View Full Version : Help Removing Virtumonde
The following is my HJT log. Indications are that Virtumonde as well as with its endings .generic, .prx, and .sci are present.
Have tried to remove with Ad-Aware, McAfee, and Spybot-S&D without any success.
I would appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

hi,
your log is several days old. If you still need help with malware, simply reply to my post.
Thank you for picking this up. Yes, I still do need help. And, although I have shut if off now, TeaTimer was on when I generated the HJT list in the post.

hi,
ok we will get a download to use. There is a guide to read first. Read through the entire guide before proceeding. Install the recovery console, disable your antivirus and antimalware before starting combofix.
Also disable spy bots tea timer until we are done. How to disable tea timer:
* Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
* On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
* Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
* Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
* Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
* If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
* Exit Spybot S&D when done.
* (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]
the guide to read is here. It will explain all you need to know:

Hi
Thanks for taking your time to work with me on this. SpyBot TeaTimer is disabled. Combofix appeared to run without any problems. The following is the the Combofix log. I would appreciate your thoughts on where to go from here.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
*** Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.***
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
please post the MBAM log in reply. Also rescan with hjt and post a new log after you use MBAM
Hi
Thanks again for contributing your time to show me the way to clean this malware out of my system.
The following are the logs from MBAM and a post MBAM rescan with HJT.
Please note that McAfee Security Center 7.1 was on during both, whereas TeaTimer was off.
I would appreciate your thoughts as to where to go from here.

hi,
ok good. your welcome. You can remove combofix like this:
start>run and type in:
combofix /u
click ok or enter
Note: there is a space after the x and before the /
Keep malwarebytes and always check for updates before a scan. the paid version has real time protection and auto updating.
Two things: java and system restore:
java;
Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.
It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.
* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.
to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml?ff3
system restore:
One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
(winXP)
1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot.
if all is good. some info for you:
Reducing Your Risk To Malware:
The Short Version:
1) Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other Software (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities. Always install Service Packs.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.You may be installing more than you think.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/useraccount.mspx) can help prevent *malware from installing.*
8) Install a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client. Internet Explorer and OutLook Express are popular targets for malicious code because they are widely used. See also: Hardening or Securing Internet Explorer. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6AA4C1DA-6021-468E-A8CF-AF4AFE4C84B2&displaylang=en)
10) If your habits include: warez, cracks etc or you install files via p2p networks then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source? Do you really need another malware source?
A longer version in link below.
Happy Safe Surfing.
Greetings
Thanks for your continuing efforts to help me clean up my system.
Per your last I have:
(1) removed combofix w/o any problem
(2) Updated Sun Java and removed older versions
(3) Cleared and reset the System Restore points
To close things out I restarted TeaTime and to my surprise it encountered some issues.
So, I scanned with SpyBot S&D and it identified several virtumonde issues.
After having SpyBot clear these items, I performed a quick MBAM scan and it also identified virtumonde.
However, after having MBAM clear the items identified, I ran full scans with both SpyBot and MBAM and no problems were identified.
A McAfee Security Center scan identified no issues.
Looking ahead, I downloaded Secunia PSI and used it to clean up some vulnerabilities.
My system appears to be running smoothly now without any sign of virtumonde, but I can't explain the earlier scan results.
Am attaching an MBAM log and a HJT log which may help you determine whether all is well and we are finished.

hi,
Logs look ok. Cant explain why MBAM was clean one time and not the next. Maybe there was a update and it found more files. Virtumonde can add many files to a computer. I always recommend it be run twice if it finds and removes lots of files the first time. A hjt log isnt really reliable in all cases. Some malware may not even show up in a hjt log. If your anti-malware apps are coming up clean like yours are now, then thats good.
Greetings
Again thanks. It sounds to me like things should be okay from here out. This has been a major learning experience for me. Looking at the number of posts in this forum, there are a lot of people out there experiencing this and related problems. My hat is off to you and your colleagues for providing so much help to so many of us PC users.
