Hello everyone,
I'm new here and I think I am halfway ready to take a sledgehammer to my desktop if not just a reformat. I have an infection that I think might be worse than Vundo or Smitfraud. Maybe it's just a more insidious version of it. I have had Smitfraud-C before and managed to get rid of it but now this is a whole 'nother story. I'll attach the HJT log at the end of my post but I think some detail is in order. Here's the story:
I navigated to a site that had a popup I think...I didn't see any signs of something being forced onto my system. A few minutes after navigating away from that page, my firewall alerts me of a whole bunch of .tmp and .exe files trying to access the internet. One of them was prunnet.exe. Another was msiconf.exe. After I denied those files access via Sygate, I got a fake Windows Security icon in the taskbar. Of course I didn't click on it. The symptoms of what I associate with Smitfraud were there: Anytime I Googled just about anything, instead of taking me to the link I click on in the search results, it took me to a search site or would redirect me to the search results of another search engine like Yahoo. Anytime I would Google with the keywords "smitfraud", "vundo" or the name of any antivirus or malware software company, the site would not come up period. None of the update features on Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot, etc. were able to work.
I ran a scan with AVG and it found Vundo in addition to zlob. It didn't clean it as the problem still persists. I tried Megabyte's Anti-Malware and it found a different variation of it. It reported those deleted but my problem still persisted. I then tried going into safe mode and then trying Microsoft's Live scan as suggested by a friend. It found win32/WhenU.A, win32/comscore.gen and win32/OneStepSearch. MS Live said it was cleaned off too but I still have the virus when I go back to regular mode. After all that scanning and deleting, I go back to regular mode and find that my wallpaper is missing. Now my firewall is taking up 99% of the CPU when the desktop loads and statys that way. I get the yellow Windows update icon (or so it appears to be) for a few seconds before it goes away. My clock was also showing military time. It's showing the 12 hour clock now but not the AM/PM part of it. I read here that I should not turn off system restore but I did try that and of course it didn't work. It's back on now. The browswer behavior followed me into safe mode too.
I tried to run Spybot in safe mode and didn't find anything. Ad-Aware found something too...a win32 thing and after deleting it, I still have this problem. I tried Smitfraudfix. I tried VundoFix. I tried Symantec's tool for removing Vundo and/or zlob. To no avail.
Can this trojan actually hide itself from Spybot and any malware remover? I have no idea how to get rid of this. Like I said, I was successful getting rid of Smitfraud before but this is a whole other can of worms. What can I do to finally get this thing off my computer? I really would like to avoid having to reformat but it looks like I might have to.
Can someone please help me? I have a laptop but I really need my desktop back. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Here's the HJT log:

A few minutes after navigating away from that page, my firewall alerts me of a whole bunch of .tmp and .exe files trying to access the internet. One of them was prunnet.exe. Another was msiconf.exe. After I denied those files access via Sygate, I got a fake Windows Security icon in the taskbar. Of course I didn't click on it. The symptoms of what I associate with Smitfraud were there: Anytime I Googled just about anything, instead of taking me to the link I click on in the search results, it took me to a search site or would redirect me to the search results of another search engine like Yahoo. Anytime I would Google with the keywords "smitfraud", "vundo" or the name of any antivirus or malware software company, the site would not come up period. None of the update features on Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot, etc. were able to work.
I ran a scan with AVG and it found Vundo in addition to zlob. It didn't clean it as the problem still persists. I tried Megabyte's Anti-Malware and it found a different variation of it. It reported those deleted but my problem still persisted. I then tried going into safe mode and then trying Microsoft's Live scan as suggested by a friend. It found win32/WhenU.A, win32/comscore.gen and win32/OneStepSearch. MS Live said it was cleaned off too but I still have the virus when I go back to regular mode. After all that scanning and deleting, I go back to regular mode and find that my wallpaper is missing. Now my firewall is taking up 99% of the CPU when the desktop loads and statys that way. I get the yellow Windows update icon (or so it appears to be) for a few seconds before it goes away. My clock was also showing military time. It's showing the 12 hour clock now but not the AM/PM part of it. I read here that I should not turn off system restore but I did try that and of course it didn't work. It's back on now. The browswer behavior followed me into safe mode too.
I tried to run Spybot in safe mode and didn't find anything. Ad-Aware found something too...a win32 thing and after deleting it, I still have this problem. I tried Smitfraudfix. I tried VundoFix. I tried Symantec's tool for removing Vundo and/or zlob. To no avail.
Can this trojan actually hide itself from Spybot and any malware remover? I have no idea how to get rid of this. Like I said, I was successful getting rid of Smitfraud before but this is a whole other can of worms. What can I do to finally get this thing off my computer? I really would like to avoid having to reformat but it looks like I might have to.
Can someone please help me? I have a laptop but I really need my desktop back. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Here's the HJT log:
