I used spybot to remove several (like 30) trojans and such from my compuer. I am unable to log on to my account on my computer. My wallpaper comes up but nothing else. I cannot even get to the taskbar at the bottom w/ the date on it to show up or the start menu. I also cannot get task manager to appear. The ONLY way I can use my computer is to start windows in safe mode with networking using the administrator account. Virtumonde is my main problem. I have ran spybot several times, even restarting my computer w/o internet connection and running it, and it still finds more trojans from virtumonde. How do I get rid of this?

I have attached a Hijackthis report which I ran after spybot.

Thanks,
Michelle

Hi and welcome

We'll attempt to help but I am concerned the infection may have corrupted more then we can reverse.

Print this topic or save to notepad, it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps as we will need to close all windows that are open later in the fix.

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

Next, launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad) copy and paste the text in the CODE box in it:(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

Save this as fix.reg and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop. It should look like this: http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb106/Juliet702/regMiekie.png
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "Yes" or "OK". You should receive a message that it was successful. You may delete the file afterwards

Now please try to reboot your computer to set the registry.

If you can boot back into normal mode great, if not go back into safe mode to continue.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. You will be prompted :"Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot into Normal Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C:(C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed.
Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

NEXT**

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Yes and press Enter Notes

1. If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
2. As many of the variants of Smitfraud have begun invading the Hosts file, this tool will reset your Hosts file as a necessary precaution. You will also have to reset any specific modifications you may require such as Hosts MVPS.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #5 - "Search and Clean DNS Hijack" by typing 5 and pressing "Enter" to delete the rogue settings.

Follow the prompts and reboot if asked to do so.

I followed the directions as closely as I possibly could. I could not start my computer normally so I did all of the steps in safe mode with networking or safe mode under the administrator account. I think I might just have to delete my regular account. Everytime I try to log onto it, the background comes up and my computer just freezes. I can't get the bottom bar with the start menu to come up or command prompt. I have to shut off my computer and restart it in safe mode so I can use it.
Thanks,
Michelle

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f387/Katana_1970/KB310994.gif

No Validation is required.

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'NO' to run the full ComboFix scan.

Next: Disconnect from the internet. If you are on Cable or DSL unplug your computer from the modem.
Next: Please disable all onboard security programs (all running with back ground protection) as it may hinder the scanner from working.
This includes Antivirus, Firewall, and any Spyware scanners that run in the background.

Click on this link Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Please open Notepad *Do Not Use Wordpad!* or use any other text editor than Notepad or the script will fail. (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the CODE box below:
Save this as "CFScript.txt" including quotes and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

File::
c:\windows\system32\ecxslelv.ini
c:\windows\system32\ymhwfvul.ini
c:\windows\system32\yGQpqtwa.ini
c:\windows\system32\apuvajhl.ini
c:\windows\system32\qoMGvWmM.dll
c:\windows\Tasks\teeycpxx.job

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,20,00,6e,77,76,31,5f,30,00,00

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

When I went to download the latest version of java I saved it to my desktop but when i went to run it a Windows Installer box came up that said "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." I am still running my computer in safe mode with networking under the administrator account. How do I change the settings so I can install java?
Thanks,
Michelle

Have you tried to boot your computer into normal mode today?

If there is still a problem, skip Java go to Kaspersky.

But I don't know if it will run.

Just thought I would give you an update. I am now able to log onto my account in normal mode! Thank you! I successfully downloaded java and I am currently awaiting the results of the kaspersky scan.

Good news always welcome.

Note:
Don't be alarmed what is noted in the Kaspersky scan, sometimes several items are located quarantined folders.

I am having a lot of trouble with the kaspersky scan. It completes the scan just fine but when I click on view scan reults it just shows a blank box. I waited a while but nothing showed up. I tried saving it anyway in case I just couldn't see it in the box but nothing saved. Any ideas? I'm running the scan for a third time hoping for results right now.
Thanks,
Michelle

Welcome back Michelle

Did Kaspersky say any items had been found?

If still no success we'll try this one.

Perform an online scan with Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/)

* Click on Scan Your PC Now
* A "pop up" window will appear, or a new tab will open.
* Click on Register
* Choose the option you like most, but we recommend the Free Registration.

Click on Register http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/tetonbob/PandaActiveScan_step3_register.jpg
# Enter your e-mail address, and create a password.
# Select "I do not want to receive any type of information". (unless you want to receive such information)
# Click on Send
# Confirm registration, and continue by entering your user name and password, then click on Enter
# Select Full Scan, then Click on Scan Now
# Wait for the components to be loaded and installed. Don't close this window or go to another page while it is downloading. You can continue using the Internet by opening another window in your browser.
# If it finds any malware it can disinfect, the Disinfect button will be enabled. Click on Disinfect
# Please ignore the offer to buy the program. Click on Export To
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/tetonbob/Panda2_export_button.jpg

* Export the log and save it to your desktop.
* Please attach the contents of that log in your next reply.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post which ever log you can with a new HJT log

How's the computer now?

Yes, kaspersky says I have 11 threats, 19 infected and 0 suspicious objects but it will not show a scan result.

Only thing I can think of would to be reboot the machine, empty temp files, then try to scan again with Kaspersky.

If not we'll have to follow through with the Panda scan.

I restarted my computer and emptied the temp files then tried the kaspersky scan again but it still wouldn't work. I posted the panda scan though, along with the HJT log. I turned off avast during the scan but I'm using it again now. Will it be sufficient to prevent another attack on my computer?
Thanks,
Michelle

Don't be alarmed by all you see in that scan....

Several items are tools used on the machine....
You can delete SmitfraudFix

How's the computer now?

Just a couple of things to tidy up/cleanup

Don't miss or skip this next step, this will remove bad files from quarantine and set a clean restore point.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

Example below
http://www.forospyware.com/images/adv/CF_Cleanup.png

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm
A side note about AIM Messenger, AOL user's and Viewpoint Manager. Viewpoint is one of the graphic engines that AOL uses and it is bundled with the application.
If you continue to use AIM Messenger, it would likely be reinstalled. Or if you recieve some of the AOL E-cards it may ask you to download and run this program to view and run the graphics in E-cards.
Your call
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the
following programs if present:

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\"
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

Now reboot your computer to set the registry.

You should be good to go, good job!

I ran spybot and it found some more viruses.. not virtumonde tho. Is that common? Could that be the reason I am not able to install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 on my computer?
Thanks,
Michelle

Michelle,
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)<--You mean SP3?
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16762)

Did Spybot give the virus a name?
If so what name and did it give a file path?

Did you run the Combofix uninstall command?

What platform?

I did uninstall Combofix.

Should I just leave these alone?
The service pack that windows keeps trying to download says it cannot be done. I don't know what the "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" is, but it automatically downloads them but is unable to install it. It's been trying to do so for quite some time.
Thanks,
Michelle
