start menu option - I have to bring up taskmanager, and use the Run command in its menu. Do you know how to show that menu option?"
That can be corrected with registry fix; malware has changed policies. We will come to that a bit later.
Comparing this scan to the one from the Andrew account, I see one big problem: no antispyware programs are loaded.

Yes but there is antivirus running which is more important.
Have you installed antispywares to each user account?
I believe I installed the antispyware under Jennifer's account, but I cannot remember exactly. I assumed it would be active for both accounts, especially since both are admin.
If I remember correctly, there is a box which needs to be separately checked that it would be installed to all users.
Please attempt to install it next to Jennifer's account.
As for run command:
Right-click this (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/norun.reg) link in Jennifer's account and choose save as/save target as (depends on browser) and save it to desktop.
Doubleclick norun.reg, click Yes and OK.
Reboot and tell me if run works now?
I reinstalled Spybot to the Jennifer account, but never saw an option to install for all users. Ran Spybot's scan, got rid of a bunch of cookies and registry settings.
Neither the norun.reg nor using SuperAntiSpyware's Run repair tool restored the Run option menu.
So, what next?
Please download regsearch.zip (http://www.xs4all.nl/~fstaal01/downloads/regsearch.zip) and save it to your desktop.
Right click on regsearch.zip and select Extract All....
Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
Double click on regsearch.exe to run it.
Copy and paste NoRun under Enter search strings (case independent) and click OK... (boxed up in red in the screenshot below).
http://xs224.xs.to/xs224/08073/regsearch184.png
Click OK.
When done, RegSearch.txt will open. Please post the contents of this file in your next reply. This file can also be found on your desktop or wherever regsearch is extracted to.
Looks weird from copying from Windows to Linux...

Please try this (http://blbsnj.wordpress.com/2007/07/05/no-run-command-in-windows-xp/) next.
AHA! That worked, thank you.
Great :)
Still some issues left?
I don't see any other malware issues. Can you recommend some best practices so I don't have to do this again? :spider: Thanks.
Sure, see my final instructions from below :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
You can fix this with HijackThis, it is a leftover:
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)
Looking over your log, it seems you don''t have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall/download/)
4) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.
You can delete regsearch and norun.reg
Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
