Do this first...Important

Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Please do not proceed until the TeaTimer is disabled


Then post a new HJT log please

I can't seem to turn off tea-timer. SpyBot seems to run just fine. However, the program freezes whenever I click on the Resident Icon in the list of tools. I have tried this several times with the same result, even after rebooting my computer.

Is there some other way to turn of tea-timer?

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

I ran a scan only with hjt and fixed the items you listed. except the two RunOnce SpyBotDeleting lines which were not in the scan results.

then I downloaded, installed and updated the malwarebytes anti-malware software.

ran into another problem. the program freezes whenever I run a scan. usually it freezes about 15 seconds into the scan. the last time I ran it it made it 8 or 9 minutes into the scan, but then it froze.

can I turn off tea-timer by uninstalling spybot? or by restoring to a point before I got virtumonde?

Then try Malwarebytes again, if it still gives you problems, run it it Safemode, this scan is needed to clean most of the infection you have.

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Network Support
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.


As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.


Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I had some problems with atf-cleaner: it froze whenever I ran it with select all. Looks like the problem was too many files in my temp internet folders for atf to handle. I deleted those through internet explorer and was then able to run atf-cleaner with select all.

During after one of the reboots today, my system tray icons stopped working and when I reboot I get a number of pop-up boxes that say "to protect your computer windows has shut down this file". Or something very close to that.

I was able to run combofix without any problems (at least none that I noticed). Here is the combofix log:

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

I fixed those two lines with hjt, uninstalled the old versions of java, rebooted and installed the new java (then verified it).

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system


Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

I installed all the anti-spyware software you suggested. SpyBot still freezes when I click on resident in the list of tools. But I did not check the TeaTimes box when I installed it so that shouldn't be a problem.

If I could only get my soundcard to work again ... It stopped working months ago. But that is a problem for another day.

Go to My computer and right click on it and go to properties and click on the Device Manager tab, does it show your sound card as not working ?? You may need to download and updated driver for it.

thanks for those suggestions. I have a thread started in majorgeek. I have a feeling it won't be a simple fix. but at least my computer is running safely.

I have run scanned my computer a couple times with spybot. No sign of virtumonde again (knock on wood) so I guess it is safe to close/archive this thread.
