View Full Version : Help with Troj/Rustok-N
dying of frustration
2008-12-28, 07:20
Ok, my friend used my computer today and said that there was some virus or something called Troj/Rustok-N that was blocking him from viewing some websites. So, I ran a scan but nothing was picked up. I have no way of telling if it is a real threat or not, but I figured it's better safe than sorry. So, here I am. I appreciate any and all help you can give me.
thx.
Here is the HijackThis Log.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.
I see nothing of malware in the HJT log? Let's see what AVG 8 reports, are you having any malware symptoms at all?
*Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.
*Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.
* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.
* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"
* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.
* Close results and close the Interface.
* Copy and paste the contents of that file unless it is clean, then just let me know.
How about a look at your uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Actually, I have noticed some things. First of all, whenever I start a scan, my AVG program experiences an error and all of the components shut off. I end up having to start a scan three or four times before the scan will actually work. Also, when I sign on to msn, the homepage and search engine won't work. It says that This program cannot display the webpage. I have to go to google or yahoo if I wan't to search for something. Mozilla and Explorer both display the homepage though.
As for the AVG scan, nothing was picked up.
Now, for the HJT uninstall list.

Let's do this:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

This can be done as time permits, but it is important.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Let's have combofix take a look:
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

I have a slight problem. The icons that I am looking for aren't in my system tray. There's no Spybot or Ad-Aware icons, and I don't have AVG so I don't have to worry about that.
Any ideas?

As long as TeaTimer is turned off, go ahead and run combofix.
Thanks

I did the combofix program, but when it tried to install the recovery console, it said the the install failed, so it continued without it.
Anyway, i have noticed some improvements. First up, my homepage is back. Also, I am now able to download AVG, which i have down so.
Here is my Combofix log

First thing I want to know is if you are updating MBAM? Here is the database version you are showing:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.12
Database version: 722
Here is the database verison my copy of MBAM reports:
Date: 12/26/2008
Database version: 1551
Version 1.31
Your version is so out of date it is worthless and it is likely an up to date version would find this stuff.
Open MBAM and click on the Update tab, then click "Check for Updates" When you are up to date you should be on version 1603.
Now click on the Scanner tab, then Perform full scan, then SCAN.
Post the results of that scan even if it is clean.
Thanks

I don't know why it was such an old version. I updated it right before I scanned and gave that first log and it said that it was up to date. So, I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it.
Anyway, here's the log

I am really puzzled why you would post scan results showing: No action taken?
Are you trying to get me frustrated like you?
Please post a new MBAM scan results showing what was found removed and quarantined.

Now we need to get an antivirus program installed and running. If you do not want to try AVG 8 again I will post links to two other free ones, install only one. Once downloaded, installed, and updated, scan the system and post the results.

I hope you had AVG delete all of those junk cookies? This information will help you control those if you wish.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx
Let's see if we can get Recovery Console installed using this information: If it helps you, this is your version:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 and this is the download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=535D248D-5E10-49B5-B80C-0A0205368124&displaylang=en
you will be using the download for SP2 and I understand that is correct.
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Some info about that tool:

Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
Let's try to wrap up like this:
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, update it and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. Here is some good information for AVG:

The scan is all clean and everything is good. Just one question though. Is there any programs that I downloaded that would conflict with the programs I already have? For example I have atf-cleaner and ccleaner, which do the same function.

No
I have atf-cleaner and ccleaner, which do the same function.
ATF-Cleaner is probably the best small cleaner available free anywhere, you may do what you wish with it. I keep them both, use ATF-Cleaner often and CCleaner when I need a deep cleaning.
Read the links I posted for additional good advice.
Thanks

Ok great. One other question though. I keep noticing that Secunia PSI is removing programs. Like, for example a little window came up saying it removed something from malwarebytes and atf cleaner, which both had the term (patched) at the end of them. Is it supposed to do that?

Not sure what you are talking about, I have those program installed on all of my computers and that does not happen? If you have a problem with PSI (fairly simple program) uninstall it.

I don't know. I just get like a tiny little window on the bottom of my screen that tells me that Secunia has deleted "atf-cleaner.x(patched)" or something like that. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. Everything is still working fine so, no big.

Anyway, I think that's all. Everything is back to the way it was. Thank you so much for all your help.
