Hello,

I got hit with the Smitfraud and Virtumunde which downloaded a bunch of other crap to my computer. It immediately disabled my firewall and Nortons, Teatimer didn't do anything. I disconnected from the network as fast as possible but the damage was done. I searched for help cleaning this stuff out and I did somethings that maybe I shouldn't have. I disabled system restore, and used smitfraudfix. I also used some other cleaners to help clear stuff out. I also used a registry cleaner before this happened but I now realize these things are bad ideas unless you know exactly what you are doing.

The following scans show up clean: Spybot, Nortons, TrendMicroHousecall, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes Anti spyware, Vundofix scan. PC tools spyware doctor shows a backdoor agent lel and Pcast (I know what pcast is (program used for watching streaming tv for footy), but would like to remove it, already unistalled but registries remain?). My computer takes a long time to open things, what normally took about 3 secs now takes about 15s. It might be that I have 4 anti spyware/malware/virus programs running in the background but maybe it is still infected. Nortons is still showing disabled as well, and it won't enable.

Can someone help me please?

Thanks,

Daniel.

Here is my Hijackthis log and smitfraudfix log.

dont see much to be worried about in the combofix log. It did remove a few items, any better on your end now?

Spyware doctor shows infections. I don't know where to find the log, and I am using the free scanner so I can't remove them. All other scans show up clean (Symantec Antivirus, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, Trend Micro Housecall Online scanner). So I don't know if I should be worried about the Spyware Doctor scan. Nortons still won't turn on AutoProtect (I can click on it and it gets checked but after a few seconds gets unchecked). My computer still appears to be slow compared to before the infection.

These are the things Spyware Doctor detects:
Application.Nircmd (23 infections)
Backdoor.Agent.LEL (23 infections)
Adware.PODcastbarmini (63 infections)

Trojan.Generic (1 infection)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2341746048-2470504361-3285633183-1005\software\wget

hi,

ok thanks for all the info.

this;
Application.Nircmd (23 infections)
is a component of combofix. Some AV etc may flag it as unwanted or a threat. Its totally safe.

this:
Adware.PODcastbarmini (63 infections)

your spyware doctor is up to date?

if spybot, MBAM, SAS and housecall all come up clean, then I will say you are probably clean. Spyware doctor as nothing on them.

do you use both tea timer and SAS guard. You would see the icons by the clock if there where both running. Using 2 (or more) real time protection components can put a drag on system resources. Not sure if spyware doctor has a real time component or not.

Hello,

Again, thank you very much for your help. My SD is up to date. Yes I am using both SAS, teatimer, (Symantec maybe), and SD, which all run in the background. I will switch SD off and see what happens after usig the computer some. Any ideas on what is causing Symantec AntiVirus to refuse to switch auto-protect on (the icon has a ! on it in the startup tray near the clock)? Might I be better off removing it and getting another AntiVirus, as I have heard Symantec isn't too great?

Thanks,

Daniel.

hi Dongo,

Your antivirus you do want running in the background. Its the antispyware software that might have a real time protection component that might cause problems if more than one is running. spy bots tea timer runs in the background, SAS has there guard i think they call it that runs in the background, maybe not on the free version though. dont know if spyware doctor has one.

so by the clock you want to see your antivirus icon and one antispyware icon running all the time, if you chose to have one running.

causing Symantec AntiVirus to refuse to switch auto-protect on
malware can do this, but you look to be malware free. you could poke around there website in the troubleshooting/FAQ sections.

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

There are plenty of alternatives to Symantec AV if you want to get another.

this:
Viewpoint Manager is foistware, not malware. look here:
http://www.pchell.com/support/viewpoint.shtml

you can remove combofix like this:
start.run and type in:
combofix /u
click ok or enter
Note: the space after the x and before the /

keep malwarebytes and always check for updates before using it.

rescan and post one more hjt log.

Hello,

I got a bit busy and hadn't had the chance to do the above, but I will do it and post a new HJT log. I read through the link about viewpoint but am now confused. Why did you point it out? Do you suspect it was doing something?

Thanks,

Daniel.

hi,

thanks for the info.

Viewpoint Manager:
Its not malware and its safe to have on your computer. Its considered foistware, which means it was bundled in something else you installed to your computer has a add-on. There may have been no option to -not- install it. You dont have to remove it.

look here also:
http://www.viewpoint.com/installer/v4/html/vmp_faq.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foistware

this from the webpage:

Viewpoint software components have received a clean bill of health from companies such as Hijackthis

a HJT log makes no distinction what so ever about what is malware foistware, or whats good or bad in a log.

Hello,

What exactly did I do when I did the above? Why didn't I remove the third BHO (no name) no file?

I would aslo like to remove this as I don't have/use it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskMateAutoUpdate] C:\PROGRA~1\DESKMA~1\DeskMateAutoUpdate.exe

Also when I go to System configuration Utility, under startup I have a box that I can check called metacafe. I downloaded this but unistalled it, but there must be some stuff left. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks again for all your help.

hi,

What exactly did I do when I did the above?
your just removing the registry leftover entries.

Why didn't I remove the third BHO (no name) no file
i missed it, you can run hjt and select it if you want to.

any software you dont want to use and want to uninstall needs to be removed using the add/remove programs panel.

these 04,s like this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run:
can simply be leftover registry entries, which remain even after the program is removed via add/remove programs panel. they are harmless.

Software that is listed in the Msconfig utility remains, even after the software is uninstalled via add/remove programs panel. Its not anything to be concerned about. I think there are some utilities one can download to remove these items, other than doing a registry hack.

If you have removed this via the add/remove programs panel:
DeskMateAutoUpdate.exe

then you can select it in hjt also.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskMateAutoUpdate] C:\PROGRA~1\DESKMA~1\DeskMateAutoUpdate.exe

i have never used this utility so cant say much about it:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/MsConfig-Cleanup-Utility.shtml

hi,

speaking of this:
Deskmateautoupdate

look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall it. It is adware. Hjt dosnt uninstall software. reboot computer after the uninstall then use hjt and select this line if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeskMateAutoUpdate] C:\PROGRA~1\DESKMA~1\DeskMateAutoUpdate.exe

this: Viewpoint manager is foistware, not malware. Installed with something else as a add-on.
read this:
http://www.pchell.com/support/viewpoint.shtml

reboot and post a last hjt log. Yes I say you are malware free.

I appreciate your help however I am very confused. I already read the link regarding Viewpoint before, and it seems like it is harmless. Are you recommending it's removal? Do the bho files have something to do with this? I'm not sure why you pointed it out again, just kill it to save some processing power?

I can't unistall deskmateautoupdate.exe as I can't find an entry for it in add/remove programs.

deskmateautoupdate.exe as I can't find an entry for it in add/remove programs.
Most likely then its already been removed and the 04 you fixed with hjt was just a registry leftover.

To the best of your knowledge you would say I am clean then?
if you AV and anti-malware are coming up clean, then yes I would say you are clean.

you can remove combofix like this:
start>run and type in:
combofix /u
click ok or enter
Note: there is a space after the x and before the /

Two things you can do:
Java and System Restore:

Java:
Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

Restore Points:
One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

if all is good, some tips for you:

Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities. Always install Service Packs.

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.You may be installing more than you think.

3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/useraccount.mspx) can help prevent *malware from installing.*

8) Install a third party software firewall.

9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client. Internet Explorer and OutLook Express are popular targets for malicious code because they are widely used. 10) If your habits include: warez, cracks etc or you install files via p2p networks then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source? Do you really need another malware source?
