Virus

This all started when I went to a website my friend told me to go to in order to watch movies. After that everytime I turn on my computer it takes forever. Then when I open Internet explorer, about 5 min later I start getting pop ups like crazy. Then a window opens and says I have a virus threat. Then the internet will colse down.

First, I want to know what do I do?? I cant afford to pay someone. Can I fix it myself?

Second, I am going to back up my document onto an external Hardrive. How to I avoid transfering the virus onto it?

Third, Please.... help>
