I have spywaregaurd 2009 that is obviously malware. I don't know how I got it and when I delete it, it reinstalls itself. I could not run Spybot intill I found these forums. So I renamed the spyware.exe to bla.exe. Now I can run Spybot. However I still cannot uninstall spywaregaurd. What can I do?

Hi jumpinjivinjoe

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

WOW! I did not know it was that bad. I now have the computer disconnected from the internet. What is the process of operating system reinstall/format? If I cannot do it I will have the guy who built my computer do it. What should I do to retain my various saved information, from software to MS documents to music files to internet links ect.? And how do I make sure that the files I retain via thumb drive and cd's, have no relation to this trojan? If I can do an OS reinstall how do I prevent them from hacking into my computer again?

Thank you truely,
Joe

Now the only thing that appears on my computer is my desktop background in normal mode and a black screen with "safe mode" in each corner in safe mode. Other than the curser there is nothing else (ie. program icons, start menu). How could this be?
However I can get Windows Task Manager up through ctrl+alt+del and there are processes running (.exe) and a varience in cpu usage.

I can give you links for that if you decide to do so.

You can move most important files to DVD/external HD etxc.

Easiest way to ensure that thumb drive is clean is to format it.

As for prevention tips, I will give them a bit later.

Infection can cause that you can boot to safe mode only. Are you able to choose normal mode from boot menu?

I would like to reformat/reinstall. I can choose normal mode or safe mode and both just come up with the background only. Perhaps I should give it longer to load. . .Ok I gave it 30 minutes and still nothing other than the background came up.

Here (http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/) is a good guide for reformatting.

If you want to save your data before that, let me know and I will give you more links.

I would like save some data. However I cannot access anything because there is no start menu or icons. Unless you have any ideas on how I can get past this, I'm going to take the computer to the guy who built it. And see if he can figure it out. I just can't access anything past start up.

You can't likely backup data within windows but that might be possible using live linux CD.

Let me know if you want me to give instructions for that.

Yet another question. There are three other computers on my network, are they at risk? Two of these computers are used for making money so it very important they do not have trouble! Does this trojan affect only my computer or the whole network? My mom's computer which is on the same network is acting slow and freezes up lately. A couple days ago spybot found virtumonde on her computer, I clicked fix and spybot has never found it again. This could be a coincidence. Thank you for your patience.:)

In theory it is possible yes because those are connected. That trojan is also a password stealer so I recommend that you post also HijackThis logs from those computers next.

Very good. How do I then prevent this from ever infecting my computer again.

I can give some tips soon unless you need instructions for reformatting?

Oh sorry. I cannot access anything on my computer. The only thing I can access is the windows task manager. I also do not have any operating system cd's or anything like that. So today I took it to a guy I know that builds computers. Hopefully he can get the computer to load the start menu, ect. And while he is at it he can probably reformat since he has all the windows cd's and I don't. I would have tried to reformat with your help if the computer would load up further, but my compter is literally disabled.
Thank you for the help and patience.

I got my computer back. He said I had 250 viruses. I asked him why Spybot did not see any of them and he says that he never uses any kind of antispyware programs like that, rather he says to always update the os.
However he did not reformat my computer. He did not think it was nessesary.

I am not going to plug it back into the internet intill you tell me how to avoid encountering this problems again.

"He said I had 250 viruses. I asked him why Spybot did not see any of them and he says that he never uses any kind of antispyware programs like that, rather he says to always update the os."

That sounds pretty "interesting" but we have our own ways to do things

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

I did the Kaspersky Online Scan as you directed. It did not find any malware. So I just had a blank report.
I must ask; what is the difference between Spybot SD and Kaspersky?
Thanks

Yes that is fine and log looks to be clean.

Still some issues?

jumpinjivinjoe
2009-01-23, 22:46
How do I prevent the Win32.Agent.pz and a Win32.TDSS.rtk. from coming up again? Also how do prevent all this from happening again?

Shaba
2009-01-24, 10:40
Prevention is the key. Watch what you download and which web sites you visit.
Some programs will help as well; will give you tips in final instructions.

Still something or are you ready for final instructions? :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

I recommend to update to AVG 8 as AVG 7 is no longer supported.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall/download/)
4) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

In order
1. Downloaded "PC tools" firewall (disabled windows firewall). :)
2. Combofix is nowhere to be found. I think it was on my thumbdrive that was plugged into my computer when I did the log. :)
3. Completed OTcleanit. :)
4. Disabled then enabled system restore. :)
5. Made my Internet Options more secure. :)
6. Installed Malware bytes. :)
7. Installed Spyware Blaster. :)
8. Replaced MVPS Hosts (I think :red:)
9. Downloaded Winpatrol. :)
10. I tryed to install AVG 8 but I couldn't because
"Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005"

Once again thank you for patience and help.

Did you try to install AVG 8 from admin account?

Yes.
Perhaps there is another antivirus I can use instead.

Yes or you can post in AVG support forum as well.

Anyway, here are some other free antiviruses:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

OK I have Avast, Winpatrol, Spywareblaster, MalwareBytes, ThreatFire, PC Tools Firewall Plus, Windows Defender, and Spybot SD. Do I have too many secuirity programs? Is there overlap and is that bad?

I recommend that you use only one of these:

- Winpatrol
- ThreatFire
- Windows Defender

My personal choice would be either Winpatrol or ThreatFire.

What is the difference between the two you recommend?

...and should I uninstall the other two programs?

ThreatFire is more aggressive than WinPatrol. Here (http://www.threatfire.com/features/) is some info about it and here (http://www.winpatrol.com/whyplus.html?index) about WinPatrol.

Yes, I recommend that you uninstall other two programs or at least disable them.
