Hi,

I've been plagued for a couple of weeks by recurring virii and other pests that just won't stay away! Avira AV, Spybot S&D, ad-aware, and MB Anti-Malware report Vundo, Virtumonde and other nasties. When I run the scans and clean the system, I'm generally trouble free for a day or two until I somehow get infected again. Everything is kept up to date so I'm guessing there is some lingering undetectable fragment left. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the response. I also wanted to edit my previous post to include some other information but found out I could not so I'll give it to you here: I suspect that my rundll32.exe is not working properly or is infected. It does not always show up in taskmanager, but when it does, I notice that error sounds happen out of the blue without any messages.

Your log looks fine but there may be more we can't see

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi,

You need to enable windows to Show all Files and Folders

Instructions for your Operating System HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html)

c:\windows\system32\ffkuz.dll <-- Delete this file, let me know if it would not delete

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Everything else looks fine, how is your system behaving now??

Everything seems to be going well so far! :D: I hope that everything is fine and I haven't noticed any unusual activity, but I don't want to start feeling cocky; only time will tell if these pests are gone. Thank you so much for your time and expertise.. this has been bugging me for way too long!

I guess it's fine to remove all the applications that I used? Also is there a way to disable the recovery console option from showing every time Windows boots? I know it's only on screen for a few seconds, but still...

Once again, THANK YOU!:bigthumb:

Your the first one that asked me about deleting the Recovery Console so I am really not sure but I can check and get back to you. If your Operating System gets corrupted in the future ( and they sometimes do ) by a host of reasons you will wish you had it installed. It will restore your system in lew of having to do a complete format and reinstall of windows.

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken

Thanks again, Ken! A couple of the vundo trojans came back, but I used MBAM and HijackThis to get rid of them again and I have been problem free for the last couple of hours. Also, the CastleCops site is down (looks to be permanently).

Cheers

Hi,

CastleCops <---This was one of the better forums and had a wealth of information for us guy removing this garbage, but the bad guys put them out of business. There site was constantly under attack and there old server could not take it anymore, we we're hoping that someone would come along and buy them , maybe someone will in the future. The people that write this garbage are not very nice, most of it comes from Russia from the RBN ( Russian Business Network ) that fronts as a legit company but there actually the Russian Mafia. Google them for more info.

Why don't you download and install Spybot Search and Destroy per my links , check for updates and run a scan, it will most likely find Vundo registry entries, when it does remove them.......REBOOT.... and run the scan again until it comes up clean, it may take a time or two to remove it all.

Then post a new HJT log and lets make sure its all gone

Interesting read about the RBN! Thought these kind of untraceable organizations only existed in movies.. anyway Spybot came up clean and here is the log.

Looks good :bigthumb:

It may need seem like it but there is big money in these dirtbags infecting your computer, especially when a rogue program is installed that will drive you nuts until you pay them , then guess what, it does not go away and you just gave your credit information to thieves.

My pleasure helping you, take care,

Ken:)
