Hi I got the lovely 2009 pop ups/ mess to go with it. Managed to find 3 items from this via luck and searching a longggg time.Deleted them. I want to send a HJT Log for help but I cant open it. I down loaded new S&D without auto updates then did updates seperate. Thats all on desk top.I see the resident guy icon on bottom left of screen also.Right clicking and useing run to start S&D and Hijckthis doesnt work.Any HELP to get these to run, open, so I can send a log? Thanks.......I need an:angel:

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop (right click the link and select save)

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Thanks for helping. Spybot is uninstalled but down loaded teatimer.bat anyway.I disabled firewall,aol's computer checkup. Adware is not active only works for a scan not live watch, so took no action there. Have both the windows xp icon and the combofix icon on desktop. I dragged and dropped 3 times as nothing happens. I get the hour glass for a moment then it's gone, windows icon stays blue as if clicked on. I get the run screen for combofix, as I said I ran 3 times.I did not get a blue screen nothing happens.

Rename ComboFix.exe -> CombiFxx.exe and try running again. If it still doesn't work then download again and rename the file at downloading stage to the mentioned one.

Hi, Thanks again,. I thought I should post this first. I restarted the computer and I do see a microsoft recovery concole option under normal xp home edition start up. However I think this was already there? As I had to recover once yrs prior. I have a very full drive D also.
I was unable to change recovery date in computer however when I tried earlier this week.
So should I just dble click the combofix and try to run it again first, then rename if nothing happens? Rather then waiting for the blue installed screen?

You can try that but I doubt it will work before renamed :)

Wow yes, renamed and it rebooted itself 2 times but I got a log! YAY!
The "zoo" is my kids in case important as is the IM /internet explorer. I use AOL. Also only firewall I knew of and turned of was windows.HP Orginize tried to load on startup as scaning I clicked out of it . Last I have not updated to serv pack #3 as I had to uninstall prior it caused such a mess.Thats why we have the zoo as other users "kids" I could'nt get to open after. I tried to drag but you can prob see what I ended up with. They have been useing "administrator" /mine so they can hear limewire.Not sure if this matters?. Do they make keys that send electrical zaps to minors? lol Thanks again so much

As for the old monster here, having a problem with right click and while deleting limewire files I kept getting a pop up prompting to sign into Windows Live with ID?? Also I dble clicked the 2009 virus line in the kaspersky site results. Why? I don't know too curious? Nothing popped up but I did hear 2 pop up sounds...I do have some questions when we get past this though.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type "c:\documents and settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\CombiFxx.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.
Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:

Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!).
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

crap I uninstalled the combiFxx.exe no problems .BUT I still had
c:\documents and settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\CombiFixx.exe..exe typed it hit run like the prior but this time it did run and gave me a new log and created a new restore point.?? didnt uninstall

I'm not sure what that symantec thing is but looks like there isn't active antivirus program there. That said, you should be able to install Avast.

Changing online passwords could be recommended even if those weren't compromised.

I recommend that you take some backups of your important pictures, videos and music before that.

OK I got as far as "make your IE more secure" but I think I have problems from here and in security tab section ex:allow active content to run in my computer.etc. I made a list of what is checked so you can help me get these right but I don't think it's safe to post? Also AOL just blocked Bitfrost..backdoor for 2nd time.

No pop ups.Put in Avast last night. Now I have a problem as I can't open Yahoo mail to get their key to register. My computer is rejecting yahoo's cookies.There is a link about configuring a web shield proxy.Not sure what that is even.There is a link for it in Avast not sure if I should do this?

ATF Cleaner is good for cleaning temporary items occasionally. You may delete resetteatimer.bat but uninstall HijackThis thru add/remove programs.

You may delete logs too. Windows XP boot disk is recovery console installation file and can be deleted too.

What are these connected to? Taken from some log? System restore things will be flushed by system restore reset to which I gave instructions earlier.

One thing you should see in internet explorer settings. Go to tools and internet options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Change slider to mid level. Click ok and restart internet explorer.
See if site you had problems open ok. If it does then see the list in my 'all clean speech' and change ONLY settings I've listed there nothing else.
Do cookies give viruses too?
Some cookies are bad. I'm using mvps hosts file myself and don't have to worry about cookies too much :)

Well thanks to you my computer is now clean and safer.I'm still hanging online etc but I think it's machine related not maleware etc.After I get help from the techguy link and everthing is great, my children will be back on this computer. Soo not looking forward to this & resulting problems. I don't know how you can help us all here if you already deal with computers all day for a living.
