Thanks SO much for answering! Just looking at all the incoming threads, I can tell how busy you must be. Here is the new log you requested. If you need me to download something to the infected machine, please let me know whether I should download the files to a different machine and save them to a disk, rather than connecting the infected machine to the Internet. Thanks again for all you do!

We will begin with ComboFix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\Tasks\jaunfcso.job
c:\windows\Tasks\qfsdeqlz.job

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select ''Run as administrator'' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

It seems to be working fine--started up quite a bit more quickly, too! Do I need to be concerned about those two "suspicious" files in my Outlook.pst? What about the two "infected" files in MUSICMATCH? Is there anything else I need to do to turn on the things I turned off, or delete anything that is not needed any more? Any ideas for protecting better so I don't have this trouble again? You have been SUCH a big help--THANKS!

"Do I need to be concerned about those two "suspicious" files in my Outlook.pst?"

No, I don't think so.

As for two files in musicmatch, they are not infected, they are risktools and that's why kaspersky flags them.

I will give soon final instruction unless any concerns :)

I never expected to get this kind of personal attention, especially over the holidays--and especially seeing all the others you've been helping at the same time. I don't know how you do it, but I really appreciate it! Once again, if you have any sugegstions for avoiding these problems in the future, please let me know.

Strange--I turned Windows automatic update back on. However, when I went to check for any available updates, I got the error message 0x880072EE2. When this whole mess started, the infection had disabled Wundows automatic updates. Is this something in a setting that I need to fix? Thanks.

Correction to the error code I just posted. The error code I received when I tried to update windows was 0x80072EE2. However, when I went back there just now to check the error code number, it DID let me download and install an update.

I updated Spybot and did a scan, and was disappointed to find it picked up 2 instances of Smitfraud-C.--the same one I had to begin with, plus another. I told Spybot to fix the problems, but I'm not sure that it did. What now?

Shaba

Spybot findings are most likely leftovers.

Please post back spybot report next.

How did you know that? You were EXACTLY correct--the Spybot scan came up completely clean this time! The only thing that's a little strange is that when I boot up, at the very beginning, a black screen comes up with too much writing to read in the fraction of a second that it's visible. The first line starts off with "Please" and it looks like there are two options below it, but then it immediately goes into the Windows startup screen. I remember that ComboFix got the Windows recovery console installed so it could boot up into the special mode--is it still trying to do that, or is this something else that I need to do something about? Thanks again.

Shaba
2009-01-02, 19:03
Yes that is due to recovery console.

I can recommend how to uninstall it but I highly recommend to leave as you can in most cases solve (booting etc.) problems via recovery console.

Then I will leave it, just as you suggested. One last question: We had disabled Spybot's Tea Timer--do I need to turn it back on again? (And if so, how?) THANKS!

Shaba
2009-01-03, 12:17
This will do it :)

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Check "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
