virtumonde question (not about removal)

I have been infected with virtumonde. I have started a thread in malware removal and hopefully I will get the help I need there.

My question is what exactly does virtumonde do? And is it safe to use my computer while I wait to get help and then clean it?

I guess that is two questions.

It could deliver pop ups, redirect your web browsing, install "scareware" on your computer, fetch more malware or install rootkits. Your best bet is to use the computer as little as possible and no personal info, financial etc. until cleaned up. in fact when not in use you should power it off or at least unplug the modem or disconnect at the router so you have no network connectivity to the computer in question.
