Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

Help me out a little here and I will see if I can help you.

1) For your information, all of the 018 items in the log are the result of the Logitech Desktop Messenger which gets installed along with another Logitech program because the EULA agreement is not read. Unless you know what it is and use it, it is a resource waster and can be removed in Add Remove programs, but make sure you uninstall only what I highlite in red, this is optional:
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\ <<< uninstall only the program in red.

2) Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 <<< since HJT is out of date and you have not disabled TeaTimer, it appears you did not read the "Before you Post" directions. Please do so, then disable TeaTimer as instructed and post a new HJT log with the correct version that is plainly described in the directions, and I will take another look.

Thanks

rickett

No malware evident in the new HJT log? Can you tell me more about what is happening?

I see one service that looks like a Symantec leftover and no antivirus program running on this computer?

If you need links to a freeware programs, let me know. It is a waste of your time and mine to clean a computer without one.

Let's do this:

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/tutorials/2282-malwarebytes-anti-malware-mbam.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Additional Description: All searches using popular sites such as Google and MSN yield accurate web site descriptive text but the URL's actualy point to anti-virus site or shopping portals. I had read that if you log into google with an ID, the site will filter out these redirects. I tried this and found it to be true. A simple search like "L.L. Bean" yielded the company site when signed into google but URLs like clickndirect, bottomdollar and justclickdeals come up when using google without logging in. Similar search results also occur at MSN. I can post screen shots if it will help. "Delta Airlines" will yield bookingbuddy.com and cheaptickets.com as the top site and the actual delta airlines nver show on the where it would normaly be first.

This is new in the past 7 days.

Antivirus software: Yes, any recomendations would be great, free or pay. I had used Panda but found it crippling slow.

Malware found nothing, here is the log:

As you can see MBAM found nothing, so we have out work cut out for us, first let's get antivirus program on the computer.
Here are three good free programs, install ONLY ONE.

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

http://www.free-av.com/

Download, install, update and scan the system. Remove what it finds and post the scan results for me to view.

Thanks

I installed Avast and ran an autoboot scan that providedthe follwoing results:

01/10/2009 20:55
Scan of all local drives

Number of searched folders: 8239
Number of tested files: 89930
Number of infected files: 0

The system then informed me of the various Avast programs running via some balloon text.

I went to find the log file and quickly received a virus warning about a win32 system file.

It had found a rootkit virus called Win32;Agent;ADLA (Rtk).

The recomendation from the system was to "move it to the the chest" which I did.

All search results now return as they should with proper URLs

Thank you so much for your help!!

Sounds good, I would like to see a new HJT log before I start wrapping up. But first, let's get a scond opinion on that rootkit:
http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?uid=67d65122-0e48-4843-8a74-d4d0d36dca65

Let's check for a rootkit:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe <<< download to your Desktop
Double click the fsbl.exe and accept the agreement
Click NEXT...then Scan
BlackLight will Scan for hidden items
Scan took 23 minutes on my computer (clean)
If anything is found save the report and post it. Items found may be valid so do not remove anything.

Post that information, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Blacklight ran and found no hidden files or issues.

All searches appear normal. Re-booted with no issues or warnings and searches again appear normal.

I ran another HJT and the log is as follows:

Sound good, thanks for the feedback:bigthumb: you can use HJT to remove this dead item:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Disable this useless service:
Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Symantec Core LC and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

And I believe you could benefit from this information:

I just performed the two tasks you mentioned and I will read up on the links provided.

Thanks for all your help, being frustrated and feeling useless is not a comfortable feeling. At least I am no longer frustrated.

Thanks again for your quick responses and great advice.
